Canon EOS R8 For Bird Photography? The Good, Bad, & Reasons Why I'm Sending it Back.

- In this video, I'll share my opinions about the Canon EOS R8 as a camera for bird photography. More specifically, I'll talk about the things I like and dislike, as well as tell you why I'm reluctantly sending it back. I'll also share a bunch of photos (and a video clip) that I've taken with this camera too.

I'm going to go with the R8. All of the good features sound fantastic. Aftermarket batteries are cheap and easy to get. A battery extension grip will make it fit my hand better. I use front button focusing so I don't care about the AF on button. When I tap & Feather the shutter I have no problems with the buffer on the R7 shooting C-raw and I expect the R8 will be the same.
I really liked this camera too, but the overheating was what made it unusable for what I do. Plus that AF-On button in the grip area:-( Hopefully, you will not have a problem with this--please let me know if you do:-) The R6 mark ii is absolutely amazing! Editing a how to guide on that as we speak, and I have nothing to complain about with that one.
Grip extenders are available for all of these cameras and I'll get one for the R8 if I need it. Tapping and feathering the shutter still gives you dozens of shots in bursts without having to wait on the buffer. You can use part of the rear screen as a joystick also. I've been shooting with the R7 daily for months hi+ bursts and pre-captures and neve have to wait on the buffer unless Ive taken a pre-capture. I've still gotten often over 40 shots in a row of a bird in fight.
I’m in Arizona, the temperatures will be over 110 soon for the summer. Thanks for talking about overheating.
Great review! Mine is on the way. I appreciate you mentioned body size and buttons layout, interesting to see how others perceive it. I upgraded from an RP and didn't get the 6dmark2 because I prefer the smaller body, that's why R8 was a no brainer for me.
I'm glad the review helped you! Please let us know if you have any trouble with it overheat. Hopefully, in these new R8s, they found a way to fix that problem. It's a huge upgrade from the RP--I bet you're going to be really happy with it:-)
Solutions to some of the problems:
1. Battery - turn Airplane mode on AND turn off all Digital Lens corrections if you’re shouting RAW, these use up power and only affect the joeg previews on the back of the camera
2. Buffer - If you turn off DLO (Digital Lens Optimisation) you wing have to wait for the buffer to empty before you can shoot again
Not much you can do for the button placement or overheating though 🤪
Although it will only really overheat doing video in 4k 60p 🤷♀️
Thank you for your videos They have been most helpful.
The R8 definitely has an overheating problem. This morning it was 80 degrees and sunny. I was shooting a softball game. The camera overheated and shut down after 17 photos in less than an hour ( no video). Also the newly charged canon battery half discharged in that hour.
That is absolutely horrendous
Your first world problems make me chuckle , I think the camera is swell I love my R8
I think at least some of your problems with the R8 might be solved with a battery grip. The size of the body and positioning of the button that is causing you trouble might seem different, and a battery grip will give you twice the battery supply at a time. I have only been playing for a short time with my R8, haven't encountered overheating in the admittedly unchallenging circumstances it has been exposed to so far, but have noticed the battery warms up as it discharges. Presumably that heat would not contribute to overheating the camera if the batteries were in a grip. (Other suggestions for preventing overheating also apply of course). As it is the battery that drives focusing and stabilization in the lens, it's possible that big lenses will deplete batteries faster as well.
Did you use the 2x and 4x digital zoom when taking pics? I was getting buyers remorse but falling in love with it. Video in 4k 30 not 60 is ok for my needs. I went to the Alamo with the RF 16mm, 28mm and the 35mm and loved the pictures that I took. I think of this camera for the family not as a backup to the R6 II for weddings. Videos do overheat in warmer weather, like mine which is in Texas. I like it. Cheers!
I did try both of those and the picture quality was terrible. I think the digital zoom is more of a marketing thing, for it's just not usable in the real world:-)
@@lets_go_birding9096 So the question is is it cropping to HD? I wanted to know because of not owning a teleconverter and if the zoom feature was an alternative. Cheers!
