how many musicians would ring up reviewers to tell their reviews were wrong.. cathal coughln did. reviewers in the irish music business were scared of him. he did not tolerate BS. very singular guy. he came up with the title only losers get the bus after Thatcher verbally shat all over people who came from a lower socio economic background. thatcher said only losers get the bus. so cathal coughlin wrote the song entitled only losers get the bus. clock comes down the stairs is their masterpiece.
Most of Ireland’s youth were unemployed in the 1980s. It was a rough time but it’s easy to forget there was a lot of beautiful moments between people. I won’t forget that time or the optimism and camaraderie of this tune. I think a lot of Irish people who grew up in the 80s will remember a feeling when they hear Microdisney. Thanks boys 👍
Ireland must have been badly affected but I live in England and it's incredible to think that the unemployment rate in the UK stood at more than 3million for over five years between the tail end of 1981 and the end of 1986/start of 1987. As it happens I'd just started a new job and was busy getting my feet under the table when this song was released as a single here in early 1987. Hearing it on the radio at the time made me think of going on some kind of jaunt in weather appreciably sunnier than what's seen in the video. RIP Cathal Coughlan.
I never tire of this song and video. I notice something new in it with each view and sometimes I just focus on the strings in the song, or Cathal's cheeky face, or the cyclists, or a missed cymbal hit. So good! PS 3:28 Oooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I taped this from the radio. Still on a cassette to this day. Googled Microdisney and found that Cathal had passed away. Gone too soon. I was born on the same day. Another thing, most people can't pronounce my name either. Spoiler, its not Craig McKenzie
This was the first Microdisney song I ever heard - haven't stopped listening since. Cathal's stare and rigid arms contrasting with that beautiful lilting melody - classic!
Me too. Just saw them mentioned in a Telegraph article saying they were a 'proper' Irish band, unlike the Pogues (according to him). And it rang a bell - I bought this single, although I (very) stupidly got rid of all my vinyl when we moved house a few years ago. Like you say - fab.
I remember this from back in '86/7. It was on a show by the BBC? that lasted the weekend...all the best bands..echo n the bunnymen..it was fabulous! what was it?.
Where was the Video Filmed, Not in Ireland i guess, Some of the buildings are to tall in the back ground and thus would have never got Planning permission in Ireland, London perhaps?
RIP Cathal Coughlan - a musical genius gone too soon.

If only people appreciated back then eh

As an American i had no idea how to say his name, but no one in America knows the band so it’s not a topic of casual conversation alas
One of the greatest choruses ever written. Beautiful song.
RIP Cathal. Such sad news :(

RIP Cathal Coughlan.
Thoroughly deserved to be a massive hit.
Think they just said fuck it when this wasnt the massive hit it should have been , brilliant pop song
It got radio play and some DJ love here in the UK but the half-anticipated/half hoped-for hit didn't quite materialise.
🙏 RIP
This was the first Microdisney song I ever heard - haven't stopped listening since. Cathal's stare and rigid arms contrasting with that beautiful lilting melody - classic!
some sad news...Cathal Coughlan died yesterday aged 61 after battling a long illiness
Loved this
RIP
I'd forgotten how fab this song was!

RIP Cathal, beat Irish band ever
Love watching them here and then singing the clock now. They were cool then and still are...
still loving this song. ..humming it all the time.
Gone too soon. Cathal was a genius who never got the recognition he deserved.
Still sounds brilliant
Still a great song after all these years!
Knocks U2 into a cocked hat. RIP Cathal, thank you for the wonderful music,
Loving you always Cathal, thank you x
RIP Cathal.
A lot of great Irish rock groups were from Cork. The Frank and Walters and Sultans of Ping fc are good examples and Microdisney. RIP Cathal Coughlan
Just great.
That chorus is absolute perfection. As is the rest of the song.
Effortlessly joyful!
Fab little video too!
one of the biggest choruses ever put to tape
How fab is this band...no overacting...just talent..
Bloody great band.
Still phenomenal
I remember this from back in '86/7. It was on a show by the BBC? that lasted the weekend...all the best bands..echo n the bunnymen..it was fabulous! what was it?.
This song proved to be the Cork band's only real hit single, reaching Number 30 in Ireland and Number 55 in the UK.
Cathal Coughlan was a maestro. This song deserved better acclaim and Fatima Mansions were a great band.
Crooked mile was a great record 👍
When's the promised autobio coming out,
@@dancrowley5128 I agree
Great song, I had the 45 rpm
Frickin' EPIC!
When the daily parade of the troubles you made
Gets you down
Just consider the fate of the wide open space
From town to town...
What a writer Cathal coughlan was. Birthday girl, clock comes down the stairs, singers hampstead home, only loosers get the bus etc
He's still going. New album out this year.
@@arianrhodhyde7482 he left the best to last. Song of Co-Alkan is a true masterpiece. RIP Cathal.
@@KarlHamilton RIP. Some of the Telefís stuff was so good as well.
Now watch clock comes down live...superb.
4 lps and Australia got nothing.just found them in "smash hits " magazine.never saw them on tv.
Lyrically Cathal was the equal of Dylan and Cohen and way surpassed Morrissey who he was frequently compared to.
What part of cork was he from
Why is this not on Spotify??

It’s Caaaaal...
Irish band.
Where was the Video Filmed, Not in Ireland i guess, Some of the buildings are to tall in the back ground and thus would have never got Planning permission in Ireland, London perhaps?
Probably was London, the lead singer lived there at the time.
East End mate - that's the point Town To Town - from one shithole to another. lol
Who are those cyclists?
So rude of the singer and the guitarist not caring if the others catch the glass cube or not.
