this is acting. no dialogue, screaming, effects, crying or mad darting looks. just pure acting. like Bette Davis in the little foxes when her husband is dying or another silent acting masterclass is Joan Crawford in sudden fear when she overhears the plot to kill her.
Nicole Kidman is truly one of the greatest actresses of the modern era. I just love her movie choices and how she takes on the more risky, challenging and complex roles.
This film (and its soundtrack) is criminally underrated. The only thing I took issue with was the filmmakers taking an obvious way out of what was shaping up to be a hypnotically stunning reincarnation film. But this scene, right here???? This is when I knew Nicole Kidman was going to take home at least one Oscar before her career was over. She acted her ass off!
Yahoo!!! finally met some people who actually like that movie. Most of my friends thought it was boring. By the way: my name is Stefan, 42 yrs old, living in Belgium. Cheers !
This film is a masterpiece. It's sad that America didn't see this amazing work. The acting, script, gorgeous cinematography, directing...all flawless. There's just nothing wrong with this film. People didn't give it the light of day because of the subject matter. They must've been busy watching "Dude, Where's My Car." Oh well, their loss. "Birth" was one of the best ten films from the past decade. Ask any open-minded and intelligent person, and they'll agree.
This is one of my top five favorite movie scenes of all times. It’s as intense, simple and effective as the scene from Waterloo Bridge when Vivien Leigh first sees R. Taylor. You can see every expression without one word uttered. Nicole was snubbed for a nomination because of that damn bathtub scene!
I will also say this. I've had the DVD since the day it came out and I cannot watch it because of this scene. It's frightening. I saw the movie at the cinema the day it was released in Australia and went back the next day because I didn't trust my eyes. It's a STUNNING film. Literally stunning
The music in this scene is the opening of the opera, Die Walkure (The Valkyrie, as in The Ride of the Valkyries, which comes later on in the opera). The hero of the opera, Siegmund, is running through a forest, pursued by a storm and by his enemies.
After I saw Birth I too was shattered to learn how unpopular it actually was. If there wasn't anything more going to this film than this one scene I think it'd already deserve an inclusion on every "best ever" list in the world, but it's not at all just this, the whole movie is absolutely fascinating. Will def. rent it again this winter.
i will be the first to admit, i hated the movie when it first came out, but this particular scene always captivated me, and was held in my memory bank.... now 11 years later, I just finished watching the movie for the second time. I'm older, more mature, understand how fragile life is and I find this Film to be a masterpiece. Incredible in everyway. I am absolutely fascinated to the point i cannot fall asleep because i'm thinking about it. He is Sean, without a doubt............ And Anna (nicole kidman) knows it.
Everyone says it wasn't Sean because of the letters. I don't agree with this view. It is very clearly Sean because he knew the details about his past life. The confusion comes in when his mistress makes her self known and says she was his true love and that is why he couldn't be Sean. Well its clear from the movie the former Sean really did love his wife and was also a man with flaws. This doesn't mean he didn't love his wife. He came back and remembers details only the real Sean could know because it was him. In his closing letter to her he says "See you in the next life." This means this is him in this life. The only reason he abandons his quest to win her back is because the boy learns Sean's flaws and doesn't want to hurt his wife with them. So he lets her just be and his wife knows it that's why there is that last moment at the ocean.
It was deliberately vague. That's the point. I honestly think she never got over her husband. The movie shows her descent into madness much like Anabella Sciorra in the MASTERPIECE "What dreams may come" watch the two movies back to back and see if you don't agree.
I agree it was Sean he knew where he died and he also collapsed the same way in the hallway. Notice how the mistress stops in the lobby of the building when she saw him. I think that at that precise moment she recognized him.
Therefore the scene worked on you, it made you think of something melancholic like your grandfather staring out of his nursing home window, face it Nic is spellbinding in this scene, it's pure cinema.
As someone has pointed out, the music is the beginning of "Die Walküre": A stormy night. A brother and sister, separated at birth, are about to meet, fall in love, and violate the law of marriage and the taboo of incest. And they are going to die. Kudos to Kidman, but the scene would not work without the music, and surely this piece was chosen for a reason.
Esta escena es impecable. Nicole Kidman está impresionante en esta parte. Realmente es un placer verla en cualquier película que haga. Saludos a Todos!
Does anyone know....usually these scenes are filmed without the soundtrack and music is added in later. Would make sense for this scene as well. If so, the acting is incredible.....beyond what I could imagine happening in silence.

