    Whether it's an homage watch or not, I tend to look at this watch for it actually is, a lovely vintage style timepiece with some level of detail and some very tasteful splashes of colour. The ST19 movements stands out nowadays for being the only affordable mechanical hand wind chronograph movement and it's a genuine piece of horological history. In person it looks half decent, I own a 1963. People who criticise the movement for it's finishing are watch snobs in my eyes.

    • @seadweller44
      @seadweller44  2 роки тому +6

      I agree, the ST19 chronograph models are really the ONLY route into a mechanical chrono movement watch that isn’t going to demand a high price tag! And I do think that they perhaps get some unfair bad press regarding the reliability and finishing, especially when considering the price of them and their genuine history.👍🏻

    • @oktc68
      @oktc68 2 роки тому +3

      Agreed! The finishing makes my Swiss made movements look distinctly plain. I too take a watch on it's merits (with the exception of a few Seiko divers, which I covert despite their many flaws and I haven't yet found "better than original" homages of) this Sugess has plenty of appeal.

    • @casualsuede
      @casualsuede 2 роки тому +1

      It's only a homage if you know who the original watch is. If your ignorant like me, it is just another pretty watch well worth the $200.

      I was exactly the same as you! I didn’t find out it was a homage until after I had bought it!!😄

      Watch snobs are hilarious. That finishing must be super useful when it’s sitting in a safe because it cost so much money they’re afraid to wear it.
      Back in the day cheap beater chronographs we’re commonplace because they are _tool watches_ that people used to _measure time_ rather than _flaunt disposable income_

    Actually, the ST19 is the second Sea-Gull chronograph series of movements derived from the Venus 175. The original Venus 17x series had a number of variants, with the 175 being the most popular, bicompax version. Sea-Gull refined the Venus 175, adding two more jeweled pivot points, bringing the total to 19 jewels. This became the Tianjin ST3 series of movements, that were used in the PLAAF D304 "1963" chronographs.
    When Sea-Gull decided to reissue the production version of the D304 in 2007, they created a more modern version of the ST3, adding 2 more jewels, and increasing the beat rate from 18,000 vph to 21,600 vph. This new line of calibers became the Sea-Gull ST19/TY29 Series.

    • @EdgyShooter
      @EdgyShooter 2 роки тому

      One of my favourite things about this is the fact the movement was fully licenced by Venus, they tried to sell it to the Russians first but they already they had their own chronograph so they turned to the Chinese!

    First review I’ve seen of yours Chris and I’m impressed - have duly subscribed. This is a great looking watch & something with the ST19 in the back is probably my next purchase. I do like the look of this but am edging towards the 1963 at the moment - albeit which is the closest to being an ‘official’ supplier and the various price differences between them all, is making my head spin

    Good looking piece, it reminds me a little of the Bulova Surfboard. I would like to see them knock off a millimetre or two from the lugs, especially seeing as this case is used in a lot of watches. I have the ST109 in another watch and have had no issues so far. I think China gets an unfair bad reputation for their quality, sure they make cheap crap but they also make some incredible, reasonably priced goods also and frankly my watch collection wouldn't be nearly as large as it is, if not for what China offers. Seasons Greetings to you and the family bud and I'm looking forward to your upcoming reviews in the New Year. All the best!🎄

      Thanks buddy, very kind 🙏🏻 And yes, I completely agree. Chinese watches/brands do get a hard time sometimes, and it’s a real shame because some China based companies are producing some excellent watches that really do offer bags of quality, innovation and value for money. I think some Chinese watch producers actually represent a vibrant and exciting corner of the market at the moment. Happy holidays to you all, cheers!🎄🍻

    Lovely watch and design- especially love the look of the movement in the back and splashes of orange and red. That said not a fan of the Milgauss 'lightning bolt' chrono hand (Guessing Breitling uses it to represent the same on Deus?). Unless this is anti magnetic it just seems unnecessarily annoying when they could have gone with a simple orange/red chrono hand for the same look.

    No idea what the price difference is, but I prefer the case of the Sugess, altho'the dial looks great on both I prefer the lighter Breitling, and the Sugess hands. The Sugess movement looks nice too. The Breitling has an awful lot to do given the likely price difference. Another example of excellent Chinese watchmaking. Very informative video, thanks and I didn't know it was a homage either, I added it to my list recently but it being a homage doesn't put me off either, good job Sugess!

      @@seadweller44 I recently added a Samurai SRPB51K1 to my collection, I think it's a great looking piece specially when you ditch the supplied bracelet and get it on a Strapcode Hexad, but, when you compare it with a good Chinese watch at a ¼ or ⅓ the price of the Samurai (without the additional cost of the Hexad bracelet) it looks very expensive. Another thing I noticed was that even tho' the Samurai uses essentially the same NH35A movement, all of my Chinese watches run more accurately (on wrist) If I was Seiko's CEO I'd make damn sure that every Seiko that has a 4R35 in it is running at no more than +5 secs per day when it left the factory. I've had +2 secs per day from a couple of Chinese homages, there's no excuse for any Seiko running that movement to perform worse than the cheaper, higher quality (sapphire crystal/ceramic bezel/AR coating/higher accuracy) Chinese homages using the same movement. There are just too many compromises with sub £500 Seiko's which given their history is a great shame. If you can live with a homage, the best of the Chinese brands offer terrific value for money. Some of them even have a few in house designs if homages aren't your thing. Buy them quickly before the world catches on just how good they are.

