Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Classics, the series where we take a sensible classic car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time we test a rather handsome 1996 Jaguar XJ6 (X300) 4.0 Sovereign and experience a less rattly camera mount, another beige leather interior, a very slick J-Gate transmission, some rather nice styling, novel headlining repairs, a strangely positioned boot release and generally talk about little of any consequence at all.

For anyone looking at this video let me just tell you, these cars are as close to bullet proof as is possible. There arent really any electrical faults, and the engines run and run. Probably the best engine jaguar made. Rust however is a common problem, so find one without rust, they do exist, many of these cars were bought by older gents who cherished them and kept them in a garage. Strangely the 4.0 appears to be no less economical than the 3 2, so go for the 4 if its available. 30mpg on a motorway isnt unheard of, but expect 13mpg around town, giving a real world combined economy somewhere around 20mpg. These cars are at their best cruising at 70 to 80.

Thank you very much indeed for watching! Yes, surprisingly reliable cars, the engines are very strong. I would have preferred the Long Wheelbase version, but this 4.0 was still a very enjoyable drive. Strange how the fuel economy is the same on both the 3.2 and 4.0.

The 3.2 doesn't have the 'S'/ 'N' switch at the gearselector. And in 'N' mode (it's a Jag so N stands for nonchalance) it feels a bit slowish. In the 4 litre one can drive it in the 'S' mode; and since it's a Jag the 'S' stands for sprightly! I have a Daimler Six LWB with the captain seats, and it's a fantastic car. The big six cilinder offers plenty of torque to propel the Daimler. The rpm guage usually indicates around 2.000 rpm which explains the very acceptable fueleconomy for such a car. Don't get the idea that the Six is a slow car, the kick-down in 'S' more than adequate for showing the bourgeoisie your a$$. But what this car does really well is let you relax as it glides effortlessly through traffic.

Only issue is the rear drivers side lock wont unlock/lock with the remote but will if i physically pull/push the lock. Also the radio doesnt work. Other than that shes a beauty.

My Brother bought a Silver one owner 1994 XJ40 4 Litre in 2009. It was from a lady whose Husband sadly passed away. The car was sitting in the driveway gathering leaves for months and she let it go for £600. It started and drove the 70 miles home with no trouble at all. Passed its MOT with only new discs and pads and no advisories.
Unfortunately, with three young children and other commitments he had to let it go after 18 months.
To this day, it is still the best car I have ever driven. Very special.

I too love old Jags but have yet to find sufficient courage to try running one myself! You are perfectly correct Joseph a rusting front wing should never be seen as a reason to condem a otherwise decent car - most of them are simple bolt-on panels and can be fitted and sprayed for a few hundred pounds by a reasonable body shop. The heroic levels of lacquer peel on this XJ would however be a bigger issue I suspect.

Great report Lloyd. I am a big Jaguar fan. My very first car was a Jaguar way back in the early 70"s. My second car was Jaguar XJ6 series 1 and I just loved that car. About six years ago I went looking for a real classic luxury car. Not by big brand name because I was looking for the traditional luxuriousness and very comfortable ride that is very hard to find these days. I settled on a 1996 XJ6 4ltr X330. model, which has the longer wheel base for the comfort of my passengers. I noted that the sports models like many modern cars had a stiffer ride. That was not for me so I went for the comfortable soft waffty ride that I enjoyed in my orignal series one. Jeff Lawson was involved in designing this car and it was voted by a panel of Milanese designers, as the most beautiful saloon car in the world. It does remind me more of the series 1 and 2, that the other models/series that followed. In 1994 It certainly got its original curves back (very similar to series I and 2) and with the simpler design using the artistic rules of balance, harmony and order, Jeff Lawson created a work of art that we may never see the likes of in cars again. My friend had a RR Shadow 2 and just traded it for a newer Bentley from the late 80's. I passed many Shadows by in my time and don't regret it. When it come down to practicality I know which car I would always chose. But unfortunately after this car, it will be very difficult to find a car that comes up to this one.

I had the pleasure of being "Chauffeured" in a red XJ8 similar to this, similar interior colour. It makes feel like royalty!
The official interior colour is either parchment or oatmeal, the name designation used by Jaguar. The XJ12 was the pinnacle of Jaguar at the time, and those examples are extremely rare! I'm not sure if we did get the Vanden Plas in 1996, I do remember the Sovereign. I also remember handling as being very capable, in combination with a very comfortable ride.
Another spot to watch out for are the sunroof drains, as with any vehicle with a sunroof, they do clog, and could be the reason why they rust in those particular areas of the front wings. There are channels to help you repair and maintain this particular example, which I highly recommend watching, as well as your own channel! An excellent review!

So could we be seeing the successor to your Rover. Although does it have heated seats like the Rover?
I thought the supercharged versions were 370hp (I may be thinking of the V8).
I think one of the reasons for the lack of room is that they had not changed the design since 1968. And with side impact beams and all the other safety features I suspect the interior shrank.
Love a car you have to get out of Dukes of Hazzard style. 🙂
Can one of these ever be thought of as ‘sensible’?

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting

They could be sensible, sir... I mean, Andrew takes his family around in it and gets up to 30 mpg! I think it had heated seats, I can't quite remember at the moment. The Rover is staying, don't worry, although this is quite tempting. I think the 370 bhp version would be the V8. Good old Dukes of Hazzard, sir!

I have had over 30mpg driving at legal speeds on main roads out of this car. There was an inline 6 supercharged version of this, made with a GM autobox or a very rare getrag manual. This one has been very reliable and a very good car to me 👍

Very nice car, suits you sir, love the beige interior, the lack of rear leg room is like my mates Audi a6,its a 2014 model ,very long car and very cramped in the rear,as andy would say to Lou I don't like it

My mates just sold his grey 1994 4.0 litre Sovereign with a little over 65k from new. It was sitting for 10 years, and passed it's MOT first time, with no advisories, Body was mint, no rust or dents. Just a few patches of lacquer peel, grey leather interior and wood was immaculate. It also had the sunroof as well as air conditioning.

Oh sir, that sounds like a lovely car. I do like working air conditioning and some nice wood on the interior. Looks as if lacquer peel was a common problem with these cars.

LWB is the only proper version of those cars. Because a SWB X300 is even shorter than any comparable luxury car. Even a bmw 3series of that era gives you much more leg room.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 роки тому +1

The rear space is surprisingly limited in one of these. Otherwise, a very, very lovely car, but maybe the LWB would be the sensible choice.

Looks lovely! Shame that you had to sell it. I am afraid that UA-cam doesn't really like links being put into comments, so I had to seek it out a bit, but I was able to watch the video and it was certainly worth it. If I owned one of these XJs it would have to be the long wheelbase version.
