Mmmh, well, the background graphics are slightly improved (the only significant differences are the nicer-looking Sphinx @13:47 and the fact that there's a background during most boss fights) but they butchered the main character when he is in his Hu-Man, Piranha-Man and Lion-Man forms. Also, while the soundtrack rendition is pretty good for the most part, it's not as catchy, not as magical as the Master System version and they even ruined my favorite tune which is "Side-Crawler's Dance" and whose final part turned out really bad in this version (from here 6:13). So overall, I'd say that this is a nice port but the Master System original version feels truer and remains the way to go to experience this retro gem. There's also a Game Gear port but apparently it's full of problems. I will see about that... edit: taking a glance at some comments, geez, some people need to chill. To come here just to whine at those who prefer the Master System version's art style and/or music, really? Just let people prefer what they want, especially for something as subjective as those things (basically anything arts-related: graphics, music...).
I just started playing this again on the Magic Engine emulator. I remembered I never could finish this game on my TG-16. I can't wait to play again when I get home.
I'm not sure about the original version of the game or this TurboGrafx/PC Engine version, but in that remake, you can actually continue a little bit after beating the game, allowing you to play as your human form again. If you collect all 6 charm stones (a currency system which was modified from the original version so that you have to locate them from hidden chests rather than get them as item drops from enemies), one charm stone per transformation, you can unlock hidden doors around the village which lets you fight any of the bosses again using any form you want rather than the ones you've been forced to use during the normal game.
@@Maxx_XIII In the original Master System version entering a cheat code into the password would give you the ability to start off as human and find the hidden doors around town for each boss. I love receiving charm stones from enemies and getting them in treasure boxes, for me the surprise of a charm stone from an enemy and the potential of collecting so many of the rarities is one of the top 5-10 things I like about the game. In the remake do charm points count for purchasing weapons etc? Does armour affect charm points?
Also more charm points would give you more money from enemies, some you'd get money bags where you previously got coins. Did this continue? The remake sounds like it's not my thing.
The hallway and the battle against Meka Dragon was shown in the hidden bonus dungeon in _Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom_ . It looked a lot like this version, except that Jin is livelier in pixels than the Hu-man.
I remember playing this when I was a Kid on the Sega Master system. I don't know why, and I know this version was better but I liked playing it more on the Sega System. Theres something else. Does anyone remember the Manual? If you look into about "How to continue the game" it shows an example with a snap shot where you get your password, if you looked at it closely the password and use it, it will give you every item and you get Millions of coins and is set to defeat the finalboss LOL!!
+Daniel Thompson Slightly better music??? Listen to them side by side. The TG16 version sounds much fuller, and more synth-y. Some of the songs have a nice bass instrument (completely lacking on the SMS version).
My childhood is the SMS version but this sounds so much better. People shitting about this version when is far superior than the SMS version lol. O love the original but I find this a great version
i swear the tasmanian sword doesn't work in the turbo grafx version. I've been trying to look up how to use it on this version and I couldn't find anything. I looked up the master system version and i tried the combo and it didn't work. Please could somebody tell me if this item works in the tgx16 version.
It's also the first game I played as a kid. Our PC Engine broke a few years ago but I want to play it again!! Where can I download this game?? Pleasee??!
I still think that the Game Gear version was the best, as it did something with the emeralds. I like the Piranha Man and Hawk Man sprite on PC Engine but still prefer the music and wonderboy-ness of the Sega versions. Can't stand the remake, though.
I see it's lost a lot of the magic of the Master System version when it was ported over. The characters look a bit rubbish and the music and sound effects are a lot worse. It also seems faster but that might be the emulator. I preferred the pacing of the original.
+Profound79 Put the crack pipe down... the music is much better in this version. Master System PSG is rubbish. It's the same game with better colors and music.
+Profound79 It's faster because it's the NTSC version. The original versions run at 60fps, while the PAL/EU versions run at 50fps. A common problem with releasing games in the EU regions at that time.
+Profound79 The version that you grew up with or initially played through will always be the one you prefer when comparing ports of specific games. :) For me, the Turbo/PCE version rules!
Damn Deal Done Obviously character art is subjective, but this updated character art ~is~ Japanese in origin. The MS versions of the characters are like 4-5 colors max, while the PCE ones are 15 colors range. The Lizard-man actually looks like a dragon in the PCE version, which makes more sense IMO (you don't need dragon mail to be immune to lava when in this form - a trait attributed to dragons and not lizards). I don't think anyone is capable of being objective if nostalgia is any kind of influence. Matter of fact, I know of a teen who has not attachment or nostalgia to either system or this game, who played through it recently and thought the PCE character art and style was superior. I can't understand if people don't like the upgrades because of some bias influence, but those upgrades do make the port superior. Hell, simply having the game run at 60fps vs the MS version of 30fps is a big improvement.
Personally I love the music on the PC Engine better than on Master system / Game gear.