    • @seadweller44
      @seadweller44  2 роки тому

      I completely agree. For many years, I have collected and had an awful lot of love for Seiko. But when you experience what some Chinese brands have to offer, especially at the price, then you do certainly start to question what you are getting for your money. For me, the recent price increases from Seiko, especially for their dive watches, makes this brand practically out of my price range now, with what would’ve been core models now around £1200 rrp. And as you say, with in house Seiko calibers regularly running with “loose” timekeeping, and a whole plethora of QC issues being a constant concern, it does make me question the brand much more subjectively. Some of the recent Chinese made watches I have purchased over the last few months have been so good, it really has brought this into sharper focus! I have a few more Chinese watches on the way for more reviews over the coming weeks, and I’m really excited to see how they perform in the reviews. Thanks for the comment!👍🏻😄🙏🏻

    Great review Chris - and thanks for the shout out! 😃👍👍👍
    As you may know, I own a few 'homage' pieces, but I now personally think we have to start calling them for what they are - more of a clone than an homage (Clomage is the term that has now been adopted 😄). There is very very little to outwardly differentiate this to the Breitling Top Time Deus. Very little indeed!
    Keep up the great work mate! 😃👊

    A mechanical column wheel chrono with swan neck regulator for under £200 with Swiss pedigree. The seagull offers something the Swiss and Japanese are no where near offering other than for thousands. You cant therefore compare the level of movement finishing with the competition because they are 10 times more at least in cost.

  • @Microwave414
    @Microwave414 Рік тому

    The movement is a bit of a pot luck, my first one was fine except for the part where it was 10 seconds fast a day even though they were suppose to be regulated out of the factory which I consider not exactly regulated myself but at least it's not like my seiko 5 where it jumps around all over the place 30+/- a day. That one broke when the watch hit the ground but luckily it was under warranty and I don't blame that one on the movement, it's a mechanical chronograph and with parts that small I don't care if the swiss, japanese or chinese made it I expect something bad to happen on a fall with a column wheel chronograph. The second one that I've obtained is within 5 seconds a day however sometimes the chronograph movement on activation will just jam up and the watch will stop functioning until you stop the chronograph function and re-start it again. Not the end of the world I just need to be mindful when I do use the chronograph function. When they do work as intended and they are regulated this is a really good, consistent movement but there is a reason why the price is so good, they are not doing serious, rigorous QA testing before shipping these things out. I'd say if you are planning on getting a watch with this movement, maybe get a baltic where those guys hand assemble it themselves and do put in that kind of QA work to know it's working as intended.

    Hey Chris, very nice review of a great looking watch , I don't own mechanical chronograph in my collection and i noticed this around the 11/11 Ali sale , only thing that put me off was the 51mm Lug to Lug ( 6.2inch chicken wrist here) Highly recommend Sir watch geek's channel guy has a great sense of humour, he was the reason i knew this was an homage too :) .........not sure if it's true or not but i did read on the watch nerd vine that Sugess won't be making anymore of these particular models after they sell out

    I keep talking myself in and out of this watch. One reviewer put the brakes on for me by saying these movements were kinda prone to failure. That and a few other quirks like the lug to lug length and I wish they would offer it in a 42mm. A dozen things you tell yourself like I can get the Seiko Flightmaster for the same price. Should I get this model or the other Sugess with the round dials, etc. But at the end of the day all this fuss is half the fun....lol

      @brunogorn5695 2 роки тому

      Thanks for responding, yes after it stop I did give a shake but nothing happened. Full winding until I fill a resistance , is about 20 winds, after 20 winds the crown fills like a spring that wants to go backwards, then I know is full, hope I doing it right.

    • @seadweller44
      @seadweller44  2 роки тому

      No problem. For this movement, full wind is 30 - 40 turns. The ST 1901 is quite stiff to wind in my experience. If there is no power after it stops ( hence give it a little shake), then try winding it up fully (30-40 winds). See how that is.

      Thank you!😄👍🏻🙏🏻 I was looking for similar as well, but couldn’t find anything that was close enough. But I think there is a V2 of this watch from Sugess now, and it comes with a very similar looking strap to the original.

      @@xchazz86 Try to put it on local annonces in your country, if shipping is not expensive : usually as "non working", some people are searching for, either spares for their own watches, otherwise something to repair ... i do both to be honest.
      possibly, to get more success : do a video, with a "hand shake" to see it the balance wheel is moving both directions (good) or not (can be anything ... in that case) :

    sizing is not right . 51mm ltl is a LOT

    • @seadweller44
      @seadweller44  2 роки тому

      Yes, I was a little worried about the L2L size, but no need, on my 7.5 inch wrist, it fits brilliantly.

      @persianchrist 2 роки тому

      @@seadweller44 yeah for your wrist size it's OK but for 6.5 wrist is a no no. Generally this case design with these long lugs are not ergonomic even 38mm version has 46~47mm l2l which is on par with my skx007. Not acceptable

    • @seadweller44
      @seadweller44  2 роки тому

      I understand that this 40mm size may be too big for smaller wrists, but the 38mm is still too big? I only ask, as Ive never tried the 38mm version.

    • @persianchrist
      @persianchrist 2 роки тому

      @@seadweller44 I think for an under 7" wrist size 46~47mm l2l is max. The 38mm version will do but for a 38mm case sized watch such a l2l distance is not acceptable. For this case size 44mm is max. All I am saying is that such a long lug design is wrong

      Yes I see what you mean, and you are right, just part of the individual design I suppose.
