Explaining penny boards, showing you the alternatives and helping you to decide whether you should buy one?
    Want to get it?
Penny boards are tiny plastic cruiser boards that have become very popular and mainstream over the years. Lots of people that don’t necessarily skate probably have one. They’ve become cool to people that aren’t in the skate-industry and as a reaction to that they also get a little hate by skaters.
I’m not going to talk about whether I think they’re cool or not cause to be honest I couldn’t care less. I think the board is an awesome method of transportation and the size of it was the main reason for me to get one.
Let’s take a good look at the product as a whole.
First I wanna make it clear that the penny board comes in three sizes, 22”, 27” and 36”. I’ll only be talking about the 22” one because the small size of that one is the biggest reason I like it so much. If you wanna get a bigger one, you’re really looking at the size of a regular cruiser or longboard and there are tons of other companies that are specialized into that and make better ones for sure.
Those bigger ones also don’t come with grip tape so by that you can already tell that they’re not perfect if you wanna get serious about skate or longboarding.
If the Penny board is the first ever skateboard you’re planning to buy I do recommend learning regular skateboarding first because it’s so damn fun and that way you also understand way more of skateboarding than just riding around. I do get that getting a regular skateboard is also quite expensive and I do have to that it’s not necessary because you can learn to ride around on a penny board just fine. It’s just a bit harder because of the small size. If someone ever tells you it’s not possible to learn how to ride on a penny board they’re probably just full of shit.
However if you’re planning to get into real skateboarding don’t get a penny board as your first skateboard. Yes it's possible to do tricks on it but learning real difficult skate tricks must be learned on a real skateboard.
That leads me to my next point, what are you planning to do with it. Riding on it and getting from point a to b on it is fast and way more comfortable than your regular skateboard. The small size it comes with makes it ideal to just carry around. I can easily strap it on my backpack and I hardly notice it because it just weights less than 2 kilograms, which isn’t the case for my regular board
For me this makes this product just so good, It’s almost as convenient as my bicycle and I can strap it on my backpack.
Are you already a skater and you don’t have a small cruiser yet. Get one!
You don’t you have any skateboarding experience, you don’t really care about skateboarding but you do think it’s fun, you are willing to learn how to ride around on one and you just want to use it for transportation. Get one!
You think skateboarding is cool and you wanna get into it. Then I’d say no! Get a real board and experience real skateboarding. Real skateboarding is so much fun and much more diverse than just riding around on a penny board!
Next, what about the price and the alternatives.
Well as you might know, Penny boards are expensive. The quality of these boards are good but you can get alternatives from other real good legit skate companies aswell. Don’t go to your wallmart or local toy store, go to a skate store or look at skateboarding webshops. These prices of these other good mini cruisers will start at around 50 bucks, they will look exactly the same as a penny board and they’ll also have the same or even better quality. No you will not buy a fake penny board because tiny plastic skateboards have been around since almost the beginning of skateboarding. Some-one that’ll call you out for that is probably a poser except if you’re riding a board that really says penny-board when it’s not from penny.
So, for me, my penny board has been around for a while now. As you see I had to swap out the bearings since someone had thrown mine into a fountain a while back. It’s been really awesome and convenient to me but If I had to buy one right now I would probably get another mini-cruiser from another skateboarding company or I would make the deck itself and buy the rest in a store.

I bought a penny board as my first skateboard and loved it. 4 years later, I bought a skateboard. After getting comfortable on the skateboard, it was so hard to ride the penny. I would much prefer the nickel. The size was the main issue. I got too comfortable to my skateboard that the penny felt toooo compact. The penny was amazing for it's transportability and weight though

Exactly. One of the big advantages of a Penny is that it is so small and light, also automatically lowering the barrier for taking it actually with you outside. It even fits in most bags. Further it is one of the few skateboards which airport security often does not even bat an eye to, because it is so tiny and plastic.
It all depends on what you want with your skateboard and where you live. For the crowded narrow medieval streets of Amsterdam center for example, the last thing I need is a big cumbersome non-electric wooden longboard.

