Gary Wilkes insists to 'get the best dog you can' since every dog needs a home and training. Some breeds (working breed especially) are NOT for most folks since nearly no one knows how to do even basic command teaching. Very useful video to hear the truth that most folks refuse to hear.
That happened to me. I have a shelter dog that I rescued at 11 weeks old. The shelter listed her as a Lab/Boxer mix. Turns out she is 65% American Staffordshire Terrier. She is a super sweetie though so I'm glad I have her! But they pulled a fast one... A year later, I wouldn't trade her for for the world!!!
These videos are so helpful and have been really great for me! I have a golden retriever lab cross who is 16 and has been the best dog ever. I trained her and kept it up and she was doing agility at 14 still. My brother is a .... jealous dude and he got a golden retriever lab dog I believe partly because I had one. He is NOT a dog person... he literally stopped touching her because he has "alergies"... him and his wife stuffed her in kennel and only let her out in their fenced back yard... She's also a brick house who pulls without care... He never socialized her and she has attacked my old lady dog drawing blood before (her teeth and bite are hard af) I was considering asking to take her for a couple years (because that isn't a good life for her) when he dumped her on me and moved away. I had NO IDEA how much work has to be put into a badly raised dog. She is lovely and just wants attention but she is needy beyond what I thought, she is OBSESSED with balls (like scary obsessed) She has zero human acknowledgment when outside, they trained her to pull them on a bike so walking is a nightmare. She just doesn't listen to commands because she never had to. He also 1 year into him dumping her with me finally admitted he bought her from a random person backyard situation and has zero idea what she is mixed with (I'm pretty sure she has some pit bull in her) ... Needless to say she wasn't abused per say but the amount of work I have to put in is 10 times what my old lady dog needed and 10 times more than the puppy I have. In a way I'm glad I'm having this experience before I actually rescued a dog because it can be very very disheartening... and I'm learning to measure my expectations.
Our first dog - a GSD, we adopted when she was still essentially a puppy at 14 months old. She had been bred, and by the time we got her, it was home number 5. After an incredible amount of work she was a great pet, very sweet, and very obedient, but the levels of anxiety and neediness never fully went away. While I really enjoyed watching the transformation... We are much in the position of your friend with kids and are getting a puppy to start this time so we know 100% what we are getting.
You have so much wisdom. I'm relieved that I found this vid today that made me realize the mistake I was going to make. Thank you for helping me be realistic in time.🌻🌻
Thank you very much for your honesty, caring and insight. When we got Gretel from the shelter 8 years ago, they said she was a lab/german shepherd puppy who was 5 months old. Took her to the vet she was two months old. She turned out to be a short haired Newfoundland/german shepherd.
Im so proud of my local spca bc I was looking at a dog , they called me back and said that they don’t think it would be the right fit for me (I live in an apartment). I was so happy bc I agreed that I want what’s right for the dog. So now my name is still on the list, and I can take my time to find the right dog for me (and I can end up providing best for the dog that I get).
We thought long and hard about this exact topic fairly recently. We were looking to get a puppy, and after our last GSD I had my heart set on a malinois. But...life has changed since we got our GSD as a puppy. While still committed to training and conditioning.... Being realistic I knew a dog with that level of drive would be unfair to the dog at this point in our lives. After much more reading, searching, watching... We decided on a show line labrador, who based on the breed traits is a perfect fit for our family. Really considering the dog and how it fits into your lives is extremely important for everyone (dog included).
You Robert, say what Needs to be said. You have addressed several tough subjects and explained the "how" and "why". I am on my 4th rescued GSD. They have been exceptional dogs. All have had their issues, but in the end, we worked through the issues and They all became awesome dogs but that took considerable effort. Luckily I work from home and was able to put the time in to training the dogs. I have personally suffered greatly for being the voice for my last rescue and knowing that she was a good dog, despite other opinions. Being of strong conviction I never backed down. 3yrs. Later and she is a wonderful dog, we have many happy years ahead of us! At 55, she is probably the last puppy that I will have so thats alright, we have bonded.
Just got myself an English bulldog. Having trouble with crate training, we had to resort to using a play pen instead but he still is getting bad separation anxiety. Defecating twice per night inside the pen, which we did make quite small to match his size. Besides that though he’s an absolute joy, very friendly and we have him already doing sit - come - down with your videos. No food aggression and thankfully he would rather sleep than bark at anything. ( unless he’s in that playpen of course!) Thanks for the great content, we and Winston appreciate it.
