Hearing the music again to this game has brought back a flood of memories to when i was a kid, i had a master system and about 90 plus games!!! The main memories of my youth
I thought there where more games, maybe only in Europe then. But to get back at this maybe he was a kid in the year 2000 when Mastersystem games where really cheap?
It is very unlickely that a kid in 2000 was interested in the master system. That was the end of the 5th gen and almost the beginning of the 6th gen with consoles like PS2 / XBOX / Gamecube. There weren't even that many collector's yet. There wasn't really a collector's community or something like retro gaming at least not for generations of 3th and onwards. I think he said that he had 90 games in the 3th or 4th gen. That would probably be a bit much. Even halve of it would be a lot of games. They were more expensive back in the days (before 2000 and onwards).
Sega Master System had so many freakin great games for it. This game, Phantasy Star, Shinobi, Zillion, Ys, Black Belt, Fantasy Zone, R-Type, Double Dragon and others. One of the most underrated systems ever.
The perfect platformer. The wondeboy series had enough adventure elements to get you thinking and Part 3 certainly wasn't a walkover. This game was huge back in the day, and arguably The Master Systems greatest game.
This game seriously blew my mind as a kid. Coming from the Atari 2600, a deep "Metroidvania" style game like this was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. I had no idea what this game even was and I had no idea what to expect, since I only ended up owning a copy after my family bought an SMS used with a ton of games through a classified ad.
I liked how the first stage picks up right at the final castle and final boss in Wonder Boy II. That castle was a real hard maze, with a final boss which was tough as nails, but it was simplified in WB3 to set up the mood and story.
Among the most fond memories from my childhood was playing this game, at a friends house. Now I am 38 and I own it myself and play it reminiscing life as a kid - it was good. Thank you for making this game, and for uploading this video. Needless to say this is a masterpiece of digital arts and entertainment. Best 8-bit game imo.
What a walk in memory lane! One of the music on the master system.i remember playing this game after wonder boy 2 and I didn’t understand where are the levels. You go back and forth all the time and that is how I was introduced to backtracking and I love backtracking ever since

One of the only platform games I really took pleasure in beating (first time was hard!!) and had as much fun playing and replaying afterwards. I just love everything about it. The music, the ambiance, the different game plays with the different animal boys... it’s a really outstanding game. Best the genre had to offer IMO.
Gah!!! That stupid hidden door at 1:50:45!? As a kid, I always fell into that room and didn't know how to get out! I only realised after many attempts of mashing the Controller that a hidden door was there! Meanwhile, this is probably the only SMS game that had a decent ending! Most other SMS titles just flashed a "The End" logo and reverted back to the Main Menu lol
Heres a small story for you guys. When I was young me and my friend were playing this at my house on master system. We were in the main town area and i remember telling him that i found a super amazing secret door that took you straight to the last boss. I was completely lying and he did believe me either, so i randonly said "watch this" and pressed up on the gamepad. A secret door opened and we warped to the pirate boss (i think). Our jaws hit the floor! Years later i realised i had, out of pure chance, pressed up on a secret door while i was lying. Will neve forget that moment, what were the odds!
For all I know, this will be the quintessential non-linear "MetroidVania" to me for the rest of my gaming life: its design is fun-damentally brilliant~!!
Damn, this game looks fun! I never heard of the master system and my folks never had money growing up so I never had a console either. But seeing all you guys reminisce about your childhoods is awesome!
It makes me so happy that i can see all the gameplay that i never used to be able to see because i was bad at the game. I was a little girl when i used to play and i would get sad because i could never get far. I wanted to see what was next. UA-cam wasnt around back then to see other people playing it. Life goes by so quickly. Im 31 now. Thank you for posting this
Easily a top 5 game on the Master System. I love good Metroidvanias, and this one's certainly top-notch for the time - perhaps even the best one from the 80s.
The Master System had tons of great games in Europe, though, especially in the UK, where it had alot of third party support. Speedball, Xenon 2, Populous, Impossible Mission, Gauntlet, Asterix, Road Rash. Lemmings, Incredible Hulk, Shadow of the Beast, and those are just off the top of my head.
I remember spending hours putting in random passwords and seeing what they did. Found a lot of weird combinations that way, some even started you off in human form (if you changed forms, you couldn't change back to human though).
What are the Human strengths? I think Lion/Tiger is OP stat wise. I am thinking CP charisma would be high for Human? Hawk is quite weak compared to other characters maybe mouse also is weaker base stats?
I was obsessed. Love my master system. So my got us one of those u it's with thousands of games. The wonder boy 1 and 2 are exact, but 3 is completely different. To say the least, as a 44 year old man never been so upset about a video game.
One of the best games of the SMS for sure, easily in my top 50 of the best games I played in my life. Still relevant today, the remake is gorgeous and is a masterclass in terms of game mechanics, level design served by an incredibly wonderful OST. An all-time masterpiece.
The Wonder Boy series on SMS was great. Better then Alex Kidd by far. Wonder Boy 2 (Monster Land) is also a great game. A shame Wonder Boy wasn't Sega's mascot after Opa Opa and before Sonic. Instead they went with Alex Kidd.
I've never undestand the greatness of the NES smb games but this game had my attention in 1989 with it's depths, colors, playability and the outstanding music what a game :)