    • @JDYTC
      @JDYTC 6 років тому +4

Or get some sense and do not use retarded fallacies ya kook. But since you did anyway, "GOOD" in what exactly and according to what subjective standards from whom? There are many different types of "skateboard[s]" and a Penny is one of them.
Further, a wooden trick board will never cruise as "GOOD" as a plastic cruiser. A wooden trick board will also never hold up as "GOOD" as an original Penny (since a wooden trick board will chip, crack and break much sooner).
As long as you have fun. Haters gonna hate anyway. Fact of life. Fuck those kooks. Just don't care and have fun!

My first board was a penny board 4 months ago. I had no problems learning on it, but due to its short length, riding at higher speeds is terrifying.
I graduated from a penny board to a mini-cruiser in just a week. I learnt more fun techniques like slides and LDP from there.
The problem with penny boards is that, you can get a decent mini-cruiser for similar price, and it is MUCH easier to learn and you can even learn some tricks. Not to mention they're definitely cooler to carry around than penny's.
Lugging around a longboard, while cumbersome, is definitely the coolest out of all the boards!

Cool video! The majority of the vids about small cruisers - Penny Board for example - are negative about it and some of them even snobbish when talking about why you should not buy this board. Nice to hear you enjoy your commute! I had my first small board when I was around 8 years old, almost 30 years ago. That time is was the first step towards a proper skateboard but today living in one of the biggest and most populated cities of the Western hemisphere this small cruiser is pretty awesome to commute with! I don't want to do tricks or look cool but to get from A to B and it does the job brilliantly.

Here is my recommendation. Buy a Walmart penny board for like 20 bucks (it comes with a decent deck with metal trucks) and just upgrade the wheels to cruiser wheels (because the original have a hardness of around 100) and new bearings. The total should be around 40-50 dollars... have fun 👌

just like this guy, i got one about 5-7 years ago...i rode it a little, and forgot about it...in that time i started surfing in florida...went back home to pennsylvania, and didnt want my skills to go away during my visit so i found my old penny (6 winters in cold garage), and it is way better than i remember it...i took a street board out and of course the penny, the street board had such terrible shock absorption that it was stressful to ride...the penny rode over bottle caps, street cracks, road debris like nothing, after a while i didnt even have to look out for junk on the street because it seems to hover over it...when i was young the cool thing was to do tricks, but there is something to be said for enjoying a smooth ride and simply making turns in as short of an angle as possible, shifting hips and shoulders, and feeling the boards reaction...basically, the penny is a lot more like surfing...i love it, and i will definitely be taking it back with me to florida...one last thing, i am 220 lbs and i love how the plastic sorta molds to your planted foot after a while, you fall right into place for riding

  • @Blackdragon5284

Got a penny board for cruising around campus (was a cheap knock off one because I didn't see the point in spending much on such a small board). Normally, I ride a longboard pretty much everywhere I go as a means of travel. So, not being used to such a small board, I don't know how many times I've fallen off the thing, or done the splits because I end up missing the back of the board with my pushing foot. I get the idea of having a small board for ease of carrying and ability to just stash it under a desk, but I'd really recommend either getting a short cruising board or going for the bigger nickel board. The extra space for your feet, superior turning ability and less wheel bite of a bigger board far outweighs the space saving of the penny board. I mean, if you absolutely must have a small board, then go for it, but I can't really think of many reasons for having a board that small when you get so many more benefits of a slightly bigger board. I guess it's pretty fun and challenging to ride, but it's more of a finiky gimmick than a workhorse.

I think the best idea is to get a regular trick board to learn, or even borrow one because it's an easy size to go up to a longboard, or transfer your skills to a smaller one. It was really difficult at first to get use to the small penny but bc I was comfortable on a street skateboard then it was SOO much easier. Within like 10-20min I was fine on a penny. Pennys are fun and cute.

But do you guys think it still fits on a backpack or is it still as convienant as an regular pennyboard?

    • @spankyjeffro5320
      @spankyjeffro5320 6 років тому

Regular cruisers are heavier than a penny board, for sure.
But, I find that the bigger cruiser offers more stability since they're wider (mine is 9inches wide).
You could still put a regular cruiser on a backpack, but it's much easier just to ride or carry them.
