I love the effects you got with the pan pastel on the flowers! As far as always overdoing it, I relate! We need to imagine a tiny Bob Ross on our shoulder, saying all the while: "You're having so much fun, you get carried away. Don't let it get too complicated, it'll bother ya." 😂
This is so beautiful!!! I actually love the iridescent colors because in reality the hummingbirds do shine. They're also my favorite bird and remind me of gentle memories with my grandmother who had hummingbird feeders and how we were fascinated with their delicate beauty. God bless you sweet lady and thank you again!
Thank you so much, Regina! You’re exactly right about hummingbirds, having a beautiful, iridescent quality. They are really miraculous in their design, beauty and ability to fly unlike anything man could ever make. Thanks so much for your comment, sweetheart. It blessed me.
How on earth can anybody think iridescent pastels are tacky? lol That is cray-cray. I wish I had thought of using them on my hummingbird paintings. I'll try it now. Thank you for this video, Susan. I loved watching you do it and I also am enjoying panpastels, seeing they can be used in so many awesome ways. I love them for getting details on florals too. I have also tried them as background/underpainting on canvas paper that comes in pad form. I didn't think they would work on that well, but it really did. I have tried using the pans on unsanded paper without any success though, so I look forward to seeing you do that. I also have that brown paper on a roll that you mentioned about 2 years ago, but haven't been able to get any of my pastels to cling to that either. If you have a video on that, I'd love to see it. God bless and happy new year! Your painting turned out amazing. PS: I struggle with the bird's feet too. lol So hard to get them just right.
I'm so glad you found these. Clairefortaine paper Pastelmat is fantastic and you can almost rinse it clean if you don't like it. Works with waterbased as well. and Pan Pastel can be used with water too. Thank you so much!
Lovely painting Susan, thank you for sharing all of your ideas and techniques! I have the iridescent sticks from Schminke and some metallic sticks from Jerry’s in gold, silver, copper, etc. I have been so I’ll and once I recover I need to decide if I want to continue to work with pastels or get going on the oil painting I have spent money getting ready to go! Thank you for sharing this lovely painting with us all! Please take care and have yourself a lovely day!
Pretty painting Susan. Love all of your work. I've never tried pan pastels and probably won't ever. I actually like the feel of the sticks and making the Mark's with my hand, not a tool.
I actually prefer the feel of stick pastels myself. I was gifted, a lot of Pan pastels, and it’s been fun learning how to use them. I really do like them for backgrounds.
I just finished a foggy forest with an elk silhouette painting. I struggled back and forth with my muted/softened background and my focal point. I liked yours better with a much more soft muted background. I love the sparkle! ✨️
Oh so fun! I just got a set of the Mount Vision dark iridescent pastels from Dakota pastels, and 2 small sets of blue and red half sticks from Unisom, along with the paper and board sampler packs. I'm in awe with the sets, plus got the Richeson landscape set. I'm in heaven with these products.
Hi Monet, I love the hummingbird and iridescent/metallic lover here. I have metallic watercolors and now I bought the oil pastels irridescent which are finally on sale. When I find a good sale for iridescent soft pastels I will buy them. I swatch the Schmincke soft pastels and OMG, they are amazing! I got them at Jacksons Art on sale.
Hi, Susan, I enjoy every piece of your tutorials and have learned a lot. The way you CREATE an artwork from a rather plain photo is amazing and inspiring. As a beginner, my problem is COPYING, not CREATE. LOL! You showed me how to use a reference photo, but not 'caged' by photos. Thank you 😂😊
Wonderful! I love hearing that you are striving to create rather than copy. You can do it sweetheart, and just keep painting, learning, and having fun!
I use the applicators to smooth stick and pencil pastels. The benefit is that it works the pastel into Ingres paper whereas ofter using my fingers removes the pastel from the paper. you can also rub the applicators against stick pastels, in a similar manner to using a wet brush against watercolour pencils, and then apply to the painting. Thus you can have as many colours as you have stick pastels!