The dragon forged a trail of destruction through my land and monstrously disfigured me. What a goon.
I just started playing this again on the Magic Engine emulator. I remembered I never could finish this game on my TG-16. I can't wait to play again when I get home.
There's a remake of this out just this past year with hand drawn sprites and a string quartet accompaniment.

Loved the games music, I had this game for the turbo grafx 16
I played the master system version as a kid, but I must say, this is much better.
Monoid Finally! Someone agrees with me!
@@ben_bun No one who is sound of mind would disagree with you on that.
Funny how past Meka, the boss room from every other fight is pretty much the same one from Wonder Boy 2 XD
The hallway and the battle against Meka Dragon was shown in the hidden bonus dungeon in _Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom_ . It looked a lot like this version, except that Jin is livelier in pixels than the Hu-man.

The password was westone
I remember this last level well. But only after entering WESTONE as the password.
im downloading this for the master system and im going to find this instead, will be a nice change with different sprites and slightly better music.
+Daniel Thompson Slightly better music??? Listen to them side by side. The TG16 version sounds much fuller, and more synth-y. Some of the songs have a nice bass instrument (completely lacking on the SMS version).
+malducci i said I will find this one, it will be a nice change with better music. I'm agreeing with you.
@@danielthompson707 The point is that calling it *_only_* "slightly better" is a FUCKING HUGE understatement. It is TREMENDOUSLY better.
That's all.
This version seems really generous with the health potions.
imho the sega master system version was the best of all versions :)
and thats acctually the first game i played as a kid :) ahhh sweet nostalgia ;)
Wow this music takes me back YEEEEEARS
Thank You Very Much
A good upgrade over the Master System version.
My childhood is the SMS version but this sounds so much better. People shitting about this version when is far superior than the SMS version lol. O love the original but I find this a great version
wonderboy 3?
What if Wonder Boy was ported to Sega Genesis
I don’t think you understand the power of the boomerang.
that thumbnail tho

Does anybody know if the PC Engine version (not TG16) of this game is in English? In other words is it playable?
No idea if it is in English, but it is definitely playable. :) English's got nothing to do with that.
Not sure if the Japanese TG 16 version is in english but it will still be playable.
Anyone know the name of the song at the beginning?
It's also the first game I played as a kid. Our PC Engine broke a few years ago but I want to play it again!!
Where can I download this game?? Pleasee??!
Aha, another version of Wonder Boy - the dragon's curse. Interesting.
anybody know how to change character with tasmanian sword in this version? thank you
Oh yeah, you're right. Silly me...
@supercyrus i agree :) and it was the 1st game i played as well! i wldve bn only 4 years old n my mum had 2 kill the first dragon boss 4 me lol
they kinda ruined the atmosphere with that intro text don't you think? still it plays somewhat better.
1:20 GIGAN !
I will find my TurboGrafx 16 in this cluttered basement....
Dragon's Trap
is this game harder then mega man (nes)?
Thanks for this! :)
i really thing the SMS version looks and sounds better.
I agree
Perhaps if you have ABSOLUTELY DEAF EARS, then we can all agree. Put a limit on nostalgia and recognize superiority when you see it, guys.

i bought the turbo16 version on amazon for 8.99 new. i was so much better at this game when i was a kid. it's harder now hahaha
@cubex55 may I ask what program did you use to record your gameplay.
17:50 missing a secret :p

I dont like the sound when he/it attacks something.

what is so bad about being a dragon?

Click on my name then uploads to play TurboGrafx16 on PC.
No

The Last Dungeon. Click on my name then go to uploads to download Dragon's Curse Music.
The music is horribly butchered in the PC version. That's my only gripe.
You mustn't be very good of hearing. To state the *very* least.
