Is The Settlers 2 Anniversary ACTUALLY Better?...

- In the year 1996, The Settlers 2 released. A nostalgic classic and the favourite game of the series for many. I've been playing through the campaign and, as a new player, it's been a confusing and lengthy journey. In some of my more... frustrating moments... I've was informed that there was a remake of the game released for its 10th anniversary. It left behind the pixelated graphics of the mid-90s and embraced a fully 3D style that, mostly, has aged surprisingly well. Many of the bugs and issues of the original game have been fixed. Though not everything is perfect, perhaps this is a better experience compared to the new Settlers game releasing in 2022? Well the new Settlers just got delayed... again... so I'm just guessing it's going to be a 2022 game. Today, I am stepping through the portal of time to 10 years beyond the original Settlers 2 to see if it's reincarnated form is actually better than what it already was. the BIGGEST PROBLEM of this?
you can't actually buy the expansion with the viking campaign if you do not buy a DISC Version.
NONE of the digitally available ones have the viking stuff in it for some fucked up reason . .
about the maps:
you can actually load up or convert the old original maps to this game.
may need to do some tinkering to get the harbours to work...
The follow-up game "Settlers 2 - Awakening of the Cultures" is also really nice if you like this one. I'm not sure if it ever got an international version, though. Might be German only. I'd also like to see you try Settlers 3 and/or 4.
You should really try The Settlers 2: Return to the Roots mod! Its a complete upgrade, featuring many quality of life upgrades, rationalization of resources, new buildings and civilization, hd graphics and multiplayer!
@@AdlerMow Main problem with that is that it doesn't have the campaign. The campaign has be 'coming soon' for 6 years, so I can't use it for a campaign playthrough.
Now we just need a 3rd settlers 2 with the pixel style graphics of the original and the improvements of the anniversary edition
Then you should try The Settlers II: Return to the Roots!
exactly... S2:RTTR solves everything
The anniversary edition is still my favourite game in the entire series. It has definitely stood the test of time:)
It is absolutely gorgeous and the animations are very cute!!!
You see those settlers from Anniversary Edition? They have curved roads. Curved. Roads.
Unfortunately l would have to check later. I hope you had fun with this :)
I love 10th anniversary almost as much as the classic Settlers 2. Both are the best Settlers games.
Great to come back to this classic. I still have it in my boxed Cd collection. Too bad I cannot install it on my current compu. I did rebuy the original Settlers II, after watching some of your play through.
Please keep playing!
Exactly in the same position. Very sad i cannot play it freshly installed from CD. I suppose there are other ways to get it playing again.
@@prlombaard there is. You can buy it through ubisoft.
I just rebought settlersII. Might get the 10th anni as well
Gog has them aswell , they are on sale right now for 75% off, which is $2.49.
One of the truly great games, absolutely love this game/version, still play it often.
I used to play this game when I was a child. I loved this game because I loved to watch these little guys animations and I used hours watching them fight each other or doing other stuff but I was never able to figure it out how to play it properly and always end up stuck with my men ending up producting to many swords until I run out of materials or building half houses because I didn't have the amount enough to finish them without nebtioning that I have problems to maje roads or finding a olace to build stuff and I had no idea how to expand either; I picked up the game again some years ago and replayed it as an adult and I run into the same problems, and ended up doing the same stuff that I did as a kid. This game is not easy for new gamers.
Have a look at Settlers 2 'Return to the roots'. Quite an active community that have fixed most of the bugs, including with the ships!
I'll try check that out once I finish the campaign.
@@GamerZakh they've also added some custom campaign maps and helpful tools like auto destroy building when resource is gone