UK New sub Thank you for sharing xxx I am looking to buy panpastels 20 pure set. I and a crafty one .I needle felt , Learining to draw and have a Cricut Maker. I love your Art work
Awesome @bethmegansmith4642, I appreciate that so much! If you haven't already come join us on my Patreon page! I'd love to see what you create!!! www.patreon.com/susanjenkins
Well my purse is a little lighter! 😱 thinking I got everything. I have a question: do I need to always start on Patreon to get the details? There's so much to look through! Sure there must be a shortcut I haven't discovered.
There is so much free content on my Monet café, UA-cam channel that you don’t necessarily need to become a patron, but there are some more in-depth lessons and videos that I share that are not on the UA-cam channel. Also, the Artists in my group just have a good time sharing with each other as well.☺️❤️☺️
Hi Susan, I just found you yesterday - I haven't really worked with pastels much at all - more acrylic and watercolor, and more abstract stuff - and a hobbyist, not a professional. I'm interested in using PanPastels instead of soft & hard pastels.I have a few of those, though, and some pastel pencils. How many of your Patreo lessons use the Pan form? And also, do you think you can achieve similar results with Pan as you can the soft/hard pastels? Or do they really do different things? Thank you!
Hi there, I'm glad you found my channel. I don't have that many lessons using Pan pastels on my Patreon page… Maybe 15 or less. And I do love pen pastels but I can't quite get the same results as I can with stick form Pastels. I can get more vibrant strokes, and Mark making when I us stick Pastels. But I do like using both.
Do mount vision irredentists have more sparkle than other pastels? This painting is very sweet. I love the soft background. The flowers and bird bring back memories of the garden I once had. Thank you. Your channel is a blessing in many lives. ❤️
I love that my painting brought back a beautiful memory, Rosalie. I’ve only had one of the brand of iridescent pastels… I can’t remember which brand it is, but the Mount Vision Pastels do seem to sparkle a tad more.
Hi Sylvia, I never use fixative to spray at the end of a painting because it always darkens the final piece. I will sometimes spray fixative during the painting process if I want to darken an area or get a little bit more texture to add an additional layer. To keep my paintings safe. I keep them in clear plastic bags with a piece of foam core board cut for support. I get my clearbags from www.clearbags.com.
I really enjoyed this tutorial. It boosted my confidence when you talked about changes you would have made. I really like the pan pastel idea. It might help as a beginner....maybe. I'm technologically challenged and my Facebook went into limbo. I don't even know my password it's such an old page. How do you view patreon? I have to find a kid in the neighborhood to help me out! Lol.
Ha ha Mary, I know of many people who grab a grandchild or younger person to help with today’s technology. To become a patron of mine you just have to visit the website and sign up. It’s five dollars a month and you can cancel at any time. Also, you will get email alerts anytime I post new content. There’s still always plenty of contact here on Monet café however. Keep having fun sweetheart.
Thank you for your sharing 😊 what’s the tool you use at 17:30 for foreground flowers? Iridescent touches are cool… the issue I think is to find the best proportion so that they might lift up the art work.
Hi Pat, thanks for your comment. And here is a link for the tool I used that you mentioned. www.dickblick.com/items/panpastel-sofft-tools-applicator-with-replacement-head-1-applicator-4-heads/

I use my Panpastels in almost every pastel painting I do now days. I love them! This hummingbird painting is gorgeous Susan.

Thank you SO much! Bought Pan Pastels and then didn’t have a clue!!😊
So nice to see this painting come to life!
Love some sparkle in life. This is beautiful.
I definitely think the iridescence has its place. It is a good addition . 😊

Wonderful painting. Haven't painted in over a year. this has really inspired me to get back into it
Wonderful!! You can do it!
I’m intrigued that you find colourfix to be smooth. It seems gritty to me. There is a smooth version I like better.
I think it’s because I’m comparing it to you UArt sanded paper or perhaps Fisher 400. Some of the colourfix sheets are smoother than others as well.

BEAUTIFUL PAINTING!! WHAT IS THE TOOL YOU ARE USING at 16:23 minutes? Its a wooden stick with a sponge of some sort, and where do I get it? Thank you!
It's an applicator made by Pan Pastels. Here is a link: shrsl.com/4o5zu
