      I love this also. Film is so very complex yet simple. If you have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression with co morbid mood; it' easy to be engaged with the character played by Kirsten Dunst. Lars Von Trier is a truly evocative Director who truly draws you in to the characters portrayed in his films.

      So true. I have both anxiety and depression. And my biggest fear is the end of the world. Not the fear that the world might end, but the fear of having to experience the end of the world. So this film speaks to me deeply, and in a beautiful way. I've watched the intro scene to this movie probably 30-40 times lol. Also I loveee Kirsten.

      The only genius here is Richard Wagner. Without him this movie would be nothing. But it's nothing new.....Wagner has been pillaged by Hollywood and especially its soundtrack composers ever since movies were invented, and it continues to this day.

    If anybody's curious what depression feels n looks like they should watch it. I feel like watching my own depression n anxiety in a mirror seriously. Perfect observation from Von Trier. Perfect. I'm so tired of society stigmatising depression n anxiety. F everyone who does that. I have it like some have a leg broken or a flu. Am neither proud of it nor ashamed of it. I suffer n that's a fact. Society should RIGHT AWAY stop stigmatising depressed ppl. The movie's just...B.E.U.T.I.F.U.L!!!!!!!

      Bullshit. This is how people who fetishize depression and have never suffered severe mental illness a day in their lives explain something they have no real concept is . The themes of depression are here but this is so far from the truth of what people sincerely go through it doesn't scratch the surface.

    When you alrealdy live on planet Melancholia.. you don't even bother about Earth destruction. I've had my depression months in the past and this was exactly the feeling. "You can wipe this out of existence, I don't beyond to this place anymore". The whole movie is slow, like the days when you're blue.. then determination comes when it's finally time to face what you've desired so much: end of the world. That's the second work I see from Lars and I think I'll love the rest. One of the most emotional directors

    The crashing planets at the beginning is not a spoiler. The point Lars was making was the contrast between how a seriously depressed person and a person with severe anxiety view impending disaster. In short, the former is calm as they expect the worst and welcome an end to it all whereas the latter is in a state of panic. Anxious people are afraid of dying. Morbidly depressed people are far more afraid of having to carry on living. I hope this makes things clearer.

    This is depression made movie; it's unbearable, astonishing, painful, raw, hopeless. I see Kirsten Dunst when she's so down and it seems to look at me in a mirror.. Lars has been - as always - a genius, and have chosen Wagner takes the sense of death at the highest levels. And yes, Earth is evil and it deserves to die.

    • @greywalker505
      @greywalker505 6 років тому +7

      No. Earth isn’t evil. Humanity isn’t evil. Everyone is as capable of doing something good or bad or better or worse as another person. For example, I, some average Jo/e, am perfectly capable of walking out one day and murdering some other person I see walking beside me. By the same token, I’m capable of doing seemingly meaningless deeds of altruism like opening a door for someone despite them being able to open it themselves, giving a few dollars to a homeless man so he can eat at least one meal, even something as petty as taking in a stray kitten. And those are just the little things that only I could do! Think of what so many others could do! It’s a toss-up, yes, since we never really know what a person is like until they do what they do. But think of the good things lost if humanity were to die.

    • @greywalker505
      @greywalker505 5 років тому

      @Jonathan Fiegl A fair point. But if I may respond, if organisms didn’t consume others, they wouldn’t be able to survive or feed their young. And besides, when predators (and by extension, humans) die, they help fertilize the ground, which in turn allows the prey to feed. (Sounds like a cut-and-paste of the whole “Circle of Life” explanation from The Lion King, I know, but you get the point.) So, maybe to some degree, life on Earth *is* evil. But it’s a necessary evil.

    I want to offer help to my depressed niece, to discourage her from suicide. But honestly, I can't think of a compelling argument. Saying "we love you", " things will get better" etc all feel like treacherous lies and superficial platitudes. The most honest thing I can say is, "it doesn't matter. It's already too late and suicide is the same as drinking a cup of coffee, another futile gesture that offers no relief or compensation for the inherent hellishness if existence" The truth is, life will not get better. You will grow old, feeble, demented, sick, and become an expensive burden to whatever family you may have, if you're lucky. You may very well just trip on the sidewalk and die, or get cancer, or develop some chronic medical condition that bankrupts you. No one wants to admit it because we would all collapse into catatonia or ferality, but life is nothing more than a macabre accident. Our struggles and triumphs are the same as an insect or an amoeba. There is no hope beyond stupefaction, delirium, or some affordable delusion. The world ends perpetually. People literally die in every second of every day without cessation. We would like to imagine that there is some discernable meaning or order in this infinite void and spectacularly violent chaos, but this is a child's dream, akin to the scene of building a fortress out of dead branches in an attempt to stop a planet from colliding with you. The nullification and invalidation is supreme. The only argument against suicide is that even that offers no reprieve, justice, or consolation. All actions are equally irrelevant and futile. I won't tell her this because it might just solidify her very intelligent nihilism about the prospects of fulfillment in life, but in my heart, I know that all of my encouragement is fraudulent