Hi Robert,I rescued Blue ,an 8 year old staffi, they never told me he had separation anxiety, now thankfully he came to me because he need a lot of time and patience for this . He also has food allergies etc etc. But I love him! Thank you so much for your honest advice.
I have always had working dogs but I am.getting older some of these dogs needed 4 plus hours each day. I do not think I can do this anymore. I have decided to go from working line to show line GSDs. I need a dog that can handle coyotes.I can still handle cattle and do need a certain level of dog
Thanks for a meaningful chat! The difficult subjects are more often avoided that dealt with. You aren't afraid to tackle these topics, uncomfortable as they are...
I love how this guy not only loves dog he respects what they are capable of doing. Most dog loves just make excuses for dogs with bad behavior. Hu e understands that positive re-enforcement had to be balanced for strong willed dogs.
Great stuff Robert, nice of you to put the reactive/excited dogs bit as well. I was reading your mail again today and that has helped me a lot along with your video in the members section. :)
Completely agree especially on the mixes part. "Lab mixes" are actually pitbull mixes all the time. As a pitbull mix owner, I know they're not cut out for most people and require work daily, which most people won't make time for. It grates me every time I see blatant lies in rescue and shelter listings.
Another exceptional podcast. Thank you for all the lessons in this video. Would you consider doing a video or podcast and sharing all the socialization and training things you did with Maya to help get her to be the dog she is today?
Such a good and needed topic. I took several years before I decided on getting a dog again and then thinking about what breed to get but still I didn’t know and understand it all. I love watching Goofy and your training videos.
Im pretty sure Rogan is too much of a libtard for Robert to sit there and have to look at in person. But that's just MY opinion. I could be 100% wrong.
@@aliasgersd you're lucky, believe me. It frees up so much more of your personal time and gives you more mental peace to not be involved with this country's politics. It's actually embarrassing. Glad you love dogs!😊🐶
So many people get the wrong dog. I am seeing loads of working line dogs being purchased as Pets. The owner can't be bothered to train it. Then we have charging off lead/leash dogs running all over the place, no job, unfulfilled. Well said about high drive dogs. My girl needs hours of exercise and training every day. I love it but she'd be far to much for most people. Great topic Robert, thank you : )
Such true words you spoke. i perfectly agree with you. Hopefully they'll be considered by at least a few dozen people who'll then might get a dog that's fits. And for which they can than care for and train it (mentally and physically ) the way the dog needs to be to treated (and loved). When I walk my dog or when I go to my local "Hundesportverein" (,i.e. club for sports for dogs) here in German I quite often wonder why a person got a dog to which they obviously cannot do right at all. Which is a real loss for both of them, but especially for the dog. Keep on with your great work. I really appreciate it.
One thing I noticed about my Chow is how I think that she makes an excellent guard dog and yet I would not take her out in public or on walk too much because people I don't know if it's the dogs who climb over under fences or what's happening but one day I looked up I was in the yard and there were these two black labs but they were fairly large and I just thought well I kind of frightened me a little bit you know because you just don't ever know what the dogs I don't I don't want her to get for example really quickly enough made a number of comments but I was out walking and the day before just walking and so the net the next day my mother and I just bought this beautiful stick a walking stick with a muscadine you know Vine wrapped around it was beautiful and then the varied the dog the very very before was wagging its tail and everything well it was a purebred like a pitbull mix and it was fine with me but as soon as my goal is to protect my mother who has a stick and it is you know thank God I work in the prison so I'm used to giving orders and commands and so I do it was everything I could do to keep that dog away from my mother you know and just stand there calmly my heart was beating really fast I had to call 911 to get to get help and my nephew were there anywhere I could go I said no and the dog was kind of on the hill and I mean it kept looking at my mom I told my mom to keep walking and it was I gave the dog commands and Sheet obeyed my commands which was good yet she was just focused on that stick and I know it was something probably was done to the poor dog with a stick and so thankfully 911 came up with the dog you know the the people you know the dogs animal control in in the big animal control I had to actually, because I knew if I got upset you know the Dogwood Woodridge get upset too and that was a really close call
getting a dog is like marrying and having children..It's like having a loyal companion throughout life..so choose the right breed for you..I have Belgian Malinois and he's very amazing and loveable..
