Should I play The Settlers 2 in 2022?...

- The Settlers is a classic series that has a TON of fans and a new Settlers game is releasing in 2022! Reviews from those playing the new game are... unfortunate... BUT long ago, I started a playthrough of The Settlers 2, one from the series that is beloved. I never finished the game and I'm wondering if I should continue the series in 2022 and actually finish it. It's been a few years though, so today, I'm replaying some missions to relearn the game and to remember what I love... and hate... about The Settlers 2.

Why not just play Settlers 2: 10th anniversary edition?
@@brainloop99 I don't like playing total remakes without knowing what the original is, so I started this playthrough. Now I feel like I should finish this before going to the remake.
Absolutely you should make more settlers II videos
@ger du interesting, I haven't noticed that the rules for the remake were any different from the original whatsoever. I could jump straight from the old one to the remake without changing anything I do.
Settlers 2 is definitely one of my old favorites that I still play from time to time. However, being how old it is, I would recommend to play Settler 2.5, the free "upgrade" that some fans are continuously developing. I tried 10th anniversary edition but the 3D-like graphics just took away the whole feeling of the game. But I highly, higly recommend Settlers 2.5 for a greatly enhanced Settlers 2 experience!
This and Theme Hospital was all I needed for many hours of fun in the 90's
Exactly Same Bro.. Check "Two Point Hospital", it's made by part of the Theme Hospital Team..
@@pierg5257 already got it.
Exactly the same vibe.
Not sure about the next game they are promoting though, about college.
But maybe I will also try it because they already proved to make great games before.
I also spent time in Theme Park besides Theme Hospital but it seems i always fail to get profit😂
Dungeon Keeper
@@Lijst_2030 forgot about that one also very nice. Some screen hours have gone by 😅 many many hours
Hearing the Geologist's "Yepi!" brings a warm joy to my heart!
I absolutely loved this game back in the day 😊 It was the first strategy game I played and I still think back fondly to it now.
I think mission 10 or something it was endless with not enough stone to keep winning with the catapults. 🙂
Bought a Settlers 3 game pack recently: 2004 onward. A very bad move. This is all I really need, again.
mine was Knights and Merchants
This and Command and Conquer 2 where my first games i ever played on our Families first PC. Still love it to death.
OMG the Settlers music at the beginning hit me in the nostalgia I didn't even know I had. Sooooo many hours, o man.
Isn't there a remake S2?
@@joeyhollenberg4055 Yes, I think it's Settlers 2 10th Anniversary.
My nostalgia lies with settlers 3 , The supply chain management, epic story line, cutscenes and difficulty kept me coming back , however I haven’t played it in many many years .
miss that game played it all the time (still have a copy be nothing to play on )
The Settlers IV for me
Good times! I remember playing a demo of this game when I was a kid! Would love to see you go through it again!
This is brilliant, it's like watching myself play the game - I remember all the basics but like you I've definitely forgotten a fair bit. Also your voice is easy to listen to, cheers!
I love the intro.
I like the original settlers 2, we played a lot back then, but for me the first one feel more nostalgic, probably because it was a new experience and never played a game like that before or i dont know. Recently played it again ( I have the history edition from Ubisoft store) and i think it is okay gameplay wise, I definitely prefer the music of the first one and the medieval theme of the game. I would watch a 'Zakh gameplay' of Settlers 1 for sure.
Just recently got back into S2, playing with the RTTR patch, it has some nice quality of life improvements. Finished watching your old playthrough and now your starting again, that's awesome
If only RTTR had the campaign, I'd use that for this playthrough. Glad you're enjoying it!
Love it when you continue your started playthroughs. Go for it, I will watch. ;)
One of my favourite games like ever .
I love how you played it!
You should definitely try Return to the Roots which is basically Settlers 2.5 + extra mesopotamian faction!
I never finished it neither, a true 90’ game hehe
I’m so glad you start it again, I might start it again with you and try to finish it
I was always hopeful for you to continue/finish the Settlers 2 campaign.
