I loved this particular piece with Horne for such a long time that I can't take seriously anybody else in comparison - it was my first introduction to Orlando Furioso and I will always cherish this one.

Horne is the absolute Master in this aria! This was my introduction to Orlando Furioso so many years ago and will remain my favorite as well.

Listened to the prima lady Berokymilk referenced and cannot believe the audacity! To compare champagne, Marilyn Horne to Kool-aid, Prina! Seriously dude, check yourself! The woman is a complete mess with all of those aspirated runs! Faulty technique, unsupported sound!
It's amazing how Baroque music approach changes over the decades. This performance, as "bright" and "extraordinary" may sound to some old timers, definitely is lame and weak in comparison with fresh and very vigorous renditions as Sonia Prina's and Philippe Jaroussky's... I mean, the old lady almost runs out of breath, her diction is dreadful and the tempo is clumsy. Better to listen to a hen, at least that would be natural.
This interpretation may not be perfect, but is still impressive in the mezzo coloratura range. I was recently introduced to Sonia Prina's renditions, and sorry, she systmetically overplays the arias, presumably thinking it may compensate the obvious flaws in her vocal technique, clenched voice, no legato. I was told she sounded better in older recordings but her voice (Miss Prina's) got bad.
Its amazing when non singers like you try to be critical of one of the greatest singers in the world. Her lightening fast accurate coloratura would only be matched by Bartoli. Ms. Horne was called "the greatest singer in the world" by Opera News, all great singers of the present pay her homage ...and she is still active as a teacher. You are simply uninformed.
Remember, she's in her 50s here and still sounds great. Yes, she has some problems in some moments and her voice is not absolutely beautiful, but her technique, volume, amazing range and dark timbre is outstanding.
