    Well everyone...its finally HERE! Join me as we delve into the nitty gritty of what made Sonic Adventure's Soundtrack SO LEGENDARY! This video is going to be going deep into the music development, musical influences, cultural influences, Autodemo differences, music prototypes, composers thought processes, and behind-the-scenes work to make this soundtrack truly one above the rest! I tried to make this as much of a love letter as I could to the OST and have been planning and working on this since before I even started my channel! I really hope you guys enjoy the video and please let me know what you think! With that being said...I present to you...The Music Development of Sonic Adventure: A Soundtrack with Attitude.

    Feels like the team had a great chemistry! Seems like Senoue was the driving force behind the more exciting, rock-ier tracks while Tokoi brought the more elaborate jazzy/folk-y elements and Kumatani added the more beautiful, atmospheric stuff. Feels like they all supported each others' strengths and it shows on what I believe is one of the most consistently outstanding game soundtracks ever!
    Personal favourites are "Welcome to Station Square", "Pleasure Castle", "Be Cool Be Wild and Be Groovy" and "Mystic Ruins"!
    I think you did a great job at presenting all the info and your analysis/opinion in a pleasant and relaxing way, about as good as a retrospective can get for nostalgic fans like me! :D

  • @Harrinsain
    @Harrinsain 3 роки тому +9

    The second I heard Sand Hill for the first time, I instantly recognized Tokoi as the composer because it sounds like something straight out of Zero Gravity (my favourite OST in the series), which Tokoi did a lot of work on. Particularly The Core, the final boss theme is probably the closest parallel to Sand Hill.

    • @Eldarin
      @Eldarin  3 роки тому +3

      Hey Harrinsan, thanks for watching the video! I haven't really played much of Zero Gravity myself but that's super awesome some of the tracks resemble some of SA1s. Tokoi is a genius for sure, so I am pumped to check that soundtrack out!

    I didn't expect such a long video! It's very informative. The music of SA1 is very nostalgic for me even though I played it for the first time half a year ago (and yes, I feel more nostalgic for SA1 than SA2). Welcome to Station Square, all of Casinopolis, Mechanical Resonance, Run Through the Speed Highway, Egg Carrier - A Song That Keeps Us On The Move & Tornado Scramble are just some of my favourites.
    Also by the way, Masaru Setsumaru composed one song for 3D Blast Genesis and that being The Final Fight (which sounds very pleasant and chill for a final boss music) so I'm not surprised that he made such a banger out of Sky Chase.

    • @Eldarin
      @Eldarin  3 роки тому

      Hey BWF6! I really love to hear you found the video informative. I did not know that about Setsumaru's other contributions like with 3D Blast so that's pretty neat that him and Senoue worked together before SA1's ost! Thank you for watching :)))

      @@Eldarin most definitely they had a vision and went with it! I always thought it was interesting that SA1 music was made more for the levels and in SA2 they styled it more for the characters! While this isn't my favorite game or even favorite Sonic game, this is my favorite gaming soundtrack of all time, for so many reasons. The masterful arrangement of every single track, which are of much higher quality than contemporary soundtracks of the time, the breadth of genres covered, the variety of emotions conveyed, and more than anything Jun Senoue's guitar work, which inspired me to play guitar and even helped me land roles in Sonic fan-games, like Sonic Melponterations and Time Twisted.. I owe a ton to this game's soundtrack, and your video absolutely did it justice.

    • @Eldarin
      @Eldarin  2 роки тому

      Amen to that!! I really appreciate you watching and thinking my video did justice to the OST, it means a lot! I love this game and ((especially its sequels OST)) so much and wanted to help share why these soundtracks are so awesome the work that is unfortunately overlooked most of the time from the composers. Also, I recently played Time Twisted as my friend did a review of it and that is such a small world that you worked on TTs OST. That OST is phenomenal!!! I’ll have to check out Melponterations now also!

    Awesome job! The intro was pretty funny with the sped up voices. I could be here typing all day if I were to give my thoughts on every track. “Welcome to Station Square” did a good job of conveying “a day in the life” at the start of the game and made the city feel like a safe haven, which made it all the more impactful when Eggman attacks with the Egg Walker at the end of Tails’ campaign and when Chaos destroys it at the end of the final campaign. The mystic ruins theme gives me the feeling like the jungles are inhabited with indigenous people with the chanting, drum beats, and flute sounds. I’ve never played Sonic 3D blast, but I did know about them being the basis for tracks like “The Air”; though I found that out long after playing SA1 for the first time and I never would have guessed since that’s just how versatile Sonic music can be. I often catch myself humming tracks like “Run Through Speed Highway” and “Mechanical Resonance” while I’m at work. My brother recently got all the tracks on CD so we can play them in my family’s car, and it feels so right to listen to them for a road trip. I can’t really say there’s a lot of other SA1 topics that need videos other than maybe the level design and environments like you did for SA2, so I’m good with a hiatus on that for a while.

