Outdoor Sound Test - Pair of Bose L1 Pro 32's - 1 Sub1 vs 2 Sub1's

  • I just picked up a pair of Bose L1 Pro 32's and two additional Sub 1's for a total of 4 Sub 1's!! I took them all to my usual testing grounds to see what they could do. They are loud! They are clear as a bell - and - they are balanced from bottom to top!! These are by far the best column line array speakers I've ever heard. The sound is similar to studio monitors - but really, really loud and immersive. I actually had to drop the stereo mic on the camera by 10 dB to keep it from clipping (I haven't had to do this on any of my other videos). If you have the money to go this route - you will not be disappointed. I'm able to fit this entire setup in my compact hybrid car along with two Gigbar 2 light rigs and still have room for a passenger. It's crazy just how loud, but compact and lightweight this setup is. It's also absolutely true what Bose touts about these 32 articulated driver arrays - I was able to walk away from the speakers approximately 100'-0" and it was still performance level loud - and - not just overwhelmingly harsh at the very front (loud dance level).
Two Sub1's stacked is roughly equal to a single Sub2. The Sub2's frequency range (-10dB) extends down to 29Hz - The Sub1's frequency range (-10dB) extends down to 32Hz. A pair of stacked Sub1's would put out a maximum peak SPL of 130.6 dB, while a single Sub 2 puts out 129.8 dB. The big difference for an old guy like me is that I can carry two Sub1's much easier than I can carry a single Sub2.
I used the same pair of 500 watt (1000 watt peak) battery packs that I've been using for my other tests and they worked up to a point - but - I was not able to reach clipping with two Sub 1's on each side without losing power. I was able to reach clipping with a single Sub 1 each side and it sounded awesome! For country, folk, singer songwriter, jazz or even classic rock a single Sub 1 will probably do the job just fine - but - with two Sub 1's - you can actually feel the kick drum in your chest. Mids are rich and the highs are crisp. I'm now getting another battery / inverter setup to see if I can bring them to full power. More to come!!

@@bestproaudio4255 Agree 100% about the need for two speakers but you don't need to get another Pro32. I run a single Pro32 with a second aux speaker. Both speakers run mono from Aux outs of my mixer. As a second speaker I use a QSC K8.2, an EV30m, or if you want the best a RCF TT10. Haven't tried it but even a $400 Mackie Thump Go would work. All add the missing clarity or the few high end frequencies missing from the Pro32.

The Pro 32 has far better high frequency response vs the Model II. The model topped out at 12 KHz +/- 3db. The Pro 32 is rated 18Khz +/- 3db.

I prefer stereo but in most settings you won’t hear any separation. The 180 dispersion kills the stereo image unless your speakers are separated by a great distance.

    For Now I listen thru.....
    2 S1pros with 1 Sub 1.
After watching this video 10x's I think I might like 2 Bass speakers in the background left and right of the mids and highs front and center (a tri-angle layout)?
Thanks for the Demo. Geoff. Mission Viejo Ca.

Awesome idea - I'll give it a shot!! It would definitely disperse the lows much more evenly. One downside is that I'll need to use XLR cables instead of the Submatch cable - but I believe it's possible!

The Pro 32 has 5 KHz higher frequency response than the L1 Model II.
As for stereo I prefer it but you need a good distance between them for any stereo image as the 180 degree dispersion will obliterate the stereo image. I

I'm experimenting on best set up option for live band in a church parking lot setting (and future outdoor events). I don't want to use my pair of QSC K12.2s and a KS118 (in fact I want to offload them to make room and save my back).
I have 2 L1 pro32s with sub2s and a T8S. I see that I need this at least 20' apart and would like to see if it's better to use my L & R channel outs of the T8S to create a stereo rather than daisy chaining it to mono. Any thoughts on how to set tgis right? (I will also use a pair of S1 Pros w sub1 for monitors.) ...or is mono better for live?
Any suggestion on best connection is appreciated.

I've got a pair of Pro32's with Sub2's. I really want to get a Sub1 for smaller gigs so I don't have to lug the Sub2 (really Bose? Only one handle?). but can't bring myself to spend the money when the Sub2 will do the same job.

I'm amazed at how much the Sub1s will handle... 35 lbs... They're very impressive with the Pro 32s.... I bought 4 to equal the Sub2s and be easier to carry. I can also use cardioid mode, which actually works very well if needed.

@@bestproaudio4255 when I bought mine I had cardioid mode in mind but didn’t realize you’re not meant to space the subs apart and couple them. I think you made the right choice unless you need a lot of bass. I don’t like lugging the Sub2’s.

I just bought a set of 2x s1 pro and 1xsub1 and unfortunately I think it will be difficult to DJ for 50 people. The bass above a certain volume simply knocks as if it had no excursion and there is no bass, only an impact can be heard. Now I don't know whether to buy a second sub1 or replace it with one sub2. If anyone has this set, please try playing the song Katchi by Offenbach and write whether there is any bass knocking at loud levels?

@@DavidB_AudioTech Correct. I sold sub1, it was too weak for me (I play as a DJ with 2xS1 Pros). If you set the sub above 12:00 and give a large signal, the bass knocks, knocks... you can hear this metallic impact. The unit simply does not produce strong bass. In my opinion, sub1 is for playing light music (jazz, classical, soul). So I bought a sub2 for dance music.