Things I hate in S2: crazy ships, inexistant logic at warehouse management, and soldiers that get lost (and die) instead of using your roads when you burn your own military buildings. Oh and catapults are overpowered and almost the only logical way of winning the machine.
Thank you for this share, I think I will definitely get in this, the old Settlers game was complicated to me :)
It would be lovley to see you go through the other settlers games. Its interesting to watch you go through the challenges and listen to your input.
A lets play series through this settlers game in particular would be awesome though! :D
About the sun/moon thing, you as a player, isnt supposed to watch up there, therefore it "can" look like crap. As I've learned from developers from other games, certain things are just ment as scenery. And in this case, a on/off thing for lighting. Ahh. Next time I'm playing I'm just gonna think about this.. :p
I love your channel, Zakh. You're one of my top UA-camrs. :)
Thanks! I really appreciate it!
Settlers II from 1997 is one of my favourite games of all time! I've played it for hundreds of hours and I still love it just as much as I did when I was a kid :-D
GamerZakh, please play The Settlers 3 as well! I loved this game, though when I was a child I could only play the demo map which was the tutorial one, but I loved the game and still love it to this day xD
Great content. I'm a big fan of your work. More Zeus please :-)
I remember playing the hell out of the "Settlers 2 Anniversary" demo
I remember playing the hell out of the *actual* Settlers 2 demo CD.
you should try with the vikings expansion, that fixes the coin supply to turned off by default and some other minor tweaks, plus it adds a whole new campain. there is a fan-made english translation floating around.
So cool! I wanted to see it so much!
Zakh vs Settlers - take 2 :)
- so Sparkles are only on the mountains (mine placement areas) and they show that minerals are present under the ground.
- when building farms try to aim roads to lower right. It will go between two potential field places. Additionaly leave two road segment thick buffer around farm, so farmer has some room to grow fields.
- not all the ground is farmable. Grass is ok, but dirt is not. That makes building farms a bit tricky
one more thing.
in S2 10th you can expand millitary buildings. so barracks -> Guard House -> Tower -> Stronghold.
To quick build something and secure position you can build small building and then make it bigger for defensive or offensive.
to expand there's a button next to "evacuate soldiers" on bottom right of millitary building window
We have to have a night time! It's 2006, and a real time day/night cycle in a video game is still capable of producing the "Wow!" factor in people who will play it.
I've the anniversary edition and playing it again after watching your other series. I do miss the original though
I think settlers 2 is unique with those road, it is unlike any other games.
Even settlers 3 and above is not as unique as 2.
It is relaxing but can be really problematic on last 3 campaign. You have to think to solve them
I wish someone make game like settlers 2 with new factions, campaign with all available factions, and new buildings. It will be really cool
Thanks very much for this video! While the original Settlers 2 was my favourite game for years back then, I just learned today there is a remake!
After a quick search, your video convinced me to purchase this right away (there's even a discount on GOG). Thanks again, much appreciated!
P.S. I never felt this appropriate to use an affiliate link before :D
Hey thank you so much! I'm glad I could help you discover it, this one holds up.
There's also Settlers 2 RTTR which adds a fanmade civilization (Babylonians), a freaking CHARCOAL HUT (castle building), tons and tons of interface and quality of life improvements and stepless zooming. It's FANTASTIC!
only at 1:16 at the moment. You should empty all barracks far from the enemy. Also, a full castle (with gold) is the most efficient way to boost your army to generals.
Hi, im not sure if its bug or im doing something wrong. But sometimes water from well cant reach my bakery or brewery. I have plenty in storehouse but my settlers simply refuse deliver it to the destinations. In rare case its also happens with stone to the construction sites.
wow, Settlers 2 is my favorite one, but somehow didnt know about its 3D version
They need to make Settlers 2 30 year anniversary haha
Check out Settlers 2 RTTR! It's incredible!
@@rahmspinat I know, played it 😎 it is great!!!

