- We’ve got the new BMW M3 Touring going head-to-head against on paper its closest competitor - the Audi RS4. Think this a forgone conclusion? Think again. This is a drag race with a difference.
So let’s see how the two compare. Starting with the BMW, it’s powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six that can produce 510hp and 650Nm of torque. It drives all four wheels, weighs in at 1,865kg, and the price starts from £85,000.
Then we have the Audi. It’s packing a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 under the bonnet, which produces 450hp and 600Nm of torque. But while the BMW has the Audi licked for power and torque, the RS4 is lighter, weighing in at 1,745kg. It's cheaper too - costing £70,000.

Audi guy through and through. Love estates, especially the fast ones. Did I know the RS4 was going to lose? Yes. Did I know it would lose comprehensively? Yes. Did I hope it wouldn't lose? Yes. RS for life, but that M3 Touring is so good looking. I pray they dont make an M5 Touring, otherwise my beloved RS6 will be in trouble.
M3 also won against the rs6
the newer car always wins. a new rs4 will be better than the m3 and a new m5 will be better than rs6 until a new rs6. remember the rs3 vs a45amg
@@Mika-jo5ix yeah it did. I meant that the M5 is a direct comparison to the RS6, the M3 is a little smaller. But performance wise, the RS models are in trouble. I haven’t seen the RS6 performance race yet
M5 Touring is coming as a hybrid may be next year.
From an aesthetic point of view the Audi RS6 will remain unrivalled. Attractive estate wagons are known as Avant.
Raising the stakes by adding crew members to off set the power difference was brilliant.
Having all those guys in the back, got me thinking we never see what the crew does behind the scenes. It would be cool to see a behind the scenes episode about all that has to happen for us to enjoy these videos. Including what it takes to get Yani there.
It was quite intense. The plot twist with adding passengers was great, well done.
Don't know why, but absolutely love how Yianni and Mat manages to launch at the exact same moment in their drag races.

well are some aspects to debate here : first obviously the differences in price is quite significant and not fair so one could argue that to match the price of BMW, Audi could get an performance up-graded kit (ECU + air filter + exhaust or whatever) to match the performance of BMW and then results will differ of course.. otherwise for me to choose the BMW would mean to change first that ugly front nostrils with a PRIOR bumper and latter maybe add the more aggressive competition pack..
The power is down. Can’t understand why Audi doesn’t give the RS4 at least 500bhp. Easily achieved with that engine. Or just map it to 510bhp then rerun the test.
@@martynstevenson5391 and take into account, that audi (and merc) are usually much more truthful about their power figures. If audi says 600, it's no more than 610. When BMW says 630, it can be 660, 670 in normal conditions easily. Creative power testing (supposedly under absolutely worst conditions that are faar from average) let's BMW (and Porsche to a degree) to be recognized as "BmW PoWaaAaH KiiiNNNg" while their cars are frequently just much more powerful than the competition that on paper is somewhat similar. I wouldn't be surprised if that audi was making 460 bhp while bmw closer to 550. That's a huge gap, no wonder BMW walks it after start. It should be racing with RS6.

Always been an Audi guy, love the all-round “practical” ethos, the slightly posh style, the super safe quattro in the winter, etc. And I hate the new full digital cluster on the BMW, but damn, I would still choose the M3 in a heartbeat!

Many soft-limiters can be bypassed either by shifting to neutral, and on manual cars, shift to first and continue holding the clutch and rev just like you do before dumping the clutch

Not many realise that the Audi RS7 is the beast of the German category with BMW M5 beating it by a huge length and that included the Amg c63

Also would be interesting to see if you spent an extra 10k on the RS4 bringing it up to a similar price point - how much impact would the Quattro competition sport exhaust and diff make? Does it shave off a second 0-60? Could also add ceramic breaks for stopping, and still be about the same price as the Beemer?
They did - in the UK an RS4C is the same price as an M3 - still 450hp. Same as it was in 2018 and probably always will be - it seems that's the level for an emissions compliant 2.9TFSI.

Matt, please bring the Audi RS Performance versions and pit them against their equivalent BMW M Competition versions please...

I am just curious about the outcome, not a fanboy of either one of the brands. Audi seems to have made quite some improvements on the higher end RS models with more torque, power, efficiency and weight loss... Especially rs7 and rs6 models.

I had driven the RS4 B8 awhile ago and had the M3 Touring for a weekend two weeks ago. I thought my memories of RS4 were a bit diluted, but this video cleared the doubts. The M3 Touring felt like from a complete different generation of power/tech/quality than the RS4 B8. Even the B9 feels miles behind on the tech/interior not to mention power output. M3 Touring is a phenomenal car, really really enjoyed it.
Not trying to disagree here but what do you expect from a 7 year gap between those generations?
Mate this B9 RS4 is meant to compare with F80 M3 and the B8 with E90..

Both very nice cars. The M3 is a magnificent piece of engineering. That model of RS4 does seem to have been around though for quite a number of years though to be fair so as you would expect things move on. Think it must be due a replacement model very soon

RS4 B9 arrived in 2018 M3 G80 in 2020 not much of a gap there. Previous gen F80 M3 arrived in 2014 in comparison

That was fascinating to see what effect weight would have. With that much torque the answer was not much. There seems to be a bigger difference than the power output would suggest between the cars.

As a prior G80 M3 CX owner in the US, I saw this coming. The M3 is underrated HP wise and the ZedF trans is just so efficient. Love it, great video and all in fun
They both run ZF8 boxes...it's really just BMW massively underating their HP as per usual...

And carwow put the bmw m2 in dyno and it was 1 hp less then stated so thats not allways true
@@alenalavanja6543 Its not massively underrated, in fact I think its more about how they rate the power. It's more of a worst case scenario. High heat, poor fuel and air conditions(not AC like in the car, external air humidity/elevation etc). It could make another 30hp but at worst its this number.

Didn't expect the M3 to win TBH, but seeing the specs upfront you can see why. I've had both the prior 2015 RS4, and the new model, and think the torque is amazing in comparison but the BMW still won! I would not sell my RS4 for anything other than an RS4, but man that BMW is epic! Respect to it