I have to agree! She was spectacular in this! I love how in her eyes you can see her confusion, her frustration, and her eagerness to please Danny Huston's character, but you can tell her world is coming apart, after what the little boy said to her! Tremendous! What is that song playing in the background? The symphony?
i must admit i didn´t like the movie very much.although the idea behind it was great and so the music was,but i think the best thing about the film was nicoles performence.this scene and the very last one prove once again her great talent.
I saw the movie the week it came out. Twice. In two days. I had to go back the next day to make sure I saw what I thought I did. When I think of the rubbish that Nicolle did with Cruise, well it seems such a waste. She is beyond perfect
Well I can't prove why this movie was made and neither can you. It is what it is. If it speaks to some people, who are you to decide that they're wrong? There are no rules to any piece of art, I don't care what you say.
The actress had a rendez-vous with her partner at the opera... in this scene the music illustrates her state of mind... as you can probably tell, she's on the edge of a total mental breakdown... what is showing on the stage of the opera-house is of no importance... it's her mental state and the dark colour of the music that matters... Capice ? By the way : Grrreat Movie !!!
lol its just two minutes of a woman staring at a camera i dont get why people would waist two minutes of staring at a woman thats not even looking at you lol

@@glassjaw2007this and the final scene with Nicole on the beach - just devastating.

This movie blew me away. Total stunner. Truly one of the greats...so sad it was overlooked.
This is 'Vertigo' of the 21st century. People are gonna love this film 25 years from now.
A female „Vertigo“, with the Nervus vagus in action.
Just 11 more years my friend then maybe it'll happen. See ya then
I think it’s almost already there. People seem to appreciate this film much more now.
Nicole Kidman slowly realizing that a 10 year old boy may be her death husband. It's absolutely nuts and she's able to put that out. What a legend.
Dead not death
Nicole Kidman is iconic in all of her roles, it's frightening to have so much talent
one of the best movies I have ever seen
Unbelievable acting 🙌in a league of her own 🙌and obviously in her beauty 🙌

I love this scene, but without watching the movie in its entirety it wouldn't make much sense. In context, this moment of the movie is brilliant.
Extraordinary

The Vivien Leigh scene when she saw Taylor for the first time was so brilliant and heartbreaking, I can't force myself to watch it again. Masterpiece.
emotions.shown in her face she is fantastic actress
She looks so pretty with short hair
You noticed that too? And the dark color is amazing
This is so amazing...
What an actress...

The most memorable Close- up , comparable i only than Janet Leigh close-up in Psycho in road!
THE SONG IN THE SCENE IS OVERTURE OF THE OPERA DIE WALKURE OR THE VALKYRIE OF THE GREAT GERMAN COMPOSER RICHARD WAGNER

It's the prelude to the first act of the opera ,"Die Walkure", by Richard Wagner.

Wonderful! It's awesome
She is brilliant!!
Phenomenal. This scene should be required viewing for every aspiring actor.
And Wagner’s Prelude to Act One of Die Walkurye is perfect
_FANTASTIC
Utterly rivetting. I had to go back the next day to the cinema and watch it again
I absolutely agree with you! I saw it, when it first hit theaters here. I'm the only one I personally know of that truly appreciates this movie.
Everyone says it wasn't Sean because of the letters. I don't agree with this view. It is very clearly Sean because he knew the details about his past life. Thanks. I honestly was confused a little. No wonder why when she marries Joseph at the end, she seems depressed.
It was Sean all along. He loved her so much he had to let her go in the end

I have to wonder if they were inspired by Maria Falconetti in The Passion of Joan of Arc here.
This reminds me of "Black Swan."

Which is the music?,Wagner?
Didn't see the movie, have no context for the scene.
She's always nice to look at however.
tuxguys Did you ever see it? That scene has such impact
She looks truly rattled in the beginning, like she saw a ghost.
Music does the job! Take it away, and she will not survive 10 sec.......
She does a great job with her facial expressions.
Nah everything is in her eyes but of course the music is a great supporting actor

Evidently, Hollywood can produce interesting cinema.
Anyone know what musical composition is this?

she definitely has something with a 12 year old boy... but you'll have to see the movie to understand what's going on
She totally looks like Annette Bening in this scene..
io non l'ho ancora visto qst film ma è qll di lei che crede che un bambino di 10 anni sia il marito morto?

is it true that there is a scene in this movie where nicole kidman makes out with a 12 year old boy....?

Spend the two minutes you save learning to spell “waste”.
