Might be overthinking it but Walter loving only women who are pure mothers makes me think of the Virgin Mary. She's a paradox in that she's chaste but also gave birth. Kinda odd to think Walter could probably see his mother like that.
Claudia could be on the table also because she was obsessed with another, different mother: She wanted Heather/Cheryl to give birth to their god, and when she threw up the fetus Claudia was horrified and tried to birth said god herself, making her a twisted surrogate.
I lost my shit when I got to the wheelchair corridor. A room full of mildly inconveniencing mobility aids is not particularly threatening to me as wheelchair user, though it's a pretty funny metaphor for how we're seen by the ableds.
You know, when I've played the with my brother we used to find it hilarious -like wheelchairs that can knock you off is just a whacky idea. After reading your comment I feel kind of guilty because there may be some truth to it, that for ableds wheelchairs, its users...are definitely an Other, like something we don't even imagine we'll experience. I'd say in general is alienation from any suffering, be it mental, physical...for me that's what Walter's anger represents (a sort of extreme response after justifiably feeling invisible, abused etc.). Anyway, cheers and hope your day goes well
Muse, this is one of your best. Seriously, the analysis in this particular video is so on point and so cogent that I am ashamed I didn't even see these parallels. Phenomenal.
You can try to bring as much horror to the wheelchairs in Silent Hill 4 as you want. But in the end, they are simply hilarious from a gameplay perspective. I love the way they send Henry careening when he gets hit.
I'm a Silent Hill fan, and had been playing since the 1st game on the Ps1 system. To me the most disturbing and scariest was this game, and that's why I never got to finish it. I only got as far as the subways, which is not much.
6:00 This is apparently untrue. Vinny vinesauce played this game recently and she literally made a comment as soon as he got in and in front of the head.
Wow, I actually learned alot in this analysis! I don't think of my own accord I would have thought to consider the reason it was called St. Jerome's hospital. In fact, until this video, I thought it was a revisit of Brookhaven. I did though... The idea of Walter having a paradoxical love/hate thing towards women makes him even more fascinating as a villain. Didn't ever catch the shadows of people in the wheelchairs either. I also did not realize Claudia was a thing...little details of symbolism and subtlety are a big part of why this series is so intriguing...
Walter was attracted to Cynthia in the past, even approaching her to (being socially ignorant) tell her he'd be watching her for quite a long time. Given Cynthia's personality, she confronted and rejected him. He would always remember that. That is in part why his attack on her was brutal. We can't forget either that little Walter is what remains good in him and is what saved Eileen. After all, she was the first person to show him kindness when she was a child, and part of him remembered that as well. I'm also not sure Eileen's outfit has anything to do with why she was attacked. It was her turn after all and we aren't given any information on why he'd hate sexual women. If he was scorned in some way, Walter made them a target especially. We can look to the former guard and the jerk living at the apartment he electrocuted. Or the guy set on fire. Those are not immediate deaths and torture in their own right. I'd imagine a man who always had been lonely and warped by a cult, would want companionship. He'd experienced cruelness from men and women in the cult and very little kindness outside. Women especially as seen with Cynthia, would likely embody what a woman should not be to him. His mother was the perfect woman; kind and nurturing. Anything less is a perversion and would be treated in kind.
There's something that I don't understand, Walter told her that "it's been 10 years since I called your name or something". And at that time Cynthia was 13. So why the heck would Walter stalk Cynthia since she was 3 years old. I don't understand
@@Crystalsyrp Are you sure you're not confusing him saying that when he met her older and talking about when he met her at 13? You can't stalk a toddler, as she's with parents and unlikely to be strolling about as she was as a teen with her friends.
Great video, man! Also, kind of unrelated but I think you'd really like this rpg horror game called Witch's Heart, its themes are centered around victims perpetuating and repeating their trauma and harming each other even with initially good intentions (mostly involving bringing something back or "saving" someone), there's a ton of symbolism involving things like the witch hunts, hangings, demonic contracts and a mansion that doesn't let them get out once they're in, it's really good and the art is cute for the most part
You forgot to mention Eileen's breaths and moaning in the head room. But I don't think Eileen's head indicates anything about Henry. It shows up whether he abused the peephole or not. It more likely says something about Walter or Joseph. Or maybe it's just Silent Hill messing with Henry's mind, since earlier in the game he was trying to get Eileen's attention so he could get out of the room but she couldn't see him or hear him.