The longer I own dogs and am around other dog owners the more I am convinced 90% of dog owners do not understand the signs that indicate a dogs mood/arousal state. This to me is key handling breeds prone to dominance or aggression. You can’t love a dog out of its bred in traits. Instead you must know the signs and correct before action. You tell it that “what you are about to do I do not accept”. Of course this only works if the dog respects you. It also means training to the point where a drop or sit command works in all sorts of stressful situations. Oh also a recall that works.
Someone left my Chow when she was seven weeks at a vet office in a box with her brother and I just put my kind of put my whole fist you know got to put my fist out to just on the let the end of my arm to see which one would come over and she totaled over him it's been eight years now and she's an excellent guard dog and I also think she has Australian cattle dog then I got 6 month retriever mix- six months which I don't understand about hunting dog at all he's not aggressive at all he's just a big barking dog ❤ the cats and the dogs do get along which I demanded course certain cats like dogs more than others which I'm sure you know😊
A family member of mine bought a munsterlander without knowing a thing or two about dogs. On top of that they have 6 kids under the age of 10. The pup is now 3 months and it’s a nightmare to watch them struggle. They don’t see that the breed is completely wrong for them and I feel so bad for the poor dog. I wish there was something I could do.
Hey, Robert you are not just a dog trainer who's always into sports,You are a GREAT PHYLOSOPHER TOO... I mean from the time I subscribed you channel have hardly heard you talking about the sports....All other trainers I've heard of & one that met personally is so called Worlds Greatest Dog Trainer, his dogs are too good out in the fields, when they are home they are chaotic, he Kennels them in his basement...He has 6 Malinois from military bloodline, he has done mondio ring, IGP3, but what's the use if you can't live withthem together in your house.....I'll not name the trainer, as this public platform......to me you are my idol, I'll will get a working dog, not now have to have retired life......I might get working GSD from DENNIS SOLDAN, Avi Cohen game his contact.....
hey robert my names douglas( from brazil , sorry for bad english) and im a huge fan of your work ! thanks to your videos im 200% sure i can provide a way better quality of life for me and my dog now ! shes a 8 weeks breedless puppy ! by the way do breedless dogs mean they have less intelligence/learn less training over all other breed ? so far my dog shows very calm and submissive behavings i wanna train her just the very enough basics for me and her have a pleasant life in and outside doors with other people and animals in general ! thanks for your guidance
We have a German Shepherd and that has been the biggest change for us. We've changed how we travel. Our Airbnb and VRBO filters are now always set at pet friendly when we can. There are some situations where we have to board the dog (staying with family, etc) but we do our best to keep them limited because the dog doesn't get the structure that they get with us. We got the dog as a family dog so we do our best to treat it as a true member of the family. Logistically it adds a lot of complexity, but we've enjoyed it.
😊 I really like your presentation it's like a personal conversation of a professional about what I need to do I don't plan to get any more dogs free probably a decade I'm just not going to do it I just got this puppies at the vet said retriever mix and anyway it's a grade what you said about that that we have a eight-year-old Chow Australian who is training the puppy and the only thing is I like to have her take breaks from the puppy cuz I think he's a little bit rambunctious you know being 6 months and what you said when I found out she was a chow years ago my hope the one left at the vet office I said oh great what have I done because I was worried I can't find anything good about Chows on the internet so I let a lot of kid getting her face I take her to the park and the kids play with her she does look like it daddy bear she was really cute and she's totally acclimated to children and she has approached and she's trained and she's doing a great job of training the puppy I have never turned in a dog ever not kept the dog all my whole entire life we kept dogs except when I was a child there was one that we gave back and you know he just it just didn't work but I think we gave him back to the people and that we got in from it you know so that was actually going he went back to the people so would like he just went through it a shelter and that was just one time in my whole life and then that was when I was a child he just he just was happier with someone else and that was back to the same people and I've also can't believe people give up dogs I mean to me once you have them that for life I mean why would you ever give him back
Thank you for telling the unpopular truth. I worked with dogs in obedience competition. Someone asked me to train their year old pit bull. He had never bitten, but within 5 minutes I saw that the dog ran this sweet family. They had put away table lamps, he nearly knocked the wife down when she opened the back door. I worked with the dog 2 times with the owners. After the second visit, I sat them down and told them they needed to put the dog down. This was NOT appreciated, and I knew I was no longer on their Christmas card list. I am sure you know the rest of my story. Their beautiful 15 year old daughter was bitten because she grabbed him by the collar to ask him to get off of something. So, they THEN took him and had him put down.. It was very disturbing. Awful expensive.