@@judasthepious1499 There's nothing conceptually bad about ray tracing. Sure, RTX cards are too expensive and not good enough, but by 2046 those problems will probably be solved.
I'm amazed by the level of details, you can even read SPQR ! Funny enough, the type is bigger than the text.
I still play my original Settlers 2 gold edition to this day. Of course on huge created maps haha!
It always gets me when u place a farm almost next to a forrester 🙈 has a high chance a farmspot will be taken out to put a tree down😂
Great that you try those. Funatics made some great games here. "Aufbruch der Kulturen" was even better though.
Did you ever try Funatics own series "Cultures"? Those are great as well. "Northland" should be easily optainable via steam. Oh and Valhalla hills of course!
loving the cultures series not only cause the developers are in my hometown but its a nice settler with a little bit more sims mixed in and so much details so much charme
@@patrickv1080 being part of its community for years was awesome. Would be cool to get something new from those guys and girls. No news though. :(
It looks amazingly well for a 2006 game.
Yeah I was surprised at how good it still looks.
Wanna know what they were transporting that allows them to build a castle straight away!
I am not so sure if I like this version better. Yeah, the graphics are okay and somewhat detailed for the time, but the readability seems much worse. In the original Settlers 2, you immediately recognize buildings just by scrolling past them. Here, not so much.
Super excited seeing you play the other Settler games though!
I did struggle recognising things in this game. Not sure if I need to spend more time with it or it's all too messy once things are built up.
That sun looks like those on old maps. What this about a portal? Isn't it exposed on the minimap?
I have bought the BOX version on first day and missed the the Wikinger Addon release later. Then i saw it in a store and instantly took it too. The orginal S2 with mission cd is still good, nearly perfekt with "!back to the roots". The Remake+ addon is clearly between both. BUT there are 2 big topics: ships and AI, still better as in orignal though. Coin stop as standard with wikinger addon
I would love a new Settlers game or an official map pack, with hard difficulty maps. I love S2 and the way everything works. I liked S7 and the different take on transportation, buildings etc. But S2 has a special place in my heart :) I'm off to german map forums to find maps to challenge me.
I do not remember how the Settlers II was to play, too long ago and the expectations much different than the 10th Anniversary version in 2006 that I played too (16 years ago).
I first realised that happened with Final Fantasy 8. I remember it looking so good but years later I loaded it up and it looked so bad lol
@@GamerZakh Yeah, is like the brain smoothen out the pixels when recall memories. Like reading a book and you create images.
In the old game (the settlers 2), you could also use the archaeologists to find water
Where can we find "Die Siedler: Aufbruch der Kulturen" in English?
Hey check out knights and merchants for another settlers like game. See if you maybe want to make a video on it. It had real time strategy troop controls, and some no base missions (which kicked my ass as a kid)
21:27 LOL
Much better game 10 years later...well I would hope so. Amazingly enough I never played this game back in the day so I will probably check it out now.
how did you not freak out more about military buildings being able to extend xD?
I still hope that you will make a Sims 1 series. Maybe your wife could help you with that series.
i have fond memories of Settlers 2 from when i was a kid, and i think i played this one a little bit. it's essentially the same, but the size of the buildings in 3D make the view feel incredibly narrow, plus i'm not particularily fond of the new designs. Also i quickly got annoyed with the "bubbles" that are emitted from buildings that are in paused. typically the barracks that are set to not recieve coins keep emitting those. and coins should be disabled by default of course but they didn't bother to fix that.
but overall my main "issue" with the original game is how you cannot rotate buildings, which is the one thing that should be absolutely trivial in 3D, and they don't fix that. so overall it's a 3D reskin, which is okay but not particularly interesting.
The Vikings expansion for this game fixed the gold coin issue. There was also a game called The Settlers Rise of Cultures based on the 10th Anniversary. For all these 3D Remakes there are Widescreen Fixes which allow you to zoom out more from the surface. These games were made for 4:3 screens but with support for 16:10 and any other aspect ratio. They didn't forsee that screens were getting wider in the future. Horizontally you could see the same width of the ground, but it cut the image vertically the lower (wider) the screen was.
There is no "too big buildings". There are still the same rules: A farm can sow exact in 2 tiles radius, the catapult has a range of 12 tiles, mines have a mining range of 3 tiles, flags had to be placed two tiles from each other at least, military buildings couldn't be placed in less then 5 tiles from each other, etc.
This applies to:
1) The Settlers 2 (Veni, Vidi, Vici and Gold)
2) The Settlers 2 History Edition
3) The Settlers 2 10th Anniversary (and Vikings Add-On)
4) The Settlers Rise of Cultures
I wonder what is written on the signs pointing to portals. Definitely some greek letters. Looks like they were going for ΠΥΘΊΑ (Pythia) but misspelled?
"We still got bunnies" 😂
Yeah the best game ever. Ever 5 yrars or so i feel the need...... i keep comming back to it. This version is justperfect even though i managed the audio to stutter a bit. But man... to think i played thus in 512kb at 7 mhz on my amiga 500. The originsl was programmed so wel. Like running it on an arduino lol and dude you rembered the hit keys thats also awsome
Is there aways to convert Settlers II levels to work on Settlers 2 Anniversay? That would be awesome.

