  • Today, I’m going to tell you the story of the second generation of Jaguar XJ produced from 1986 to 2003 in three stages: XJ40 from 1986 to 1994, X300 from 1994 to 1997, and X308 from 1997 to 2003.
The development of this generation took 14 years and many millions of miles of test driving. Here is an interesting video about this: • making the forty - ful...
These cars are rather cheap now because they have a dubious reputation regarding their reliability. And yes, they had issues with electrics and rust. But actually, the XJs made after 1990 are not that bad if they well-maintained. The engines were very reliable, and the cars we very comfortable.
It wasn’t the fastest car on the road, but it wasn’t slow at all, particularly with V12 or supercharged I6 and V8 engines.
They still had a feeling of aristocracy and luxury, and still were very enjoyable to drive both in relaxed or sportive modes.
Unfortunately, not many of them survived in really good condition, but the prices for them right now are very attractive considering the value-for-money ratio.

Great video! The pronounciation is a bit difficult to understand sometimes, but the information is 100% accurate and complete.

XJ 1-3 Series have a height of 1,34M
    XJ40 1,37M
X300/X308 XJ's are the lowest among all XJ's, with a height of 1,31M.
X350 is 1,44M, so Jaguar really decided to leave the path, of making the lowest Super Sedans ever.
That's what make's driving the older XJ's so unique!
    I decided to buy an updated(Dec 2000) X308 Daimler Super V8, 3 years ago.
    Never had any regrets.
Bought the cheapest in the Country,(last owner was a 72 year old) because, U know, on these Cars, because of their age, all parts will eventually break down.
The first thing my mechanic pressed me to do was maintenance on the 5G-Tronic, because I bought the car without maintenance history.
In 3 years I had like 15 issues, and all fixed.
For example, the Main Radiator needed replacement, but all connector tubes were stuck, so my mechanic had to go MacGyver..to reconnect, the new Radiator.
Next MOT in 1 month, I get rear brakes fully replaced(discs, pads ect).
As for the AJ-V8 engine, and the 5G-Tronic transmission, if bought in a good state.
These can easily handle 400K Km.
Every time I drive the XJ, it is an experience in so many ways.
From handling when using the J-Gate, listening to music, to joyful looks of strangers, making me proud to be able to keep such a nice Classic on the road.
Before ever buying an XJ, make sure U know an experienced Mechanic, with passion for the Car, and decent prices.
Thank You for this nice Video & Greetings!
A nice old video about the XJ40, and reliability!