Fantastic Settlers game, my personal favourite! After watching HandOfBlood playing it for hours this is a super neat surprise! The BTTR patch is the coolest thing ever to happen to this game and even adds coalburners and the Babylonians!
can't believe someone posted about this game 2 months ago, i remember i had this as a kid and never was able to expand my territory so couldn't even finish the first mission lol
love seeing content about it tho
The game is definitely hard to learn, even reading the help text and manual doesn't really explain things properly and some of it is just wrong haha.
Waiting on this series, I love The Settlers and I have downloaded to playing it again inspired by you
I can remember playing this game at a neighbour's house back in the day and I had no idea what I was doing.
Defence strength not only determines which soldiers will defend an attack, but also which soldiers will occupy your military buildings. If you set defence strength to zero, you can empty your military buildings and the higher ranks will leave. That is a neat trick to train generals in a fortress or watchtower near a warehouse in the interior of your realm. With interior set to 90% your barracks will still only accept one soldier, but the fortress will take 8. This way you can manually send the soldiers back and forth while training them and not wasting any gold coins.
You meant to say not wasting time transporting coins? Not wasting coins?
Not necessarily wasting time transporting coins, as that will be done continuously anyway, but not wasting time waiting for new soldiers to arrive in your 'training building'. And in order to not waste coins, you need to leave its building window open and keep a look out, to swap the soldiers timely.
@@baschdiro8565 You mean coins will keep being spent even if all soldiers in the building are maxed out?
@@thorhelm4055 No, coins will be spent, as long as there is at least one soldier to be promoted. But as you can promote 4 different ranks at once, you want to make sure to be as efficient as possible to save coins.
Well my technique is to unable coins 1 second after military building is completed. I even destroy a road if I see a coin coming out of HQ. Another trick is to open Transport window and place coins to bottom to TRY to avoid this. Then when I reach enemy borders then I build Fortress and there I do allow the coins. So in the end I have low grade soldiers in my interior and high end soldiers in borders.
I love Settlers 2 the most, it's music is something different. I feel so nostalgic when I hear it
Please do continue your series. I started playing Settlers II twice before, most recently a year or so ago, and got stuck on episode 4 (On the High Seas) both times. I hadn't caught on to the necessity of expanding my territory to include the figure of the guy with the boat on the beach in order to open up both the Harbor and the Shipwright for building, so I was stuck trying to take the gate without the island resources. Watching your video showed me how to get unstuck. I'd love to be able to see how you handle the rest of the episodes, with the help of your commenters.
Settlers 2 had ingenious split screen mode. You had to have 2 mice connected, one to COM port and second to some other (PS/2 i think). Of course it's hard to get that working today with usb, but my brother somehow made it work with linux, and we played some nice splitscreen multiplayer. I never got past mission 5 in campaign. First 4 missions introduced new exciting elements, but from mission 5 it was just military grind. My biggest gripe with this game is that everything goes towards military, every resource in resource chain ends up towards gold coins for military training (well maybe apart from stone for catapults).
The 2 mice thing was a dream (is a dream?) for so many games back when I was a kid.
One of my favorites! Please play it more :)
I loved Settlers 2 when I was a kid! My friend and I never went further than chapter 5, but we had a ton of fun playing it! I am so sad that the new Settlers look so crap!! It looked so good a few years back when it was announced...
Awesome, that music is engrained in my memory. This is the best Settlers game, a supply chain management game in essence.
Brilliant game The settler’s is ….. first played it on the Amiga when it first came out spent hours, days & weeks playing on the game …….. Great to see you play a review the game 👍👍TOPMAN
I absolutely loved Settlers 2 back in the day. I played it again twice later :)
Sometimes I try to play this game, for nostalgia's sake. But, when the battle missions begin, I give up. Too many resources are needed, the shortages are frequent, the management is indirect and slow, the battle results seem to be random (I lose high units to inferior enemy units).
