    Semper Fi brother i see that you were in the Marine Corp. I'm a Sergeant First Class in the Virginia Army National Guard. I have Three tours to Iraq under my belt and currently going back to Iraq for the fourth time and i want to start Hotshot Trucking when i come back from Iraq. Seeing your rig makes me want to get a setup something like you have but i have two dogs and my wife i would like to drive around the country with. I have a big family of nieces and nephews that would probably love to ride with me to see the United States. Love your truck!!!!

    6.7 longbed here, with a 55 gallon fuel tank that saves TONS of space and time hauling
    A 40ft dry toy hauler, i10, i40, AZ to CA.
    I go hungry before the truck does, and highly recommend it. My flatbed has space underneath above the driveline for 4 golf cart batteries wired up to alternator (12v dashboard mini solar/cig outlet) with ONE WAY Charge, 80amp breaker to solar batteries.
    Im welding up a modular Insulated sleeper box and using the trucks AC/Heat through the open windows so I don't need a separate generator someone could steal.
    The back half of the truck is all 21' max inside bed height for spare trailer tires and parts.
    Rear airbags makes the difference in stability in these trucks. Death wobble happens under no load.
    LOVE THESE BEASTS!!!

    So I used to run hotshot and I loved every minute of it. I have also ran a lot of class 8 big rigs flat bed, side dump, and car hauler. This setup is sick and there was a day I'd give anything for a similar setup. If I were ever to get back into hot shot again I'd go over and get a single axle tractor out of Cali with a Detroit. They can match mpg of a loaded pick up with way more power under the hood. Full air ride axles cab and driver seat. Add all the cost of all the accessories and price of the new pickup truck and that price is pretty steep. Especially when you figure how soon you will need to replace the truck. Class 8 truck will go 1 million pulling 80k easy. Would go way longer pulling light hot shot loads. Just my 2 cents.

    • @gregpartain4307
      @gregpartain4307 2 роки тому

      Exactly, I agree with the single axle trucks, these smaller trucks west out way too quick. I had a brand new Ford and it didn’t last 3 years

    Been driving big rigs for 16 years and hotshot for almost 2 years in a stock 2018 3500 4x4. I've been trying to get my current company to switch from the 3500 to at least the 4500 with the air ride gooseneck also hydraulic dovetail. 3 months into driving hotshot I bought a ford f350 king ranch which ended up getting stolen 3 hours after I bought it. 3-18-2018 Been trying to recover from that ever since. I'm currently still deciding to go back to driving big rigs. I really like this setup. This would be perfect for me. I also do game/software development when I'm on my breaks. Behind me, I have a mini frig hooked up to a 750-watt power inverter and a mattress going from the back seat to the front passenger seat. Then can't forget my co-driver. My 9-year old brindle pitbull. Great video!

    • @DreamInspired
      @DreamInspired  5 років тому

      Big rigs are cool because of all the added space and comfortable. I’ve got a Volvo 780 right now and this thing is a castle compared to my 3500. The hotshot sleepers are on a different level tho. I’ve got a friend on Instagram who found a 2017 4500 with the sleeper with 95k miles on it for $30k. Another guy found a 2015 4500 with the sleeper and 185k miles for $20k. Both guys bought the trucks, put some cash into the engine and suspension, and now sleep extremely comfortably with low payments on their trucks. If you’re looking to go the RoadMaster sleeper route, that might be a good start for yourself.

    I know this video is 2 years old but I still want to get my opinion on this. As someone who has been driving trucks before I was 18 this is absolutely a sweet setup. Back in the '80s I went and got a class A license. That's why way before CDL licenses. The laws back then was so goofy that I was allowed to have a class A license but since I was not 18 I could not drive out of state. When I was older I would drive locally all week long and on Friday nights I would switch out my day cab for a sleeper. I have to say some of the best sleep in my life was in the sleeper on the truck I drove on Friday nights. Now that I'm retired I am going to seriously look in to getting something like this. I like to travel I just don't like having to check in someplace every night just to sleep. Anyone who has driven a sleeper cab tractor we'll all say about the same thing.
    Who were you saying and I'm not even sure if it would be an issue is the fact of sleeping with a generator running and not a truck. Whenever I would stop for the night it didn't matter winter or summer my truck would not be turned off unless I was inside the truck stop getting something to eat or taking a shower. So I'm not sure if it wasn't the vibrations from the big diesel in front that made it so comfortable to sleep at night.
    I most definitely hit the like button on this and I hit the subscribe button. Anybody who provided this great information deserve from loving. As soon as I hit the post button on this I'm telling over to the website to see what I have to do to get started to buy one of these. Again thanks for the great information and video