I'm thinking, maybe the sun was drowed big to have a better texture but then there was supposed to reduce the radious of it and they forgotten to do it... I don't know...
That could be it, I'd love to be able to ask the devs why it's like that.

Game devs just don't know what the sun looks like, they never see it
For youre security you are not allowed to cut that tree
I belong to the less than 1% that got introduced to the settlers through the version of settlers 2 on the Nintendo DS.
That does sound rare! I didn't even know settlers was ported to the DS.
Yeah. The Roman world conquest was also impossible to play. On the first map of Italy there was no gold in the entire mountain chain.
It was a different map that is smaller and different from the PC version.
Curved roads? What kind of witchcraft is that?
I don't know if you know it but you can try Widelands. It's like Settlers II with more substance and is free.
I hadn't heard of Widelands, I'll look it up.
I don't know about not any effort being put into a bad looking asset to be honest.
As a software developer I know damn well that quite often especially at the end of the development cycle before release you cannot really get a hold of any artists or designers since both are involved in the early stages of the product development. Now imagine right before the deadline you discover some asset missing. What do you do? Create it yourself. And as one might expect art skills of a software developer are unlikely to be as good as a professional artist hence a shitty looking asset landing in the end game.
Another reasons might be the involvement of a beginner artists or someone new to it, who is not given any time (sort of the question "When is it supposed to be done?" and respective answer "Yesterday"), or just too much work to be done and something being left in a very early stage (placeholder sprite).
Yeah that's exactly what I meant. That's why I said it was an afterthought, meaning they realised it last minute and I said maybe just some intern or some random person had to make something quick. I just found it funny because ironically the sun would've looked better with less effort. They drew a sun manually with a brush, freehand with a mouse, with multiple colours and added a zoom blur to the edges. A simple circle with a glow would've taken less time and look better. For example, I made this in literally 1 minute after reading your comment: cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/944910297255280640/958664425185886208/Sun.png
I do very well know that programmers don't have the artistic sense to do that though, I studied design but my computer science friends... when they made websites they sure looked raw. You'll never see so much RGB haha. I know how things can go wrong in development though, it's just usually you see things like this in 90s games before there were clearer standards of procedure and creation in game dev. 2006 had its jank of course, it's just with the rest of game seeming so polished it was so jarring this happened. I mean, the moon looks fine, so they had time to grab a royalty free moon image or something.
I'm not even sure why they needed to add in a moon and sun too. If there simply wasn't a moon and sun, and just the sky/lighting changed, it would be fine. Even in free camera mode it's hard to find the moon or sun, so it's not like it's important for them to be there. But maybe that would explain how it happened, it was a placeholder and no one ever saw it so it just got forgotten.
If they couldn't draw a half decent sun, they could have simply removed the sun and the moon and the sky would look a lot better. I don't buy the idea that it's the best someone could do.
My guess as to what actually happened is that the placeholder was deliberately bad so that it would be noticed before it ended up in the final product, but no-one noticed because no-one looked up. This would also be why it's oversized, to increase the chance of someone seeing it.
It's a pity they didn't patch it.
Yes
Should check out Settlers 4 sometime as well! Its available at gog
Settlers 4 unfortunately had an issue with a patch which increased difficulty significantly even at easier difficulties causing enemies to spawn troops much faster and in larger quantities than they other wise would making the campaign unfun

