I'd argue that the first movement here, as a toccata, might well be made (somewhat) to impress, but I can't deny Gulda plays his interpretation very well. EDIT: To be clear, I know it's a prelude, but it feels like it's in a sort of toccata style.
@thejugglenaut91 The reason why he speeds up suddenly in the Prelude is because it's specifically marked Presto there. Some books say to play this at 104-116 to the quarter note. If you do that, you have barely any room to speed up for the Presto, which is why Gulda plays the first part of the Prelude slower to give an illusion effect.
I've heard through a lot of your uploaded Gulda-Bach videos. I must say, I really love his style of playing (even though this particular piece here is played really slowly - but that is not the point of this comment), BUT what totally ruins my experience of feeling of music is his using of trills on almost all final notes. While I enjoy them throughout the pieces, it just makes it sound jolting when it finally arrives at its destination: the (climactic) end. ("OH how beautif--- whoops")

Bach is never about pyrotechnic speed. The music is meant to express, not impress. I love this reading.

I like the way Gulda sort of rapidly changes the dynamic in this one, I think it accentuates the most beautiful parts of this prelude
This is great. I've been looking for a slower tempo.

ty for upload... made my homework easier to follow :)
Also, I like Gulda's interpretation. It's refreshing in a way!
The Tempo is perfect.
En la versión interpretada al piano no hay otra como ésta.
Chef d'œuvre.
Used to sing this in high school and college - a la Swingle Singers.
Omg,I dont believe it.....Level 6 Face Shrine-Legend of Zelda-Link's Awakening!!!!

manuscript of this piece never says "presto"
@@petrus7977 yes, it says presto in that part, and allegro by the end, nothing in the beginning so it was well assumed to be a nomal tempo to start
@@carchu83 bro, manuscript doesnt say nothing about tempo, since Bach didnt use any tempo (nor p or f) marks
@@petrus7977 yes Indeed Bach used presto allegro etc look for the manuscript and You Will see it written by him between both pentagrams
ua-cam.com/video/lzQT1tTLUME/v-deo.html can You see it in 1:13 justo above the G in left hand says presto

1:40 the baroque breakdown
I actually prefer this tempo
@Annahcraiv
also had to think of Moonlight, but it comes as no surprise that Beethoven is heavily inspired by Bach ^^
Well, you are quite lucky because Gulda is well known for playing Beethoven's pianosonatas at highest tempo of all pianists worldwide :D
This is so 'Bach' I think, compared to other players play their styles. Just my opinion. I like Richter's playing WTC as well.
I think that when its played in as slower time Glenn Gould is great
wow, small inaccuracies, if even the great Gulda could happen something like this in this piece, I am okay with my piano practice ;)
Face shrine...
arcTheslayer yeah, omg it sounds refined here though~!
참 아름답군요
I prefer it slower like this.
umm, well, this interpretation sure is "different." But that's Gulda, after all....
Cool tempo, but I think that 1:43 should be more slower.
_Vini_Marcos_ 5 hi,
It's wrote presto on this part, on the score.
Regards
this isnt a fucking letter to the president its a youtube comment
guys, swing is the word, cela ca swing mon dieu, ainsi que du 8 e flat minor and the rest of gulda...only swing
2:14 Janis Joplin Summertime? :D

2:55 sounds somewhat like the Jurassic Park theme.