I loved Settlers 2 since I've first encountered it around 1996 maybe, and played it many times since then, last time just a couple years ago. And despite believing that it's the best game of the series, I've also never sat through to finish the campaign -_- Although for me it's more like a "feel good" game, I simply enjoy the gameplay and the graphics (yes!). Good to see it got some attention from you too!
Playing Settlers II, while listening to Jurassic Park soundtrack. My Tamagotchi beeps for attention... O' 90s! Why did you leave us! D:
oh man i remember this being my first contact with the Settlers series back in the 90s
Could you try settlers IV too? That is the one I played a lot when I was younger. The dark campaign got real tough after the first few scenarios, I think I gave up before I was even halfway.
I played a bunch of Settlers 1 back in the day. Never did the missions - just played sandbox in 1 and 2 player split screen. Loved to watch my villagers ferrying goods around. Combat was never a strong suit of the series.
I always thought you were supposed to go around the mountain to the north, but I don't think I ever did finish that level. I played this game with a couple friends with a bunch of friends in one overnighter.. that was a fun night.
Dear GZ, is there any possibility for you to play the Settlers 2 sequel? I remember playing the demo of the 3rd game in the franchise and in the end I never saw anything about it, so, because of your videos I got to GOG and bought for $0.72 dollars the game I remember wanting to buy when I was young and ended up for never having purchased. thanks for the videos, it's been a great pleasure to see you play. I would also like to know, if you got to play nival's Rage of mages, it's really cool and quite difficult. A big hug from Brazil.
I just completed the Roman campaign again. Was so Good!
Settlers 2 is flawed gem.
I would love to see a Settlers 4 video in your channel, I've been thinking about learning this game.
after watching the video i remember why i was more into 'Alien Nations' and eventually Pharaoh back then
Would be a fun series where you play (a little bit) of each settlers entry.
That would be helpful so I understand it all better.
Got stuck at Settlers 3 once. Some settlers games are on discount on GOG btw
Oh yes, saved to watch later 🙌👏😍
This isn't idea but if you have a lot of rear area military buildings with left over generals, you can max out the number of soldiers sent to the rear areas. Once some privates have gone to fill up the rear area military buildings (which is a lot of soldiers if you have a lot of territory) then if you change one of the settings that determines if it prefers weaker or stronger soldiers to weakest and turn down the rear areas setting again when the extra soldiers leave all the rear line barracks etc. it should have the generals leave first and a private should stay behind instead. This causes a mess of your soldiers going around trying to fill all the rear line buildings but it's technically possible to free up generals from rear area buildings if you really really need it. This has been useful for me in long drawn out maps when the gold is all used up and a few generals might be super valuable.
man i played settlers 2 gold on my old 386, it was great.. slow but great :)
I just love this game. it was one of my first ones. Unfortunately I was never able to finish one of the missions and couldn't progress, which frustrated me. :/
I'm just here for runaway part when they all flee.
The music reminds me of Daggerfall's OST. Was that just the style back then? Or was it the same composer?
Not the same composer as far as I know. Generally a lot of sound style was the same back then because games were stuck with midi and AdLib for music. They also reused the same sound effects from the few sound packs that were available. It was rare to find a composer that could actually compose midi tracks in a unique way, so once something sounded good many kind of stuck to that.
As someone who played Settlers 2 essentially since its release, I can say: of course. Its an all time classic.
As an alternative, there is "The Settlers 2 - Return to the Roots", a clone of the original game with working online multiplayer.
Widelands is an Open Source alternative, but expanded. You can check those out as well.
I do know of Return to the Roots, listed it in a video 6 years ago haha. Only problem is it doesn't have the campaign.
@GamerZakh
Great gameplay!
Have you ever checked out the "Cultures" series? It very very similar to the settlers, but with vikings, I played it a lot a decade ago when I wasn't aware of the great similarity to the "Settlers" series.
I've heard of it but never played it before. I did kind of see the two series as kind of similar though.
Cultures is a lot more micro-managey, though. It's more about the individual vikings than the interchangeable settlers. And as is often the case, combat is... oh well.
Do you know how to get a versionj with working harbours and ships?