Do not get a Lab mix from a Facebook group which shipped from outside the country. The dog was fearful of kids and kept growling at my 7 yr old. We were lucky he got placed by a local group to a kidless family. They vetted him and he was not food aggresive and loved women. He also like men. In 2 weeks we loved him and he bonded but we could not risk an incident. He was sweat 110 lb dog. i think he was maybe not treated well by boys in his country.
As owner of 2 anxious, reactive Portugese rescues (street) dogs and one great, social, obedient shepherd from a breeder ... After seeing what comes out of Romania etc. I can't support those practices. You get anxious, unsocialized dogs, taken from the mother too early or even generations bewildered dogs, who knows ... Subdued for multiple days in transport to the west. 400 euro's a pup is a lot for those countries. While the shelters are overloaded. Those street dogs end up there as well. However good the intentions of the organisation, when it comes down to securing an income ... who knows what they ship. Atleast 2 cases with bad hips on top of the behavioral issues ...

Step 1 is to accept that you do NOT know how to train a dog and did NOT take all of even a basic class. Tell the truth and accept it. Learning martial arts, shooting a gun, playing music and many more skills cannot be BLUFFED through. A do that is not trained is immediately evident to a skilled viewer and they will avoid you if you are untrained!

He never socialized her and she has attacked my old lady dog drawing blood before (her teeth and bite are hard af)
I was considering asking to take her for a couple years (because that isn't a good life for her) when he dumped her on me and moved away.
I had NO IDEA how much work has to be put into a badly raised dog. She is lovely and just wants attention but she is needy beyond what I thought, she is OBSESSED with balls (like scary obsessed)
She has zero human acknowledgment when outside, they trained her to pull them on a bike so walking is a nightmare.
Awesome podcast! Thank you for your honest, direct and no nonsense approach.
( unless he’s in that playpen of course!)
Thanks for the great content, we and Winston appreciate it.
Robert, Very well said 🐶....You’re videos are getting better and better you are glorifying God🙏...
Thank you for telling them truth!!
Thank You for sharing your knowledge & commitment to dogz & the people who own them!!🥰🐾
Thanks for a meaningful chat!
Well said.
Tried so long to adopt a dog and wow it wasn't good. Finally got our TM and she is perfect for us.
Keep up the Good work Sir.
Love and Respect from India.
You should definitely do a podcast with Joe Rogan.. It would be amazing
Im pretty sure Rogan is too much of a libtard for Robert to sit there and have to look at in person. But that's just MY opinion. I could be 100% wrong.
To save you the time in looking it up, back in Feb of this year Rogan stated he was voting for Bernie Sanders.
Yeah well who knows. Though i dont know anything about USA politics
@@aliasgersd you're lucky, believe me. It frees up so much more of your personal time and gives you more mental peace to not be involved with this country's politics. It's actually embarrassing. Glad you love dogs!😊🐶
@Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Yeah But still i have my countries politics which is also worse. Hahaha...
This man speaks alot of sense🙏🏻
One thing I noticed about my Chow is how I think that she makes an excellent guard dog and yet I would not take her out in public or on walk too much because people I don't know if it's the dogs who climb over under fences or what's happening but one day I looked up I was in the yard and there were these two black labs but they were fairly large and I just thought well I kind of frightened me a little bit you know because you just don't ever know what the dogs I don't I don't want her to get for example really quickly enough made a number of comments but I was out walking and the day before just walking and so the net the next day my mother and I just bought this beautiful stick a walking stick with a muscadine you know Vine wrapped around it was beautiful and then the varied the dog the very very before was wagging its tail and everything well it was a purebred like a pitbull mix and it was fine with me but as soon as my goal is to protect my mother who has a stick and it is you know thank God I work in the prison so I'm used to giving orders and commands and so I do it was everything I could do to keep that dog away from my mother you know and just stand there calmly my heart was beating really fast I had to call 911 to get to get help and my nephew were there anywhere I could go I said no and the dog was kind of on the hill and I mean it kept looking at my mom I told my mom to keep walking and it was I gave the dog commands and Sheet obeyed my commands which was good yet she was just focused on that stick and I know it was something probably was done to the poor dog with a stick and so thankfully 911 came up with the dog you know the the people you know the dogs animal control in in the big animal control I had to actually, because I knew if I got upset you know the Dogwood Woodridge get upset too and that was a really close call
getting a dog is like marrying and having children..It's like having a loyal companion throughout life..so choose the right breed for you..I have Belgian Malinois and he's very amazing and loveable..
