Great reaction! Thanks especially for the double-header! Ms. Courtney Hadwin is, frankly, one of the BEST young singer-songwriters out there, IMHO. Sign of the Times showed a lot of her vocal skills and tone that many don't notice when she's rocking out. Exceptionally versatile.
The big advantage that young kids have growing up now is watching CLASSIC top-notch performances on UA-cam. Ms. Courtney STUDIED old James Brown performances, she knew Janis Joplin, Little Richard, Etta James (upon whose adaptation/performance she arranged this, her own, performance), and even the singer-songwriter and his band who wrote this song and whose label posthumously released this hit song after Otis Redding and his band died when his private plane crashed on their way to next gig in December 1967.
Listening to grandparents' music also helps, as with both Ms. Angelina Jordan and Ms. Courtney Hadwin. These kids of GenZ and later don't HAVE to hang around backstage at concerts to learn from the greats like Mick Jagger did. Even when they're more interested in current cutting-edge pop and fusion of various trending styles, like young Ms. Daneliya Tuleshova, the advantages GenZ and later kids have with accessing audio/video of top performers makes learning (and when young, imitating) pop stars vastly easier than for prior generations.
I'd suggest jumping to most recent time Ms. Courtney was onstage: live at Carnegie Hall with the NY Pops orchestra on their 41st Annual Birthday Gala, this year honoring the life and times of Mr. Clive Davis. Mr. Davis chose Ms. Courtney to open as first guest artist in honor of Ms. Janice Joplin and Mr. Davis' early career running record labels and choosing winning artists. He asked Ms. Courtney to sing "Piece of My Heart". Ms. Courtney posted an 'official' video of most of this performance on her UA-cam channel, but I prefer a fan-made vid mashup of that official footage mashed-up with fan footage from the balcony. Unfortunately, even THAT mashup misses the reported standing ovation and enthusiastic response of this discerning audience (and it misses reported interactions backstage with the many famous artists also invited as guest performers). Here's the mashup (sorry we don't have better audio and video):
    ua-cam.com/video/gDM9jYavLqA/v-deo.html
Here's an interview with Grammy-winner Mr. Kevin Bowe, who's collaborating with Ms. Courtney and producing her forthcoming debut album (FINALLY!), where he's talking about her and about that Carnegie Hall performance and her personal invitation by Clive Davis to lead off this Gala's guest artists. She was still 19, turning 20 only about 10 weeks later. Excerpt: ua-cam.com/video/DFbWnNZ0qH4/v-deo.html
Thanks again, loved your active reaction to the astounding Ms. Courtney. Please make time for more of her. Try also her 'Pretty Little Thing' performance on AGT: The Champions from January 2019 still at age 14 [birthday in July].

Courtney sings so well because she allows her mind and body to establish a mental and physical link to the song and what the song wants to say and she controls her voice so well.
She cares how she sounds and she prepares exceptionally well.
She enjoys what she is doing and that includes the rehearsals and the make up of the song, it's needed instruments. Actually, Pretty Little Thing, that she sang at agt has two versions. The one she sang at agt and an acoustic only version.l.
Her carnigae performances has been viewed more times than any of the shows the pop people have had in the past.