There was a way to get it even after they "patched" it
A new 3 hour "Settlers 2" video? Yes please!
Oh damn, there is a widescreen version and it is only available through ubi...oh damn oh damn. I started replaying this but the gog with dosbox and now I kinda wanna play this version. Seems like I need to get the damn ubistore.
I really really still like the graphics, though. Pretty timeless. Actually my favorite settlers game.
You could also try
Widelands
or the Settlers 2 return to the roots.
Which basically is a completely new engine with mostly the same mechanics but brought up to modern spec.
Needs the original Settlers 2 Files though.
I sometimes play in Settlers 2, and I believe, this is the best settlers ever. All modern versions has lack of economic development, too diversified and has cartoon characters. So, only this game ♥️ is great!
What are you playing this on? I've got the GOG version but it's now as smooth as yours and I get some screen tearing. Also how did you get it widescreen?
This is using the History Collection, but note, cheats don't work in this version.
Oh man, first time me and my brother got this game we could play this for hours.
Wish I could find a version with CD music. GOG doesn't have the files.
Concerning flags on roads. You should always put them and as close as you can. Long routes without flags don't save you transporting time of one item, it takes as much time as if you would break that road into segments with flags (even with dropping and picking up). So once more than one item is transported long routes with no flags become really, really inefficient. So always put your flags, there are no drawbacks, only positives.
One example where you don't bother with flags is roads to mountains for geologists or roads for scouts. And that is because nothing is going to be transported there.
Exactly. Flags don't add any time - you have to walk to the get it, then drop it off - it's the same amount of time travelled, but it does mean more goods being transported at once. If it's something like a fishery, it doesn't make any difference so no point adding extra flags, but for a busy road - you want a LOT of flags.
Yes please continue with more The Settlers 2 content
Where you have the guard house on the mountain.
Replace that guard house with a catapult (that is what I used to do) so they don't have an attack point.
And go the other way.
👌 still liked the battle.
I mean, if you know you don't have to go that way, then you can just ignore them entirely. Don't even build right, just go up directly and head straight for the gate in the north. Don't build anything near or past the swamp and yellow literally can't even interact with you. No need for a catapult or anything, just ignore.
Played this years ago then found it for iPad. By far the best iPad game bar Sid Mieirs pirates
Maybe settlers 3 🤦♂️🤣
Used to play the settlers 2 multiplayer with dial up internet with my best mate at the time. Damn I miss this game. The setters 3 wasn't bad either.. but IMO went downhill from there.
Edit: back in the day I got the settlers 2 gold with simcity 2000 and Civilization 2 in one 3-cd pack. Good times
I am in for a The Settlers II serie: the new Settlers maybe will be a good game, but seems clear that it will be far away from the vibe of the originals.
Love the series, and old installments still look great, but gameplay... I was really over that core design of the infrastructure network with paths and everything. There are so many great builders on PC these days, that thinking about going back to that formula gives me shivers- I guess I had my fill (probably before even Settlers IV came out) and it's just simply so much that can be squeezed out of that idea. It can be executed well, but IMHO it's too limiting and counterintuitive to some positives about modern building strategy games.
Plain chains of productions are also kinda unimaginative but work fine and I'd never held it against the game in general- I still love the entire ANNO series that very much is knee-deep in that eco chains design.
It's unfortunate that new Settlers game is not fantastic. Well, I'm waiting for Frostpunk2 and in the meantime playing bunch of other games- Endzone - A World Apart, Northgard, Timberborn, Surviving the Aftermath and Going Medieval.
You must have a building in war (cross on white flag) for soldiers to move there. Even a storehouse.
Each flag represents a worker in between that carries items between those flags. It is simple.
Doesn't it take time to put down and pick up items?
To explain your problems with military screen at the end of the video:
2nd line (weak / strong defense) is what type of unit rank (private, s. private, sergeant, officer, general) will be prioritised to either go into and garrison a military building (when your soldiers need to populate it) or be left in it (when they are leaving it).
