First off congrats on the weight loss, I just left the Clydesdale club a month ago after a long battle with 60 pounds,, I got a Specialized Epic EVO in April, over 500 miles later, its amazing, keep up the good work, enjoy the bike.. Happy Trails...
I was missing such a review from a regular guy's perspective. A really great video and thank you! It pushes me a little and I just bought my first full suspension bike (same in sage green). Let’s roll into 2023 fully equipped. I’m so glad.
Great news on the weight loss. I just bought my first bike at age 55 and I’m at 320. I got the Specialized Rock hopper. I’ve only ridden in my neighborhood so far, but I have put about 40 miles on it. I’m looking forward to going out to the state park when the weather gets better. Keep the faith brother. Keep riding and providing these great videos. You’re inspiring us all.
Nice! I just purchased a new 2022 Stumpjumper Alloy S4 in late November! As you mentioned, I wanted a new bike back in 2020 during the pandemic, and my local bike shop was out of bikes. So I went shopping in the Facebook marketplace. I found a 3 month old Rockhopper for $50 less than a new one if they were available. I bought it and used it hard for almost 3 years. Having a hardtail is a little rough on the lower back. The last time I bought a new bike was way back in 1997 when I purchased my first mtb. It was a Mongoose Hilltopper SX. Great first bike for me, and at the time, I thought it was expensive at around $600. I also still have that first mtb today that I bought back in 1997. It's an oldie but a goodie! This new Stumpy is only my second brand new bike I've ever bought. Being an entry-level full suspension mtb it was much more expensive than any bike I've ever bought. Riding it has proven I made a great investment. I went to the tubeless tire option, and my dealer set that up along with my suspension for my weight. I've never had or tried a dropper seat until this bike, and it's an absolute game changer from my hardtail stationary seat. Thanks for sharing your experience and enjoy the ride!
I am greatefull that you provide your view on this bike, I also want to confirm that on the other side of the pond - we do have same problems, I also reflect more on living now not 'later', also improving on my weight and fitness. MTB is the way to go. This is one of not many good things that came with 2019, more time to reflect on how, when and why I want to do what I am doing. Stumpy is really good choice, kinematics is really great. Please keep in mind that damper is not completely 'sealed' - once a while - you need to use shock pump to bring the pressure up. That's my experience, and ... above 100h or 2yrs riding, it is the absolute maksimum where you should give the damper for the service. That will help to keep it in pristine condition longer.
I have the same bike in the green color, which I loved when I saw both options in the shop. I agree that the SWAT box would have been great but the added cost for carbon wasn’t worth it for me. This bike is amazing for the cost. I surprisingly have almost nothing to complain about with it. Good video man.
Hey there! Did you see the new stumpjumper alloy 2022? It has the swat system on it.. the storage that you are missing.. also had a flip chip for rear adjustment and adjustable head angle I think 2 1/2° .. super cool new features ! Great time to sell yours on and as you lose weight your bike can do all the things you love .. with the ability to adjust that front rake to pretty much downhill .. if you haven't seen it, check it out.. super cool. Great to see a guy in my age and weight range riding.. you really give great information especially on the full suspension which is a rare commodity for bigger guys to see how bikes we see all over UA-cam will react to some weight if even temporarily.. I have a fat bike at the moment and have 29ers that fit it for summer. I rode bmx as a kid and a 24" cruiser with my son in my mid 30s .. and I'm having a really tough time with flat bars I feel like my weight is always too far forward already half way otb lol maybe the fatbike geometry is too xc..I also feel like the center of gravity is super high.. thanks for the videos!
The stumpys are awesome, aren't they! I have the 2019 version of that bike, and like you, I am a clydesdale rider. I have the 2.6 29'er version of those tires, and they work great for the looser stuff. I made two changes to mine: a coil (2021 Fox DHX2) and vitoria airliners - which allow lower air pressures without the tires squirming or folding over. Great videos !
Thanks for your video I been looking for the same bike but was a bit worried that me been 6,3 270-280 was gonna be to much for the bike but nice to see you out there just ripping it🤙🏽
Great video got my 2021 Specialized Stump jumper Alloy Jan 2022 what a pain it is trying to get a darn bike but it worked out great for me. I guess due to this B.S bug and bike and parts hard to get. But mine brand new came with a SRAM Eagle X01 Derailleur / SRAM GX EAGLE DUB Crankset / Threaded Bottom bracket / SRAM Eagle GX Shifter Lunar. Out the door $ 2,835 but due to supply and demand almost a year to find any place that had this bike in my size S4 and color I wanted and how everything is going up F.J.B / But I think I got a good deal. Congrats on the weight loss
Going into my 2nd full year on my stumpy comp st I still like it and it is still solid. Just need to have the dropper rebuilt as it doesn't like to come back up all the time.
I'm using the exact same bike as my motivation to lose weight. Lost 40 so far and when I lose another 35, I get to order my bike. Should be right around when the 2022 models come out. Really appreciate your feedback as I've been going back and forth between the Stumpjumper or the Stumpjumper EVO. Basically for the same reasoning that a bigger guy needs more travel.
Im curious how the bike has held up. I'm interested in one and hear a lot of "you're too big, you'll blow out the hub and shocks, bad leverage ratio for you". It seemed to do really well in your video! I'm still about 10 pounds heavier than you were in that video. Hope you're enjoying the bike!
Honestly, it's just a simple fact that as bigger people we will go through parts faster than lighter people. I blew a rear hub. Stock hubs are not great anyway. That's all I've done. The bike has been bombproof other than that.
I love your videos! You motivated me so much and I am ready to get into mountain biking. I am 6'2" and lost 70lb over the last year down to 350lb. What bike, fatbike and mountain bike will be able to hold my weight?
Really anything will get you going. You may need to fix a part or two more while bigger, but I've ridden for years at that weight and have been fine. I also have a video about my Trek Farley fat bike. Both are great. Get one and let me know about it!
@@MTBMichigan I got a bike today! I got the 2019 trek farley 5. I only did one mile around the neighborhood but it is a start! The only thing that held me back was that the saddle was very painful. What saddle you use?

@@MTBMichigan I did see in a later video that you had lost more weight, congrats! 👏 I was curious if you needed volume spacers at the higher weight.. good to know ty . I had heard that they were necessary if you were in the 250# + range.. have you considered a coil spring on the back? I'm considering a full suspension but don't want to buy one only to have to immediately put$ in on a coil so your information is super interesting. Ty again
@@gregoriodecker2692 typically I would recommend volume spacers over 250. I couldn't get them right away so I just forgot about them. I made adjustments to the suspension to counteract that and found a happy medium as I was losing weight.
Honestly, this is the best bike I've ever owned. I've ridden so many different bikes over the years, but this one feels perfect for me. As for parts I've swapped, the list is low. I wore out my grips so I replaced them with Ergon GA3. I swapped my saddle for the SDG Bellaire 3. And my rear hub gave out so they upgraded it to their best one. That's it.

That is also due to the new compounds. You can create tires that have strong sidewall, have low pressure, high puncture resistance and multiple compounds - though in center and soft rubber on the sides.