Hi. Great reaction. So cool that you came across Courtney's music, or maybe it's better to say, rediscovered Courtney's music. She is amazing. Truly a generational level talent. Since you reacted to both a gorgeous ballad here as well as a song where Courtney was rocking out, you have some idea of the unbelievable vocal power, control and range that she has. Courtney is equally as great across so many genres including Rock, R&B, Funk, Soul, Ballads and more. She even had an opera clip go viral. The most incredible thing is, whatever the genre, there is never a drop off to the incredible quality of her music. Virtually all artists, even the biggest, have their comfort zone. Inside that zone, they are great, but take them outside that zone, and not so much. We've yet to see where Courtney's comfort zone ends, because she can sing virtually anything exquisitely.
You know a little about Courtney's history, but a little background for you and your subscribers. The AGT part may be redundant for you:
Courtney first rose to worldwide fame when she appeared on America's Got Talent (AGT) in 2018 when she was 13. Her audition went viral and now has over 1 billion overall on line views. Courtney herself is closing in on 3 billion views. She has die-hard fans from virtually every country in the world. While on AGT, Courtney sang exclusively classic rock from the 60's and 70's by the likes of James Brown, Tina Turner and Janis Joplin. Courtney was so great on AGT that she was almost immediately signed to a record deal at Syco/Arista records (Sony Music). After AGT, those that knew her from only there, viewed her as this fabulous stage dominating rocker, which she surely is. but, she is so, so much more. As I mentioned above, her range is astounding. So in 2019, she released an EP called the 'Cover Sessions' where she took some of the biggest recent hits (Sucker, Old Town Road, Someone You Loved and Sign of the Times, that you just reacted to) across different genres, and re-invented them into her vision of the way they could have been sung. They were all sensational. The purpose was to highlight both her incredible vocal versatility and her off the charts creativity. All of the 'Cover Session' songs are available on her UA-cam channel.
Courtney went through hell to start getting her original music out. First, her label, for years trying to turn her into something she didn’t want to be. Another pop princess. Can you imagine that magnificent voice you just heard being limited to just pop, but there’s more. Of course, there was Covid, which delayed her album release for more than two years. Then her label was sold, creating even more chaos. At the beginning of 2023, as soon as she could, she walked away from her label and went independent.
Courtney has a huge song library that she hasn't been able to release because of the reasons described above, but she has shared many of them, in whole or in part with fans, and they are all sensational. She is such a powerhouse as a songwriter. Since she has gone independent in 2023, she has already released five mind blowing originals. They are 'Breakable', a gorgeous gritty ballad, 'That Girl Don't Live Here', an uptempo fabulous jazzy number with a touch of almost 1940's swing, 'Call Me Back', which will rip your heart out every time you hear it, 'Monsters', a magnificent rock anthem and 'Christmas Rocks', a rocky Christmas song that simply demands you move with it. All are available on her UA-cam channel. Now that she's independent, she has said to expect a release every month or two. So buckle up. Next up is the release of her long delayed debut album, which Courtney confirmed she just finished recording. Based on what we have heard, the album is going to be absolutely epic. I can't wait to hear you react to more of Courtney's music.
So, the most recent big event in Courtney world. On April 29th, the New York Pops honored Clive Davis with a huge concert at Carnegie Hall. Everyone who is anyone in music was there. Courtney was invited to open the show. She blew off the roof and the doors and brought the entire audience to their feet at Carnegie in a standing ovation with a rip roaring, stage dominating rendition of Janis Joplin's 'Piece of my Heart'. Janis was Clive's first signee. It was mind boggling. Courtney shared the stage with many all time greats tied to Clive like Barry Manilow, Dionne Warwick, John Mellencamp, Busta Rhymes and many more. The New York Pops released a 2+ minute clip of her performance. It quickly had over 2.5M views on IG and over 3M on TikTok. By far the most views of any video the New York Pops has released since they started posting in 2014. Too bad they didn't release the whole thing, because Courtney's full performance was spectacular. Until just the last week, it had been the only individual performance that the Pops had released from the concert. Kind of says something about how fabulous they thought it was.

