You have to hear her to believe she really exists, or rather this voice..... I am speechless!! Best most beautiful mezzo, contralto and maybe voice ever!!!
non conoscevo questa registrazione....che non poteva che riaffermare l'assoluta ammirazione per questa Artista ascolta in dieci opere e almeno 7 ? concerti di canto dove la sua intelligenza unita ad una simpatia innata...la poneva al vertice anche in autori che eseguiva per dover di cartello ....per lei non c'era ruolo minore o maggiore...ogni Aria aveva da lei il meglio del suo Enorme Talento...frutto di uno studio ...quasi chimico...e algebrico delle cadenze...e qui anche con una dizione ...conquistata lungo il tempo ...sempre con maggior attenzione agli accenti ...che nostalgia...qui siamo all'Apice...certe agilità e invettive alleggerite ,le vengono dal fatto di esser stata un soprano per alcuni anni...possiamo dire che è un'esecuzione storica...ho speso una fortuna per seguirla in ogni dove...ma non sempre potevo raggiungerla...grazie a chi l'ha postata....
Sis agudos son de una soprano pero mantiene su tesitura de mezzo, pad lo mismo con sus notas graves sin llegar a ser contralto ella es insuperable, además es muy bella Gracias Dios por darnos este portento de cantante, con una interpretación única , bravissima

Nunca olvidare ese momento ya que el concierto fue de arias alemanas y quede decepcionado pero el vis que ella hizo fue todo un regalo : Casi un ahora de Rossini !!! con sus arias más difíciles. Al final tuve el honor de besarle la mano y platicar con ella ¡ Qué padre !

I consider Horne and Simionato to be the two greatest mezzos of the 20th century. Such staggering versatility, musicianship, stage presence, artistic passion, vocal splendor and color! Considering Marilyn Horne, one has to but hear 3 notes to recognize her voice. A sublime artist. All "the others" who came after, with their tiny voices, yodelling trills and vulgar mannerisms (yes I do mean Bartoli) don't begin to compare. I think the superb Elina Garanca is the only mezzo worth discussing today.
Do not forget that Bartoli early in her career was a marvelous Mozartian. She has a great voice but has gone in a musically different direction than Horne [who of course is one of the greatest voices of the 20th Century]. Bartoli is criticized for exploring an older style of singing that is well-documented in the critical literature of the 17th and 18th Century. Interestingly, early in her career Horne was criticized [along with Sutherland and Sills] for overdoing the style which she now is seen as perfectly representing pre-Wagner bel canto. Someday Bartoli may also be seen as a great proponent of an appropriate approach to certain composers, as Horne is now in regard in particular to Rossini.

Assoluto genio musicale e poi mezzi vocali eccezionali...solo la Callas per i soprani ha percorso la strada dello studio come sfida...dal vivo meglio che in disco...la Berganza/Simionato le sue maestre di stile....
Serafin Carmelo, la Horne cantava bene, era magnifica. Credo che lo stile qualche volta difettava, che non difettava nella Simionato e nella Berganza e ogni tanto un non so che' di volgare passava per le sue interpretazioni, un po' da saloon texano. Comunque non esiste chi la sostituisce.
Her intake breathing is exaggerated here because she being recorded with a microphone on her bust [look closely at the dress]. Thos breaths would not have been heard by the live audience. It is too bad that she was not recorded differently as this is a superb performance.
Very good observation. Of course she needs a microphone with such a small and collapsed voice ! Apart from the noise it creates we can see also that she does not know how to breath low and support the voice. Unbearable gargling on stage!