    Melancholia
    est un film montrant parfaitement l’anxiété, l’angoisse, les vaines ou dérisoires tentatives de rassurer la population durant la période juste avant l’anéantissement de notre planète ( donc notre monde ) par l’impact d’une énorme sphère venue de l’espace comment parler aux enfants de la fin du monde: suffit de savoir les distraire en se moquant avec un peu d’humour de la '' fin du monde '' et être capable, ce qui est la moindre des
    choses, de bien leur faire comprendre qu'il n'y à rien à craindre
    de la mort car la mort est absence de sensation - donc de bien

    The only reason this fluff nonsense of a movie is successful is because of its soundtrack. It ain't Lars Von Trier, it's Richard Wagner who is the genius, and his music for Tristan and Isolde is doing the majority of the emotional work here with its stunning, ambiguous chromaticism and orchestration. It is amazing how much soundtracks do most if not all of the emotional work in a fim for an audience, yet most people in that audience completely overlook it.

      Because they don’t have K.D. in them. Read video description.

    Mal alle runterkommen naxch em Video....Frage: seit wann steuert ein größerer Pante auf einen Kleinen letztlich zu? Die Sequenz ist physikalisch unlogisch, wenn auch sehr aufreibend , ;)

      Wenn sich Flugbahnen kreuzen (Exoplaneten, Gesteinsbrocken, Asteroiden whatever) und es zu einer Kollision kommt ist es relativ unerheblich, wer von den beiden größer od. kleiner ist ...der Radfahrer in dir dürfte bestimmt auch schon mehrere Male mit doof herumschwirrenden Mücken kollidiert sein und das hatte dann mit Gravitationskräften ziemlich wenig zu tun, oder? ,)

      ok ;) aber wenn Du den Film wirklich gesehen hast, weisst Du sich er das der Planet erst näher war, dann aber scheinbar weiterflog( kleiner wurde ) und dann plötzlich, wie oben im Video, hält er "melancholisch " an, um dann die Erde doch zu verschlucken...oder wie? :p Versteh ich nicht nicht ganz. Ebenso die Frage -wo the fuck ist der Mond? :D Grade hinter der Erde? Also ich finde den Film echt gut vom ganzen Stil und der Stimmung und vielen Bildern, aber rein handlungstechnisch stellen sich viele Logiklücken heraus..... Hast Du eigentlich schon den "Nymphomaniac " gesehn? den neuen Film von ihm?

      ging eigentlich davon aus, daß der vagabundierende Planet nach dem 1.Vorüber-Flug wieder hinter der Sonne verschwindet um dort Schwung zu holen (Slingshot-Manöver nennt sich das wohl) um dann auf dem Rückflug super-zufällig genau auf die Erde zu treffen. Ist alles etwas verworren und konfus aber das ist ja eigentlich nicht der Punkt, worauf man diesen Film festnageln sollte ...ist alles eher metaphorisch zu verstehen, wie ich meine.
      Nymphomaniac habe ich noch nicht gesehen aber ich werde das dann wohl nächstens machen.

      81506860 Du hast Recht das man das nicht so als wichtig nehmen sollte, aber die Erklärung das er hinter der Sopnne schwung holt is ja nun total schwachsinnig sorry^^ Da der Planet später ja permanent sichtbar ist( die Szene mit dem Draht-Rahmen den die Frau als "Größenmesser" an den Planeten ranhält), er sich entfernt um dann wieder auf die Erde zu zu steuern....Also wie soll er dazwischen nochmal hinter der Sonne verschwinden? Am Anfang wird gesagt das er sich hinter der Sonne angenähert hat, so das man durch die Blendung keine lange Vorwarnzeit hatte..... Naja...auch egal, viel Spaß bei Nymphomaniac ;)