Left a message earlier, but my pc was acting finicky and wouldn't allow me to post it.
Basically said some of what Edward mentions and that Clive Davis loved her enough to invite her to perform at his Birthday Gala at Carnegie Hall with so many other great artists along with the New York Pops Orchestra. A few others artist not mentioned in Edwards comments were Carlos Santana and Dione Warwick along with so many others from all different genres. Yet, Courtney was asked by Clive to perform her rendition of Janis Joplin's (who was his 1st artists signed) of "Piece of my Heart". No matter where or when Courtney performs, anyone who understands the process an artist has to go through and can recognize true talent, understands how much passion and dedication, along with talent, it takes to be as good as she is. She's one of a kind and that is what will separate her apart from all the other talented artists out there. There's only a few new artists out there, who when they perform and start singing that you immediately know who they are. She's now doing what her labels couldn't do in 4 years all on her own as an independent artist. (See Edwards comment).
The other thing many people don't know, about her journey to become an artists early on, who 1st saw her on AGT, was the backlash and bullying she received while trying to become the best she could be early on. Even her labels didn't get her talent. Her original song "lyrics", she release this past year, suggests some of that stuff she had to deal with. I think today, she's learned the business and how she has no control over what people may think and feel about her and is happy just being able to be herself and do her own thing. She has always stated and preached to "Just be yourself". Looking forward to more reactions from you of Courtney Hadwin. She has truly helped bring back so many music lovers back to following great artists again, along with finding people like yourself who enjoy her music.

Some of the reasons have been discussed as to why there are these young great singers. Another reason, I believe, is that the really good ones have been on a somewhat individual path, supported by the Internet, and not being restricted to some music label's idea of how they should sing while homogenizing their vocals with autotune, etc. Furthermore, I don't think there are THAT many more great ones--we are just more aware of them through social media. Anyway, Courtney is my favorite. If you are going to do more Courtney, I will subscribe. The full fan version of Courtney's Carnegie Hall opening performance with the link by "@givingin..." in the comments would be a great next reaction!

She's now 19 going on 20, released her 1st 5 originals, and is about to drop her 1st album of originals soon. Amen! And, believe it or not, I actually wish three young singers-songwriters would collab on at least one trio:
Ms. Courtney and Ms. Angelina, who share old music from the roots of modern music in the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970s. AND young Ms. Daneliya Tuleshova who's more the pop princess, but with a world-wise edge and the strength of her ethnic Kazak musical heritage, like her friend and countryman Dimash. Each is on a different path, yet each is TRULY UNIQUE, with passion pouring out over the audience, making each performance truly memorable with exquisite voices, tones, and control. I can hear them singing as an exceptional trio of young superstars-in-the-making. They're each in their own lane, yet each is uniquely combining influences and ignoring traditional genre boundaries to bring their unique music, done their way. I truly believe there is enough overlap and flexibility in each of these young voices to make at least one mind-blowing trio song, together. Each has the versatility and flexibility and skills and, of course talent, to do far more than just blow the roof off any venue. Moreover, each uses their music to encourage people and the world to CHANGE. A GenZ hallmark.

Just so you know, the titles of her four videos are "Breakable", "That Girl Don't Live Here", "Call Me Back", and "Monsters". The first and third are more ballad type and somber. The second and fourth are very upbeat. (The second is actually Jazz; the fourth is rock, maybe even punk). Her Christmas song, "Christmas Rocks" is the strongest rock of them all. I share this with you so you know that she is very productive and cares about her craft. Also, if you are interested in reacting to any of them, you have the titles.

  • @jamesgilles6378

These covers and the John Lennon Christmas song were the main things her record company set up for her. Still, she felt thwarted by them for two or three years where she was unable to do anything. She became independent in 2023 and released four videos of her own work and one audio Christmas song. This year she is doing an album and already performed at Carnegie Hall for the Clive Davis honors. She is totally on her way. Our country will all hear of this marvel!!!!!!