3rd line - fewer / more defenders - basically says: put it on minimum, and only the garrison of the building is defending it. Put it on MAX, and garrisons of close by buildings come to aid.
That's how it works. Now, You wanted to have generals attacking enemies. This is done by default on attack building screen- same, where you chose amount of soldiers attacking. You can only chose either stronger or weaker soldiers to attack, but the game itself decides, who exactly goes - based on how far from enemy building being attacked are your buildings. So, if generals don't go - they are simply too far away.
Ohhh i Never knew that harbor point left of HQ, i always take the middle one
Middle one makes more sense because it would act as a warehouse going east as well.
@@GamerZakh too bad harbours tend to Glitch
You could also play widelands, a free remake which has good support for modern computers.
There are so many versions, remakes, re-releases and remasters of Settlers, I can't tell which one I'm supposed to play.
Seeing this now, it does remind me of the game "Baldies", quite the similar game.
Hello Dude!
You may want to check out Settlers II "RttR" - Return to the Roots. It's a fan project, which lets You play this game in modern resolution, having A LOT of game tweaks improving gameplay experience etc.
None the less, I think that a campaign is better being played on oryginal files (also, RttR does not have campaign working exactly like original, as far as I'm concerned). Anyway - i'll repeat what I told You once before, in your previous series: please don't cheese NPCs! They can't act like they should if You just bomb them with catapults. Try playing campaign without using one. It's possible to do - although harder. Don't use catapults. ;)
I still like playing Settlers 2 to this day and I, in fact, prefer the History Edition. I just like the bigger resolution - even though I have to adjust my screen resolution every time because otherwise everything would just be TOO small. At the moment I try to finish the world campaign, which takes forever because of the size of the maps. Yesterday it took me two hours on the South Asia map to even find the first of two enemies.
I bought the settlers-collection from Uplay a while ago, but was sad to find out that almost all of them crashed or failed to start on win10. Was hoping for a dose of nostalgia :(..
I've bought the same collection, if you mean the History Edition, and it works perfectly on my Desktop PC with W10 as OS. Bought on UPlay.
Im currently playing tenth anniversary.
Mission six!!!
Hell yeah!
28:00 "Everything's fine"
I remember I was playing this in multiplayer has a kid with my sister on the same computer ! Because the game allowed you to plug 2 mice to be able to play split screen !
It was awesome !!! Unfortunately, Settlers 2 is the only game allowing that :( but it marked me.
@ger du Eww joystick for a strategy game? Maaan.... No ! Just no !!!
Settlers 1 and 2 are the only games I remember with that feature, Settlers 3 didn't have it. Battle Island had something similar? Ehh... Well, I never played battle island, just saw it at friend's house once.
@ger du The first real time strategy game was Dune 2 in 1992, back then, the mouse already a thing since a long time and everybody was used to it. The settlers 2 released in 1996. I cannot picture any strategy game, not even Dune 2, with a joystick. Joystick have other use but certainly not RTS where you need to precise an fast.
I agree though that some other games are hell with a mouse and amazing with a joystick.
Ok. Now I must play it myself ehhh.. :)
Yes absoloutly you should play it further. But Settlers 2 was my first game ever and I love it till to day. So I might not be very nutral on this question. ;)
this game got me hooked when i was like 8 yrs old i didnt understand the loving shit outa it but when i was 9 or 10 i was a pro:D when dedicated theres nothing u cant do even if your a child and the game is in english
Love it !!
Love the pixelated art style! I'll have to check this game.
Maybe for future videos lower the game resolution to 720p? the UI will be bigger and more readable, but you can still zoom out the gameplay
Very funny, i want the next chapter
I've so far made videos up to mission 8 out of 10. Should be playing mission 9 soon.
I actually played Settlers II through just a few weeks ago, not just a few missions. All the way to Rome ;)
... and I had no clue about a "speed up" played it at regular speed ... took about the 10 years the narrator was talking about ;)
I did the same thing in one of my AoE 1 playthroughs haha. Never sped it up ever because I didn't know, people complained a lot.
