I'm lucky enough to have a copy of this album and met Ms. Riley and she autographed it for me, she was very nice and within the 1990s she looked like she had not aged a day. The picture on the album was taken in the 60s!
As for Tom T. Hall writing the song he wrote almost all the songs on the album and most of the songs were about characters mentioned in this song characters in Harper Valley!

This was the #1 song on the planet forever. The year was 1968. Top of the charts for a long, long time. Jennie is still with us and still singing this song. She is still on you tube as a senior citizen. You might want to check her out. She is pretty awesome.

I love this song. The peopling judging when they shouldn't reminds me of a church I attended until I was about 19. The place was packed with people pointing fingers when they had all sorts of issues in their lives that needed addressing. I think this song is so popular because we've all wanted to unleash some truths about others when they are judging us.

This absolutely could have happened, I wouldn't doubt it at all. My mom was the only divorced parent of my 4th grade year and believe me, people do judge! We lived about 12 miles from my grandparents and Mom had an 8 track with this song on it. You learned real quick when the channels would change. Singing along, you would pause, hear the click and then keep on singing. Loved the video, it really brought back some fun memories from my child hood riding with my mom and listening to country music on 8 tracks.

One day the principal called my mom and told her, " if I don't coming to school, he's going to expell me. My mom told him, "he going into the Marine Corps a week after he graduates, you mess that up, I will personally come up there and kick your ass. There was a TV show on for awhile called Harper Valley PTA based on this song. That may be where you heard it before. Also, I have a story about this song. When I was young, we would go camping at a place that hosted country singers for concerts. I got to see a lot of artists there, and Jeannie was one of them. I walked up to the stage, she bent down to talk to me, and I asked her to sing this song. This would have been in the mid 70's. Her reply back to me was, "I'm sorry, darlin' but I don't perform that song any more." She thanked me for being there, then continued with her show.

Drinking for this song is perfect! At that time the dress the singer is wearing would be considered a mini dress, maybe a little shorter a mini dress. In Catholic school they send the girls home. Girls kneeled on the floor and skirts couldn’t shorter be than whatever the height limit was. Happened to my sister and my Mom went to school with her mini skirt and told the nuns she would not make her child wear a longer skirt than hers!

This was brought up to my dad at the parent teacher conference that I was not paying attention in class. Then he asked the teacher if I turned in all my work. She agreed that I did. Then he mentioned to her that I had straight As. And she nodded. Then he said, “Then what the hell is the problem!” LMAO! I love and miss my dad so much. BTW, I was daydreaming because I was bored. Girls in my elementary school were not allowed to wear pants until the 70's...and I live in California...not in the South. By the time I was about 8 or 9...we could wear pants. I don't think shorts were ever allowed though.
Most kids in those days also went to Sunday School...not Adult Church. Pews were for our parents during Church service...while we went to Sunday school. Very different times. Absolutely...this story happened often in the 60's and 70's.

There was a movie made based on this song in 1978. I remember seeing it. I think it was one of those network TV movies ( or played on TV later? )and of course featured the song. It starred Barbara Eden from I Dream of Genie. 😊

You should react to Artists of Then, Now, and Forever- 'Forever Country'. Multiple artists, many legends including Martina, Carrie, and Faith, that you've reacted to and like. It's a combination of 3 songs, 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' by John Denver, 'On the Road Again' by Willie Nelson, and 'I will always love you' by Dolly Parton.