I have easily 150 hours in just this version of Settlers 2 and I have NEVER seen the sun, much less the moon... :D

I'm afraid the Settlers 2022 will be postponed further or even rightly cancelled. I don't see much demand for the genre, but I will still hope. I grew up with Settlers series, it's what formed my taste in gaming.
It being so delayed has really messed up its potential. Originally, the History Collection was releasing for the anniversary and the new game supposed to release soon after. Now there isn't much hype.
I played the beta, and the game was crap. It was nothing like Settlers. They endeavored to innovate, but they just destroyed it.
@@marceelino and what really sucks is that they didn't innovate either. The game is literally just northgard except even LESS original.
Out of all the settlers games, I did like the concept from settlers I, this was back on the Amiga A600, only issue was the grid lock of stock clogging up the roads, unfortunately never finished the game from the initial first game :(. That being that, really enjoyed S2 played many hrs and completed many times. S3 lol this game was a joke, returned the game back to store after a few hrs of playing. S4 was different did enjoy it somewhat and completed it. Got the anniversary edition, loved this game as similar to S2, played a few times but not as much as 2 :(. All the others to date (2023) are trash and crap, I wish a remake of 1,2 and 4
This is, by far, the cutest animation of all "The Settlers" series! I totally love it! As an experience Settlers fan, I managed to finish this in under 3 days! I guess that is a record, right? 😂🤣😂🤣😂

Great game, loved playing it. Even made a beginner's guide for it on Steam. It has a veeeeeery long campaign though 😅
While I do think that the anniversary edition is preferable due to all the fixes and improvements, the original was better story-wise IMO. Then again, I don't really play the game for the story, so i mostly skip it these days.
It's not a real anniversary/remake. It doesn't have the vikings or the world conquest. So 30% of the game is missing. And I, a Scandinavian and history nerd, is very disappointed by this.
There are 2 expansions(standalone) one being vikings. However they are german only. While there are some fan translations out there the base expansion games are a pain in the but to get a hold off legally.

best game ever
Wait wait wait, your intro sounds as if you play the Settlers 2 to prepare for the new Settlers game or to get the REAL settlers feel?.
I initially wanted to check out The Settlers series anyway because I never played it. The new game gave me a good reason to play it on the channel, so I started the playthrough in 2019. I got frustrated with the game and the new one got delayed indefinitely, so I paused it. Returned to the playthrough last week and I kind of want to know which Settlers game would be my favourite but I've only ever played 2, so thought I should check out the Anniversary edition then maybe 3 and 4? Then at that point, I can play the new Settlers game and judge it properly, knowing how it fits with the favourites from the series.
@@GamerZakh The new Settlers game is (or at least as in the beta) a joke. Neither a "real" settlers game nor a real building game. Also not a good RTS.
Settlers 3 and 4 are considered the best games of the series and I tend to agree. Sadly neither of them got a remake. Settlers 5 was a weird game. Settlers 6 was mediocre to okay. Settlers 7 was a different take. Not bad. but also not a burner.
@@ShadowDragon1848 Yeah I've heard the new one is terrible, so to make sure I can judge it properly I want to know what the series was like before it. Whenever the new one finally releases, then I can really see what's worse specifically.
@@GamerZakh Yeah probably a good idea. But I think if you only played Settlers 2 you can already see what they did to this beloved franchise. Turned down the building part to make it really rudimentary and combined that with a rudimentary, very slow RTS.
Never played this. 3D games from this era look flimsy I dont like em. Oh and the fact that stargate is highlighted in map from the beggining. WTF? Where is the exploration fun now? Makes no sense for me.

Your name doesn't check out. You're just judgemental, which isn't very useful.
Downvoited for endless harping on someone's tiny piece of art. It doesn't even look that bad. I think he's a jerk sometimes.
It's just a joke, myself as a designer who has worked in the games industry, I'm just teasing. Feel free to downvote though, it just makes the video more popular. Endless though? Haha exagerration makes it look like you're looking for something to 'catch' me on, which is a jerky thing for you to do.