Wonderful double reaction to the fantastic Courtney Hadwin. While a lot of people compare her to the likes of Janis Joplin, Mick Jagger and the like, to me she is on the same level as the likes of Meat Loaf, Celine Dion, Bonnie Tyler and others like these. The way that she can emote through the music, not just perform it.
I have been a fan of hers since AGT, five years ago. She has sung many covers over the years. There is a fantastic video of her when she was nine or ten years old covering Adele's Rolling In The Deep. It is here on YT, just type in the search bar Courtney Hadwin Adele, it will be the top link. Another good performance is Etta James' At Last.
That Sign of the Times song was a part of a quartet of covers in the same session. The others are Sucker, Someone You Loved and Old Town Road. Another fantastic cover she did during one of the many Covid lockdowns was her Quarantine version of Tina Turners What's Love Got To Do With It. You should check out that one too, it is a B&W video of her with a guitar by a mic.
Two years ago, around her 18th Birthday, she did a karaoke performance at a Tiki Bar in Turkey. She was also signed to Syco Records after AGT and those four cover songs, and a cover of John Lennon's Merry Xmas The War Is Over were the only official releases that she had with them. After these, the label was sold and they tried to change her into another generic Pop star.
Last year she was released from the contract, and she released five songs. Breakable, That Girl Don't Live Here, Call Me Back, Monsters and Christmas Rocks. This year, she was the opening performance at the NY Pops in Carnegie Hall, and she has finished recording her debut album with 10 - 20 other original songs. Any time now it is being processed, and ready to be released.

Courtney was actually on the voice UK, but didn't win! I actually went off the programme after that. She then went on to try to crack the US through Americas' got Talent. I was glad to be reminded of her, (thanks Ginxters). She does a great Janis Joplin cover Take Another Piece of My Heart? If you close your eyes you can almost imagine it's Janis and THAT is really saying something ? Her own stuff doesn't quite hit the mark, for me, but I did like Breakable a lot.

The Voice KIDS UK, season 1, first day of blind auditions, everyone was still just getting used to how this all worked. will.i.am and Pixie Lott both expressed sorrow at not having turned for 13 year old Ms. Courtney Hadwin's performance after they saw her repeat a part of her performance at request of will.i.am who also hadn't turned for her. Epic! Emulating her hero, Ms. Tina Turner, with a bit of James Brown, Etta James, Janice Joplin, and maybe a hint of Mick Jagger thrown into her performance of "Nutbush City Limits" for her blind audition.
      ua-cam.com/video/aUgke-UydXo/v-deo.html
Frankly, her superactive performance of James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)" in Semi-Finals (third performance; where first was blind audition) was just STELLAR, and rather shocked her coach Danny Jones with her JUMPING down off stage to land in front of the coaches for big finish of song. She followed Danny's advice to just leave everything out on that stage. She collapsed at end as exclamation point to her VERY James Brown performance! STELLAR stage presence when she's performing.

@@givingin2G4Courtz Great details. Will I am for the most part is the one who started the comparison to Janis Joplin for Courtney that most think it was Howie. Really it was her vocal coach Julie who spurred her on to dig deep to find out who Janis was before Voice kids UK. I always thought her best vocal performance on that Voice kids show was her finale "And I'm telling you" She killed it and got slack by some for being to animated and powerful.

Welcome Back To The Wonderful World Of Courtney Hadwin! Great reaction! IDK Y it took 6 days for me to see it, I always watch reactions to Courtney's videos. Algorithm must be sleeping on the job. Reactions to her AGT audition were my very favorite thing on UA-cam for 3 years. You've rediscovered her at an exciting time, the Carnegie Hall performance about 6 weeks ago, after which she travelled with her outstanding producer Kevin Bowe, who attended the concert with her, to Minnesota, and completed recording the vocals at his studio there for her upcoming album. The 5 original songs she released last year are great, but the "snippets" she's shared of the new songs are mindboggling!
So much else happened since AGT. AGT Champions where she sang a new song called Pretty Little Thing, which I think was supposed to be her first single, and I think she still wants to record, but she's kinda disowned it (long story), the other 3 "live cover" songs with the same two musicians, Covid quarantine, when she first started accompanying herself on guitar for many covers and some originals she wrote, her cover of John & Yoko's Happy Xmas (War Is Over), a "Hawaiian karaoke bar" in Turkey on the shores of the Black Sea where she was celebrating her 18th birthday and treated the patrons with Proud Mary and Always Remember Us This Way, and 4 beautiful official videos for the first 4 originals last year, Breakable, That Girl Don't Live Here, Call Me Back, and Monsters (Christmas Rocks is the only one of the 5 she didn't make a video for).
