If the cash being held by inventory is an issue and you have a good relationship with your vendor you can spread deliveries, and therefore payments, over time. That way you can still get the discount without the full payment up front. You'll still be out the money over say 3-months, but it's an option if cash flow is tight. Some vendors might prefer it depending on what their own internal capacity is like.
