Hello Potters! This is a intermediate core lesson in throwing off the hump AKA Hump throwing. This is honestly a combo of about three different techniques most beginning potters will have learned by now.
- Centering
- Cutting a pot off of the wheel (without a bat)
- Coning up and down aka wheel wedging
This video was requested by a patron so we addresses it right away :) If you need a refresher on Coning up and down as it is probably the hardest of the three skills watch this video : • Coning clay up and dow...

Sir I learned pottery with your instructions and I owe u big time
I will be going live on UA-cam right after this video goes live.
Excellent video, as usual! Thank you :)
I suspect the reason for the S-cracks when using the needle tool is because you're actually compressing the clay when you're cutting into it. With the wire and string that forces spread out over a much longer surface area, so it doesn't compress the clay. Just a theory.
I needed this lesson!
Amazing , thank you! How do you trim those off the hump crazy bottoms?
I noticed that you don’t compress the bottom at all. Do you get s cracks? I made about 11 shot glasses this way and half of them got thru s cracks. I’m wondering why if it’s not the compression. Also thanks for your videos!!
I just watched Tim See throw a "teapot" off the hump on April Fool's Day a couple of years ago.