The digital zoom is definitely NOT a replacement for a teleconverter. Teleconverter images are way way better for stills and movies. In movie mode, there is crop that you can apply which will zoom in without much loss (if any) of picture quality.
I think canon will eventually address the overheating with firmware like they did the R5 just extending the shutdown temp
Deeply appreciate your candid thoughts on this camera especially so because other youtubers always extol the benefits with no shortcomings
I have the R6 mk2 a near perfect camera albeit more expensive
Nice review. I'm starting my adventure with photographing birds, but my photos are blurry. Is it best to set Auto in the Case 1-4 settings?
Good for you! Birding is, although challenging, so much fun. I would leave it in auto for your case setting--That's what mine is in 98% of the time. It does a great job.
@@lets_go_birding9096 Thank you
say, did you use uhs-ii and it still was overheating?
Yes! Ones with 300mb/s write speeds.
@@lets_go_birding9096 thank you
All looks good to me for a £1000 less than the R6 ii! It rarely gets hot for long in the UK and that would mean good light so I would use my R7if it was. The AF on button looks very similar to the R7 to me but I could easily get 3rd part battery grip which also doubles the battery life. Button positions don't bother me much, I just re-learn them. It pretty much solves all my negative issues with the R7 like rolling shutter, poor AF tracking, poor low light performance. So between two £1300 cameras I have it all for my level. All I need now is for Canon to open up to 3rf party lenses for AF and I will be very happy.
Very thoughtful review, thank you. Did you notice overheating with the screen flipped out horizontally? Thinking about this camera for astrophotography. I don’t need or use IBIS, I don’t hand hold it (on a tracking mount) and would most likely be using a dummy battery. Ultimately I like the sensor performance and at $1,500 it may (that’s a big May) be a decent option.
My pleasure! No, the screen was against the body when it over heated. Would think this may be usable for astrophotography: no hot sun to overheat it. However, even at night, not sure how long it would last in 4k 60p before overheating??? I've seen reports of it only lasting 30 minutes???
@@lets_go_birding9096 Luckily I never shoot video. Stacked and tracked, long exposure stills only.
@@ronrotunno2901 did you buy the r8? I shoot street, landscape, portraits, sports and astro as well. If you bought it, i'd like to hear your experiences
@@emirhantemel9912 Hi, no I ended up purchasing the R5.
Carrying 4 extra batteries on an outing is also a dealbreaker for me. Thanks for your candid opinion
Agreed! The R10, which also used these tiny LP-E17 batteries, has much greater battery life... but that one has it's problems too. Currently, unless you have an extra $5500 laying around for the R3, then it's the R6 m2 all the way. If not that one, then the $1000 cheaper R7-a very close second which give you great reach.
@@lets_go_birding9096 Or $75 for a battery grip I guess 🙂
All the bad things mentioned were known from day one that the camera was out. It has the same body as the RP so almost all the bad physical stuff from the RP was carried over this new body. Overheating is in my opinion the only hidden bad item.
Puoi usare il grip battery .. diventa più grande.. un fotografo famoso ha detto che è indispensabile per questa fotocamera così piccola.. Ciao.
There is no best camera for everyone, unfortunately everyone's hand is different. It's one of the reasons they keep changing the button layout from camera to camera and version to version. Hoping, people will find a camera that's good for them.
Hi! We produce film emulation plug-in and we'd like to offer you a collab. Would you be interested?
If you use CRAW, you double the buffer capacity. Using a 300mb/s card, I'm getting about 100 CRAW images before the buffer fills.
Yes the battery sucks. There are 3rd part battery grips that really help with the camera's handling.
I hear what you say about the back buttons, however, all of the back buttons are re-assignable and i've found a few configurations that I really like.
I think for a travel camera or a 2nd camera body paired with a R6ii, the R8 is an amazing little camera.
agreed!
overheat has been an issue for Canon.
Yes! Even my R5 overheats if it's hot and it's in direct sunlight. The R7, on the other hand, has no problem with overheating in any type of hot weather or even in direct sunlight.