I know this videos are a bit older, but Ive recently discovered your page, maybe a few weeks or so ago, and as 20+ plus year diehard Silent Hill fan; I wanted to say your page is one of if not the best SH youtube channels Ive ever come across. Your hard work in researching is extremely admirable, and its a crime you dont have waaaaay more subscribers.
Insteresting this hint of Claudia, because she was the mother of god on SH3, that's probably a hint about the ritual of Walter, this ceremony will lead Eileen to the same fate, she will be gone after the birth of the god. The game was great to put Walter as a menace at this point, because he will be on Mister X mode later.
Walter wasn't using them as playthings, Walter is not about hating women, it's about not having his mother and hunts other women based on his lack of mother. You can actually find all these during the game, hell even in the apartment during the end when you find Walter on the cross there's a note that says I will see you soon mother, also if I recall correctly there are other places as that mentioned all that and if you get the holy mother ending you see little Walter asking about his mother. Though however Walter DID killed women more slowly out of curiosity on how it's to be a mother and to get information about his mother whereabouts. Eilin also was a target for a long time. Except Cynthia, Walter killed her out of hatred
It's no secret that many serial killers or persons with antisocial personality disorders have had an unhealthy relationship with their parents, and as women that lack a good father or suitable male role model often have unhealthy relationships with the opposite sex or social interaction in general, so too do men when they lack a positive mother figure. It could be because there is no mother, the mother was abusive, or the son had an Oedipal complex. Perhaps the mother being large represents his seeing her as a goddess or idol, perhaps she's large because she's a castrating figure to him. We (or maybe I) usually associate psychological castration with bigger men, but it's not just about being made to feel weak physically. If a man feels his mother, lover, or perhaps especially an unrequited romantic interest is too good for him, holds too much power over him or that he's incapable of satisfying her as a son/lover/friend/etc, it can possibly make him feel even more castrated than a man he couldn't hope to best in combat. It might also be worth noting that if a boy grows up with a mother (good or bad in her role) but no father to serve as a positive male role model or to keep his creepy, subconscious Freudian desire to return to his womb in check with a dose of castration, the boy may just as well be damned to grow up with an unhealthy attitude toward women (aggression or aversion, neither is good) or just people in general. It may also stop him from growing up: nobody finds your attachment to your mother creepy when you're five, after all.
The timeline confuses me even more now that you added points I didn't know: if Claudia was a child during the first game, and around Alessa's age, why does she look and behave so much older than Heather in the third game? She talks to Heather with the condescension of a much older woman, as though Heather just doesn't understand her role because she's an immature or inexperienced child. Her face (besides looking to me like she had fetal alcohol syndrome) looks like a woman of middle age, and I possibly mistook her white hair for that of an older woman. Heather looks like she's yet to escape puberty, and as you mentioned before some of her arc involves an awkward transition into womanhood. Also, I thought Claudia died regardless of which ending you get in Silent Hill 3, but when Walter is playing with the uterus of an obviously chaste woman's corpse she looks freshly dead - I actually thought she may have died just then as a result of his vivisection and I counted her as one of his victims. She actually looks more fair in 4 than 3, with a prettier face and while she always had the pailour of a corpse (I can relate) she was either very well preserved or had not been dead long at all... Het blood is still fluid and her eyes haven't turned to mush. Also, how did her body get there? She died in the chamber of Heather's Rosemary baby boss fight. On a side note of "it's a f@$%ing game, dude," is that gyroscope thing the same device from "Event Horizon"?!
You forgot to mention the moaning sounds that can be heard in the room of Eileen head, which prove more your point of the theme of sexuality that you were explaining.
Those freaking burping monsters in that hospital really took me out of it tbh. I was hilariously pissed off about how dumb they choose to make the monsters burp instead of picking something more appropriate

I heard heavy breathing from the "Head" but it wasn't until much later re playing that I noticed exactly what kind of heavy breathing it indeed was and I came to the same conclusion that it was because of Henrys voyeurism. And all the pieces came together, why he collapsed at her "murder", why he knows her name and almost no one else in the building, and the "Head" room gave us a glimpse into what Henry was feeling when peeping into her room without her consent. Henry is a good person overall, but not perfect, and thats why I love the SH series so much, even the good arent perfect.
Hmm that's a little bit of overtheorizing. Eileen was going to be attacked at any point, despite of being dressed in a sexual way or not. That's because she is the 20th Sacrament.