    The way the truck is setup all the 5th wheel weight is on the rear tires. Yes the motor weight is on front but you are not able to bring the hitch closer to the front to transfer some trailer weight to the front wheels possibly limiting your weight capacity. This might not be an issue for loads you carry

    Just buy a Freightliner with an APU and your set. Don’t want to rock a class 8 vehicle? Just take one rear axle off of the truck. Full size fridge/ microwave/bed/ closets/43” tv/ etc. and be able to stand up. Get a million more miles outta the truck.

Cross the scales the other day at Pilot 47,600 standing out of truck and low on fuel. Outlaw Trucking from Texas run all over the US and try to go around Tennessee always open. Just be ready for that day when you hit the portable scales (which can be set up almost anywhere) or when one of those white highway patrol cars sees you looking a little heavy and decides to break out the drive-ons. Ever thought about going with a Freightliner M2-112 (or the lighter duty M2-106) crew cab and installing a double bunk sleeper? That would give you a nice flat floor making it easier to go from the driver seat to the sleeper. And have enough room for the family. Could get one with the single rear drive axle. You can get them with four wheel drive though I believe that would be an upfitter option. You can opt for the Cummins if that is what you prefer. But I would back it with the Eaton Fuller 13-speed manual if they will still give that option.

    I just bought a single cab F450 with a blown engine and I'm working on setting it up to replace my F350 hot shot rig. Is your sleeper setup (with the rear truck seats installed) FMCSA compliant? Can you legally log sleeper berth with it? I didn't see any restraint system in place, but my concern is the 36"W X 18"H minimum opening for access into the cab. I'm planning on adding a semi sleeper to the back of the cab. I believe the only way I can achieve that is to run without a passenger seat. Or find one that folds down forward to give the required opening width. My truck is a 84' CA so with a gooseneck trailer I could put a 48" sleeper and still make 90+ degree swings. Of course if I can find a cheap enough semi with a sleeper, I will jump at that and abandon the F450...

    • @DreamInspired
      @DreamInspired  2 роки тому

      Yes and yes. It’s FMCSA compliant and legal to log sleeper berth. The restraint system I don’t know everything on so as far as being in it while a team member drives, that will be a question for Buster at Road Master. I sold my truck a while back and never team drove in it so that 1 isn’t my area to answer. As for an interior sleeper system in your front or back seat, there was 1 company that made a system that removed your door panels, but their system was deemed non compliant. 1 thing and this is most important part, there is nothing saying you can not sleep in your back seat or build your own bed. Restraints are not required as long as your truck is not being driven while someone is in the bed. It’s for a solo driver set up and only that. We all build bed systems in our back seats. I did on my 3500. It’s completely legal as they can not tell you where to sleep. It is completely illegal however to log “sleeper” without a compliant sleeper. Log off duty only. Best bet in my opinion, search Coffin Sleeper For Sale on Google and you’ll plenty of stuff you can modify and fit on your truck. That would be my way if I ever go back to hotshot.

    • @2020HotShotTruckingLLC
      @2020HotShotTruckingLLC 2 роки тому

      @@DreamInspired I'm working on building a regular cab F450 and plan on installing a semi sleeper. It has to meet ALL the requirements including the restraint system so you can legally log sleeper time. For now, I cannot be out on the road overnight since I take care of my 86 year old Mom but I expect that will be ending soon as it appears that she is losing the ability to eat. I'm just trying to figure out what I need for this project. I'm thinking the front passenger seat will be blocking part of the required 36"W X 18"H opening. I think that if the front seat was removed or if it will fold forward like you would have with a supercab truck then the required space would be there.