@@GamerZakh Back in the days it was actually expected to have a look at the hard copy game manual... yes, that was a thing. Quite nice actually, background info, nice images, ... It was an age where people still read not only books but also booklets.
@@sagichnicht6748 I was there, 3000 years ago. lol yeah I liked the manuals.
I would like you to finish it by starting over!!!
Are you jump cutting these? I mean eliminating silences, etc.?
Yeah, this game can be super grindy and tedious. For this, I basically cut out half of the footage. A lot of it was mostly tweaking and adjusting or waiting.
Zach, have you tried Cultures series?
I haven't. Back in the day I missed Settlers and Cultures, so they're both new to me.
I just started playing it again. What a fun game. I tried the Settlers III and is not good.
Hi, I recommend you to play Against the Storm. Game as Settlers, Early Access in EPIC. The game has long demo.
The answer is YES! But the 10th anniversary is a huge upgrade from the original 2. 10th Anniversary also has the Vikings expansion with their own campaign which can be played with German voiceover and English text.. Works brilliantly, though! 100% the same game as the original, now just in 3d.
I am very curious about that, if it fixes all the issues I'd be into it.
Microtown is a lot similar to S2 and I really enjoy it.
I have been playing Settler's 2 gold edition since it was released to this day. More fun RTS ever!!!
I'm not convinced the harbor bug exists, or at least it's very rare. It's far more likely Zakh didn't notice or possibly even misunderstood something and jumped the gun on blaming it on a bug. I've played this map over 5 times and have never experienced it (or heard of anyone else having it). Ships are slow, wonky and weird absolutely but they do work.
Maybe, that mission is uploaded unedited here: ua-cam.com/video/DyOhBywnwLA/v-deo.html So you can check to see if I missed something. 1:49:40 in that video is the barracks that never built.
@@GamerZakh When I clicked the link I noticed that I already had that video liked, so I've seen it. :p
I'll check it tomorrow.
@@GamerZakh It looked like it only received one plank for some reason. Ships doing that kind of dumb stuff isn't uncommon. But I couldn't tell if you ever panned the camera back over to check if it finished, sorry. I've built there before with no issues so if it is indeed a bug it is probably rare.
I played the map myself last evening (where did those hours go) and while there were some weird things nothing got stuck. For example I built a quarry and a fishery at one harbor and the quarry finished and began working long before even a single plank showed up to the fishery. But it did eventually.
On keyboard press: s c v (for stats) thunder f11 (for map reveal 😉)
Unfortunately cheats don't work on the History Collection version.
S c v was just for stats not a cheat but good to know no thunder 😉
Make many short roads because they will upgrade quicker
@@GamerZakh Cheat mode is enabled by entering "winter" in the game. But that destroys the fun, do not recommend. Once the cheat mode is on, F7 or F11 (iirc) reveals the map.
About the flags: Sometimes it doesn't matter, but when it does, more flags are always better. Reason: The carrier will always stand in the middle, so when transporting something, it will walk half the way back then forward. But with shorter segments he is ready for the next item faster.
Farms need a HUGE amount of free area for max efficiency. Cut trees and keep foresters very far away from them.
@@DerGully Yeah, but cheats don't work in the History Collection version of the game. Cheats are totally disabled.
@@GamerZakh you could have fun with the catapults against strong enemies it is a great outer defense next to a guard house, so they can build close to you and shoot every military building empty.
This took me back. Thanks for the video. I am developing a game that has production chains like settlers. I will announce it next month! Would you be interested in reviewing?
Yes My Dude!
Yes
I don't get the conclusion -should I play settlers 2 ?
I'm seeing if I still like the game and if people would watch me play the game. So far it seems yes to both.
More Flags is usually more better because it is a bandwidth issue.
One road of 10 units long with one flag at each end means you can
only transport one item at a time from a to b.
If you put in 5 flags, you can now have 5 items moving at the same
time from a to b.
I say that if you enjoy the game enough, you should definitely go back to your old playthrough :) But I'm just some voice on the internet, I have no control over your actions!
