Let’s not forget about the G1X Mk3. Used it for landscapes for the last 5 years and the image quality is comparable to the R8/R7 for general landscape photography and outdoor portraits. It also costs half as much as an R8 with L series glass, and is half the size / weight. Plus it’s weather sealed.

The double D’S dainty and delicate 😂😂😂 . I wouldn’t mind the 8 to do landscape with . Think it would also make a great back up camera . Great vid bro .

In this instance I wished I had your R6 so I could at least keep shooting!

I think you are over-emphasizing the build of the R8. As long as you're not pounding nails with it, it will hold up just fine. Are the more expensive cameras built stronger? Sure. But there's no need to worry about the build on the R8. And yes, I have shot with one. As far as the buttons quitting goes, that seems like more of a fluke than a flaw. In general, if you can stand to be out in the weather so can your camera. But, as they say in Peru, caca does occasionally pasa.

I only have my experiences to go on, but I agree with reasonable precautions it can be a powerful tool and I’ve enjoyed using it.

I enjoyed the video, and your experience even if it is far different than mine. I have not encountered any issue with my r8, even with non-weather sealed lenses. It's hard to tell in the video, and maybe I missed it, but it appears you are using an ef to rf adapter. I know depending on the brand those aren't weather sealed and have some gaps. There is also the chance you just got a dud. Still, it certainly didn't seem to be raining enough to explain 1 button going, not a great look for canon. Thanks for the video.

Your videos have helped a lot in my consideration of replacing my R with an R8 for landscape photography. I think I holdout longer for an R6 mark something, or a great sale. Thank you

Glad it helped, I agree there’s nothing compelling for landscapers to switch to at the EOS R price point, and we are eager for something comparable with more versatile tech.

Hey Matt! Just watched a video from another photographer who compared the R8 and R7. She was of the opinion the R8 was meant for videography. I need to get down to Hocking Hills. I live two and half hours away. When can we see the photos you took?

Yeah it’s good to take different perspectives, for me the R7 is a go-to for video and I don’t think I’d like the R8 for that at all 😂 you can catch the photos at the end of the video and in the quality comparison I just published, cheers!

I'm not trying to troll here. Just caught up in the moment. I've been earnestly doing photography for about three years now. I use a Canon 5Ds R. Takes great images but is a heavy camera.

Wich Camera did you use for record this video? Really looks so bad with no focus and Chromaric aberration.

Glad you asked, had LOTS of trouble with the video capture on this production. Most of the footage came from the Canon R7 though the CA was mostly attributed to the EF 50mm f/1.8, myself stepping in and out of the focal plane while manually focused, and over scaling footage that was already out of focus, also a number of problems with the auto white balance and clipped audio-your basic single-operator-winging-it-in-the-woods kinda stuff; I don’t fault the camera for very much of it.

Good information and I just subscribed. You did seem apologetic for the R8 failing in rain. How long had you been shooting? Do you have an idea as to where the water entered? Also you mentioned it might not work for the occasional storm. You weren’t in a storm. What was the level of rain or waterfall splash that shut down the R8? I have the R8 and will plan some way to counter wet conditions thanks to your video. Thank you, and tell it like it is, not what Canon execs want to hear.😊

Thanks for the sub, Alton! The buttons that stopped working were on the top right rear of the camera (AF ON and magnification buttons), so I suspect some moisture ingress through the buttons. Always a good idea to keep it covered regardless, I just didn't have cell service or eyes on the skies to note the sudden change in weather. The rain was not extreme, so the camera must have been hit in just the right spot.

I have never allowed my gear to get soaked by rain. Even if they are weather sealed. I use covers if I have to photograph in the rain. Any weatherproof camera becomes less weatherproof with age so…I just don’t have that level of trust.

They make plastic covers for cameras.

Well, a Canon 6d from 2012 i have does that and even much more, so nothing special

It would have also been easy to use just a little bit of rain protection. When I'm going out somewhere and there's a chance of rain I bring a light raincoat for myself and a cover to protect my thousands of dollars worth of camera and lenses. Just seems like common sense to me.

      I’m sorry, I watch UA-cam videos as a distraction so I thought maybe I was being helpful 😂 😉
