I think nobody thought this could happen. So everyone acted as a normal event. People took advantage of that. The United States already had another Copa América and nothing happened. One good news is that this happened now and not in World Cup where fans could be more problematic.
The final of the Copa América 2016 was held in New Jersey between Chile and Argentina. These two nations do not have large US diasporas like that of Colombia. Neither was it held in Florida, the capital of the Colombian and Argentine diapsoras.
A security plan for any US sport event is nowhere close to a Soccer security plan, in Europe they have like 3 rings of check points a round the stadium which means you hacve to walk like 20 mi before reaching the stadium. No US sport event has needs a security plan like that. Therefore, US has part of the responsability for not know that not familiar securty plan is needed for soccer events.
I've been to a world cup and i've been to copa america. The way they are run are completely different by conmebol and fifa. 2026 world cup we will be fine. Go USA !! and GO Colombia!!!
