Hello Caroline, thank you for your lovely comment! Yes, it's a lovely stitch for a hat. What I'd do is to knit a swatch, using this stitch and the same yarn+ needles you'll use for the project, so you know exactly what your gauge is and you can follow a pattern with the same gauge. Then, I'd make a 1x1 ribbing. After that, I'd use this stitch for the "body" of the hat, and when it's time to decrease for the crown, I'd change to Stockinette stitch (it's not easy to keep the design when decreasing). Hi, in that case you can work a setup row (K across), and then follow the pattern. This way, the even rows will form the wrong side.