    Mystic Ruins is my absolute fav map theme. It lives up to the name and it's so relaxing. No wonder it's one of the few 30min extended game osts that I listened all 30mins through.
    For level theme... I really like Speed Highway. It has such an adrenaline feel to it in the first section, and it fits the stage really well. I'm always singing along when I play through it. At Dawn is also so feaceful and beautiful, since now the whole stage has a different build. It is Speed Highway, but now more closed and exploration-based, which fits the song.
    Red Hot Skull is also a great song for Red Mountain. It is a rock-song with a really creepy and intense vibe to it. Intense because of the lava and creepy because of all the mysterious and morbid stuff there, like those prisoner guys.
    Overall, Sonic Adventure's ost is a masterpiece, and no doubt takes a place in my top Sonic games with the best ost, along with CD, Colors and Generations, even when the latter is just remixes.

    This was such a well made video! Your skills are seriously improving and I think you bring such a good passion and input on Sonic discussions.
    I’m glad you gave so much love to Kumatani Fumie. I believe I may have commented on this on another video, but I adore Kumatani. I feel her music is incredible because it always seems to resonate with emotion. The Egg Carrier theme is one of my absolute favorite songs from the game. It just has so much character and emotion behind it!
    The whole soundtrack is incredible and I really do feel Jun Senoue is a genius! Sonic games have better soundtracks when a group of composers work on the games.
    One interesting thing about Emerald Coast is that Jun wrote that song with lyrics. Look up “Jun Senoue Ready! Emerald Coast.” It’s this amazing vocal track that feels so lovely and emotional.

    Windy Valley sounds calm then intense and then Dynamic, Casinopolis sounds like a casino, with the pinball tracks sounding dynamic even being kicked out,Speed Highway sounds what the name of the level was even the part at Dawn,My favorite track has to be all of Emerald Coast A rocking beach vibe, and Bigs part being calm and relaxing to fit the levels.

    Sonic Adventure is easily one of my favorite Sonic games. Funny enough, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and Sonic CD were the two games I never got to play as a little kid, so I had nicknamed them for the forbidden 3… luckily when I got to my High School years they PS3 allowed me to FINALLY play the Adventure games and CD came out on mobile, and now what was once the ‘Forbidden 3’ became some of my favorite games ever. All this to say… Sonic Adventure and it’s OST to me, had always seemed like this mythical gift from Sega that when I finally got to experience it, made me love it instantly, and I was happy to hear you go into the details behind this OST as a result. One cool thing I noticed recently when I got around to watching some of the Sonic Boom show, was that at least one early episode uses a truncated and slowed-down remix of "Red Barrage Area" for a montage scene. I think it had to do with Orbot and Cubot cleaning out Eggman's lair.
    I haven't finished the show so I don't know if it ever gets used again or if they remixed more SA tracks for it.

    I can't believe you never heard of Sonic Eraser. It was one of the strangest Sonic games I've ever played.
    Anywho, it's cool to once again, hear these songs I remember hearing over and over again during my childhood in retrospect to the creators. I knew a lot about 3D blast holding many of the groundwork for the songs, but I didn't know about the other music they used as inspiration. It's cool to see the clash between the music I picked up later in my life, compared to the massive amount of SA1 I played as a child.
    Funny tho that The Police was an inspiration. They are a band I consistently mock for not liking, but they ended up inspiring one of my favorite songs. I loved hearing that ABBA had some inspiration, as I love ABBA, and *At Dawn* is another track I love.

      @@Eldarin who knows, but then again who knows with most of the changes 4kids made to Sonic X. It was the original Japanese version I saw and hearing the changes they made, from minor to major, to the point where massive plot points get gutted, it makes you wonder why 4kids brought it over if they weren't going to show it properly. After all, if audiences in Japan could handle it, then surely western, or more English speaking audiences could too, especially when you learn that it was unaltered in France.
      Also, with what I said about It Doesn't matter, I guess the same could also be applied to Escape From The City
      Generations' Classic rendition with its more poppy sound being like the kid brother (also Endless Mine from Sonic 3)
      Adventure 2 getting older with a more pop punk sound
      Generations Modern and older still with that more driving guitar on the "follow me, set me free" bit, giving it a heavier edge