    • @DreamInspired
      @DreamInspired  2 роки тому

      @@2020HotShotTruckingLLC you only need restraints and everything if you are planning to sleep in it while the truck is in motion. If the truck is not in motion, if you are not team driving, the. You don’t need to make it a 100% legal sleeper. I have a 2016 Volvo 780 seen in episode 95 on my channel and when I am solo on the road, I log off duty time, not sleeper berth time. I have a team driver now and when he is driving and I’m sleeping, that’s the only time I log SB. You don’t need to log SB to be able to sleep over night especially when you are driving solo. If you want to make it 100% legal, that’s cool but its a lot of extra work if you’re driving solo.
      Yeah you can remove the pass seat if you want. It definitely makes it easier to get in and out of the sleeper, but I don’t know anyone who does it for legality… It’s more just convenience. Road master leaves in the passenger seat when they build these. Check out Episode 52 to see a 4500 with the install

    • @2020HotShotTruckingLLC
      @2020HotShotTruckingLLC 2 роки тому +1

      @@DreamInspired I'll only be driving solo, but with a bunch of big dogs. But there are times when I think the split SB would come in handy and that's all I would want to log SB for. Actually, there was a Volvo parked next to the 450 at the auction and that is what I wanted. Unfortunately the bank selling it couldn't find the title so they pulled it from the auction. The 450 is just an intermediate step and I should profit by building it myself.

    • @DreamInspired
      @DreamInspired  2 роки тому

      @@2020HotShotTruckingLLC Split SB comes in handy weekly here, but if you’re by yourself and your truck isn’t moving, even the guys sleeping in the back seat log that SB time to manage their split clock. Just as long as their truck isn’t moving, you’re not required to make it 100% legal. I’ve seen some incredibly sketchy shit in my short few years, but if those trucks are still moving with sleepers made from plywood, I don’t think you’ll have issues. And sorry your missed out on the Volvo.

    Not trying to put the knock on your truck. It's definitely a beautiful vehicle. No doubt the envy of your friends and others in your business. My problem after putting countless hours and dollars into a truck (or three) like yours is that while they are definitely "a beast" when they are new, they wear out quickly. Right around 150k - 175k miles, the problems begin and it only gets more expensive as the miles go higher. That's why this time around, I decided to get something a little more stout. I bought a used Volvo VNL-430 2 axle with a 63" sleeper. It has a 16 litre Cummins ISX which has been on it's minimum horsepower setting since it was new. It has a brand new Fuller 10spd in it and with the hotshot loads I pull with it, the truck doesn't work hard at all. It has 2-125 gallon tanks on it.. I have dropped some cash in it to install some of the creature comforts we both apparently use like an am/fm/cd/DVD stereo, 10k aux generator, aux air conditioner/heater, 32"tv in the sleeper and other odds and ends. I'm thinking about a satellite dish in the near future. Oh yeah, I'm averaging 6 to 10 mpg and total cash outlay for this truck including the purchase price, all repairs and mods is right around $24k. It's a great truck and at 864,000 miles, it still runs like a beast. Anyway, I just thought I would throw that out there. Have fun man and the best of luck in your business.

Instead of having to build/install a separate gasoline tank, you could have made your aux diesel tank that much bigger. Why did you go with a gasoline driven generator which requires a separate fuel tank? Kubota and Yanmar make diesel generators in that size.

    I've always wanted to do hot shot trucking, I do like driving I think the most I've gone was 1,200 miles in a single day, but that's pretty illegal if you're running commercially lol. Right now I'm in my 1st year apprenticeship as a Union Carpenter which is cool and all, 90/10 insurance plan, pension, sick pay, vacation, the works. Decent pay too. But in the construction world it's not uncommon to be laid off for a month or 2 until another job starts and I always thought that'd be cool to do some light duty shot shot trucking, maybe just some local type stuff within the state or no more than 10-15 hours away when I'm laid off or on the weekends to make some extra money. The only thing I'm not sure / confident about is securing loads and how to tie them down and everything like that, but I guess a CDL class would probably go over all of that. I don't even know if it's 'feasible' to do hot shot trucking every once and awhile here and there as a 'side' job but I don't see why it wouldn't be, if I'm available then I'm available shouldn't really matter, should it?

      If you’re leased on under someone else, it’s a little more doable, but if you’re under your own authority, the insurance and other monthly costs make it a full time gig

      @@DreamInspired Yeah that's kind of what I figured. Maybe it'd be doable to just pull around larger campers and fifth wheelers for dealerships or manufactures or something that sounds pretty low overhead and easy. Then I don't have to buy a trailer, and if I leased under someone else they don't have to buy / lease a trailer for me. I'd just have to talk to a couple companies to see what they say, maybe it's not even doable I don't know I just think it would be fun.

      I'm on the one ton truck category, you spend almost 20 extra grand on the sleeper, but you'll be able to recoup your money with the lesser amount spent on fuel and operating cost. Add to that, the advantage of having a sweet ride once you drop the trailer. To go to fish and hunt or overland, Priceless!! I have a Ford F350 wish I can make it like this guy had it done
