- The opulence of a masked ball in the Italian city of Venice during Carnival must be seen to be believed. Correspondent Seth Doane joins revelers, including a couple who traveled from Florida to attend a lavish costume party, "Il Ballo del Doge"; and talks with designer Antonia Sautter, who has created ever-more extravagant costumes for this Venetian tradition dating back centuries.

"A world without joy is not a good world." Truth!
Why do watch CBS then?
thank you for this fantastic report! i am the developer and operator of the software that runs the real-time eye projected on the stage. i am very grateful for this work and honored to be on cbs !
Even though I know that attending a party like that won't be cheap, I'd still like to attend at least once. Perhaps even be a part of the entertainment. :)
Confirmed: it is awesome to be wealthy. Got it.
Beautiful Beautiful
Costumes are incredible! Very skilled .
I don't know, looks like a cruise ship show. "Let the sun shine in", really? How about period music to make it more autentico.
😂😂 my thought exactly! But most rich are seriously OUT OF TOUCH!!
Neither event is unfailing. It passed by 📓
Masquerade balls looks amazing 💚😍
Would love to go to this! Now off to research how to get a ticket...
Same.
Around end of Jan 2009, I was in Venice few days before the carnival began, but the party started, people were dressed up in costume walking on the streets. You can rent traditional costumes at many shops. I wondered into a jewelry boutique, the owner said he was going to the party and gave me a poster for the party, but it's too expensive for me.
I went to the free event, a wine fountain ⛲ people packed up around the square, light snow that night Yes, I got a small cup of wine from the wine ⛲. I stood next to the police for security, my passport, money were inside my shirt. The next morning, there was the grand parade of different decorative gondola, but I sleep in and missed it.
I have been to Venice 3 times, it's better than Disney because the city existed for centuries and is still real prices are high during the carnival, which was why I visited few days before the carnival began. It's easy to nevegate Venice, signs everywhere pointing to the popular attractions, and walking is the best way to see everything, bridges after bridges.😊
I
I think it wonderful that people still want go to balls but I’m a little sad 😔 that I didn’t see anybody dance on the dance floor especially a waltz would have been nice 👍
The wrong time-period.
@@florinest you might have a point but still seeing a waltz at a ball is still icing on cake 🎂 nothing compares to it just my opinion
Tom Cruise and Nicole, in character, used to go to a similar event.
eyes wide shut 😳
Venice is a beautiful city (some say the most beautiful). I know it for its spectacular churches and great art. These masked balls however always offend me because they are elitist entertainment reserved for those who can afford to revel in glitz. Let's not kid ourselves, Antonia Sautter. The people who contribute to create them are just paid employees.
Agreed. The actual city of Venice is spectacular -- this ball isn't.
I agree-$5,000 a ticket!!!
There are always going to be different economic strata in society. Why shouldn't people enjoy this if they can afford it? Thank you.
If they enjoy their work and what they create, that may be enough. I'm an introvert. I would probably do the work without being paid, but I wouldn't want to go to the ball. Venice is gorgeous! I went there long ago, backpacking, in the summer after a college semester. I'd love to go back!
@Noe Berengena I could not agree more.
The romanticist in me loves this, the anticapitalist in me hates it.
Ewww. Looks like Vegas meets Venice. Surely there are still some genuine costume parties? Of course, you can't buy a ticket to those, and the hosts aren't inviting reporters in to cover them.
Magnificent
If you Google .. Venice masked ball. .. You Will see much better costumes ....😊 just my opinion
Beautiful.❤
No, thank you. I’m happy with a prime box seats at La Scala in Milan each season.
Oh look! You out-snobbed the snobs! _Good for you!_
U ALL. B. Good. Love you ALL 🎉👽🌏🌍🌎
And, to end the evening, a Human Hunt.
Yeah the New World Order is evil people don't look in between the lines.....
Just saying....
Is there enough water in the channels now for the traffic?
I would go, to this event, and I would be coming a lot further, then Florida: Phoenix, Arizona
Eyes wide shut
Yuck.
My budget allows for a less formal, but affordable American Mardi Gras!
If I had the money, I would so DO THIS!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If they all ever seen my Venetian mask I make in Georgia you’ll all go crazy .
Slide sandals simply do not work when a person has very narrow feet. I have yet to find a brand where my feet don't slide through much too far
I want to go to this party! Invite me! @Sunday morning
$5,000 + flight+ hotel+ food 😊
I only visit Venice during off season
Good to see this report, but I have no interest in being at that ball. But Venice itself? Yes! The essence of Venice is real and sublime and has nothing to do with silly falderal like this.
Best time to visit is September, still warm and cheaper. I took a 12 hour Greek ferry to Athens from Venice in 2011, crossing the Adriatic sea, so relaxing

How did they fill that canal? A week ago, they were all dry beds. Wow. Global Warming is nutz.
Really decadent and horrible given most people's and Europe's financial and human plights. Bad story, CBS Sunday.
This is the kind of thing that sustained bad past times in Europe. Yes, there were famines in places like France in the past. Italians love beauty. They're fantastic at creating it. It's something to appreciate. It's part of what western civilization is about.
Thank you. I completely agree.
@steve conn I was coming here to write this.
No room for dancing???
WOKE