no it is not. Think over what you said... you are wrong and inaccurate in that analogy.
having a dog is like having a good and loyal companion in lifethat's what I Meant..
Very good video Robert. Really interesting and educative. Love from GUJARAT, INDIA .
I love my chow😊
The longer I own dogs and am around other dog owners the more I am convinced 90% of dog owners do not understand the signs that indicate a dogs mood/arousal state. This to me is key handling breeds prone to dominance or aggression. You can’t love a dog out of its bred in traits. Instead you must know the signs and correct before action. You tell it that “what you are about to do I do not accept”. Of course this only works if the dog respects you. It also means training to the point where a drop or sit command works in all sorts of stressful situations. Oh also a recall that works.
Someone left my Chow when she was seven weeks at a vet office in a box with her brother and I just put my kind of put my whole fist you know got to put my fist out to just on the let the end of my arm to see which one would come over and she totaled over him it's been eight years now and she's an excellent guard dog and I also think she has Australian cattle dog then I got 6 month retriever mix- six months
which I don't understand about hunting dog at all he's not aggressive at all he's just a big barking dog
❤ the cats and the dogs do get along which I demanded course certain cats like dogs more than others which I'm sure you know😊
A family member of mine bought a munsterlander without knowing a thing or two about dogs. On top of that they have 6 kids under the age of 10. The pup is now 3 months and it’s a nightmare to watch them struggle. They don’t see that the breed is completely wrong for them and I feel so bad for the poor dog. I wish there was something I could do.
May I ask in what way were they struggling? In finding time to train?
Is that specifically Maia's bed, or does she just like to come in and listen to all of Daddy's lectures?!😂🐾❤
Thanks for this great video
Im asking those who have dogs does having a dog mean NO TRAVELS?
We have a German Shepherd and that has been the biggest change for us. We've changed how we travel. Our Airbnb and VRBO filters are now always set at pet friendly when we can. There are some situations where we have to board the dog (staying with family, etc) but we do our best to keep them limited because the dog doesn't get the structure that they get with us. We got the dog as a family dog so we do our best to treat it as a true member of the family. Logistically it adds a lot of complexity, but we've enjoyed it.
No we travel all the time, we just have a pet sitterz
Gruzi been sick for awhile I had to give up my service dog Vlad 😢 Black Russian I’m heart broken went to lady that had is half brother hoping to get him back in little more than 6 weeks wish me luck. Tschüss.
Okay
Are any of your dogs rescues Robert Cabral?
yes!
One thing that kind of surprises me about the Caleb the hunting dog and he's pretty much you know he's one of the hog dogs you know this is short hair relatively large you know I'm used to her being kind of stubborn kind of amused to hurry antennas you know doing if they want to do it things are on whether the heart that strong will of the chow and this particular a hunting dog he has kind of a do what you want and he's strong but he's not strong-willed like my thow and I'm so used to that that I I kind of surprises me you know I'm just I don't really understand him very well because you know he's just so no-nonsense you know he's just like he'll do what you wanted to do I guess you'd be called a working dog and I really need to work with him you know like he just all about wanting to please where is my Chow it has more of a mind of her own and it's very different you know I'm a very strong-willed person the other thing is the two-year-old dog was gotten from a neighbor I think somebody just she didn't has she wasn't prepared for him and so I was supposed to keep him for a while what he says he's really a good dog that we haven't really connected and I need to figure out what we can do to connect I don't feel that close relationship with him that I do in my eight-year-old he's only about two and a half
not suited to person and\or lifestyle. My adult child is developing a free spirit lifestyle while shackilng me to her very large velcro dog. I am angry with her and annoyed with the relentless dog sitting and providing good for it as well .
