The more I used the Buffalo NAS the more it grew on me. It is rather spartan both in its configuration and overall physical aesthetics, but it performs quite well especially as compared to the single drive WD My Cloud.
It has the same features many other NAS drives in its price range have: a DLNA server to stream video to smart TVs, support for USB external drives for backing up, etc. But its configuration will be confusing to novice users. This is one area where the WD My Cloud has the edge with its much simpler configuration process.
Most of the important settings (like usernames, file shares, etc) are piled into the 'advanced settings' when they should really be a main function off the main menu of the web based control panel. I had issues getting the cloud service to work with my Apple Airport Extreme router that lacks UPNP capabilities. I had to set up a manual IP address for the Linkstation and manually forward ports to make it work remotely. The onboard software does not walk the user through this process unfortunately.
The iOS mobile app was also a bit confusing. It uses the same icon for uploading files as it does for sending downloaded files to another application. The app overall just feels unpolished. It works but it could be better.
Despite the UI issues the performance out of the Linkstation is outstanding. My test unit has a 7200 RPM Seagate Baracuda drive on board that delivers about 42 megabytes per second in write speed and about 100 megabytes per second in read speeds on a gigabit network. This is almost double that of the My Cloud and means that it will perform better serving large sustained data streams like video to multiple users on a network.
For overall usability WD still has the edge, but for raw performance this is an impressive device that once configured will work quite well on a home or small office network. Like all NAS drives the best performance will be had over a wired (not wireless) network. This drive does not have onboard wireless but can be connected via ethernet to a wireless router.

Congrats on getting top 100 of all Amazon product reviewer.
8 years ago and these are still being sold lol
How do you open up its casing to replace the failed drive?
awesome review Lon, in-depth in its vital points and at the same time concise 'all you need to know' information. Kudos!
This look really helpful so you don't have to drop you saved pictures to you computer. Thats super cool.
I like your reviews, very informative and you keep it interesting. Cool haircut and love the old school background with the old school looking wood book shelf :P
Great in-depth review...especially the advanced menu... keep them coming
Nice review. .I'm looking for something just to back up my Google photos and iCloud photos and videos and access it from my phone's . What you recommend?
Great vid thanks I am thinking of getting a 220 . Last one I had was a Go Flex Home that was easy and worked well until the server was closed down . Currently a Win 10 Pc is doing FTP but issues with public access being restricted ( aka it don’t connect unless you have mobile data and don’t use public wifi ) makes it miserable . From what I have seen the app will open and play pretty much any content stored on the drive .
I know this is an old video but I need some help: playing videos from within the NAS playback but no audio through iPhone speakers. However, if I connect headphones or Airplay to another speaker the audio works fine. What could be the problem?
Lon, you mention this is Time Machine compatible, and later in the review you mention how you have everything hardwired to the network. Did you do any testing with Time Machine wirelessly?
Also, I know you mention the risk with the single drive units, and in the review you talk about the ability to make a direct copy of the drive. Is there a way to replace the hard drive in the LinkStation 210 should its hard drive fail, or a way to transfer a copy back to the LinkStation?
Great review!
Can i automatically back up certain iOS or Android folder(s) from any of these two? Mainly photo folders.
This is a really high quality, in-depth review. Thank you for the post.
Got a working 210 after having to deal with 3 RMAs with Buffalo. Once getting it and hooking it up, it didn't want to talk to my router. I had to go in and force my router to accept it and finally, I have backup for my RAID 0. Its been copying files for the better part of a couple hours now.
Lon, will a sleep/wakeup function prolong the shelf-life of a NAS drive? If so, which NAS drive would you recommend? I am looking for a cloud hub which i can put in seagate or hitachi drives. enough of WDs, they have caused me lots of problems with data loss and disk write failures. Do advise!
Yeah, agreed. Love the synology cloud's web interface.
Another question. Shall i stinge by using a non NAS drives for cloud purposes?
Hi, i just subcribed to you simply because all of your videos are detailed and really plays a big part in my decision to get my first NAS device. I saw the the Buffalo mentioned, ytd in one of my local Challenger stores. i'm still thinking which NAS(2TB) i should go for. So far, i have looked at your videos from WDmycloud to Seagate Central to Buffalo. Can you please advise me? thanks!
Thanks! The reason im considering those 3(buffalo, WD, Seagate) is because i only saw those 3 in my local challenger store. Also, i have already decided for now, on WD My Cloud because it can get many users, configurations and usb 3.0 safepoint seems fairly important unlike Seagate Central which u have to pay for a seat and has usb 2.0. My concern for now on WDmycloud would be, does it really matter for the write speed and read speed?
I have also read on forums that WDmycloud disconnects easily from the cloud network and failed on remote services. So bottomline, i'm still considering.
Thanks again too and i will look into your video on synology when i get home.
Just hooked up my device. Despite the device showing a solid white light when I try to connect I get an error saying No NAS devices found. Any idea how to troubleshoot this? I can’t find anything useful on google.
sorry if you answered this question. Can you use this NAS to use it as a plex server?
hi lon, can i ask you if you recommend this product over my cloud (1bay), because i like the torrent option that my cloud doesn't have, cheers
The Navigator program that came with the device will not recognize the device. Workaround is to connect via a Web Browser to the IP address. You can get the same functionality there. P.S. I deleted the program from my computer.
Have you heard of the new QNAP HS-251 and TS-251 devices? Would love to see how it performs with the HDMI output playing high res videos, compared to the streaming boxes and NUCs
Hi Lon, Can you tell me if this can be seen by an Android Box (Running Kodi) ?
If I only need the NAS Drive for two pc's and 1 iPad, can I have my NAS connected to internet via wifi adapter as opposed to being directly connected via Lan if unavailable?
Can I plug a 5TB drive into the back of the Buffalo Linkstation 210 NAS and basically increase my storage to 9TB?
I am working on the ship. On the ship was installed LAN network for 15 computers with same IP subnet mask. I want to know if possible install movies on BUFFALO LS210D 4TB (like on external hard drive) and sharing with all 15 computers that everybody can watch movies?
I want to be able to backup & sync an external hard drive connected to my Mac to the linkstation 210.
I am missing thumbnails on videos from iPhone how i can see thumbnails? Please please help
i bought it used, how i do factory reset it keep asking me a connection to ls210d6d5 could not be established, do u want to automatically correct the ip address? Clicked yes and asked what the admin password , tried default password "admin" and password does not not work. Any ideas using "NAS Navigator 2" thanks anybody
I accidently changed my Ip address on it and I can no longer access it. Any ideas that can help me?
If you have to select what file protocol a file to open with, does this mean i cant open a file on my windows laptop that was put on the drive from my mac?
***** thanks alot man great review by the way. very helpful and informative.
Hi Lon , how is it going?
i'd like to know 2 things:
1 - how to download a movie torrent direct to NAS and be able to watch in my smart tv?
2 - how to copy some movies that i have in a pen drive to the NAS?
Thank you!!!!
+Fabio Conde look for QNAP NAS.
Does this nas support plex?
To my knowledge, it doesn't have a server, but if you set up a file share, you can map the share on a pc with the plex server and point the plex files at that network drive.
It also scared me the first time I shut down this back up, no software shutdown... just manual toggle
Everytime I try to delete a file, it said something like 'root/unix required...'. Any ideas why? Thanks
I'm late. Try setting permissions in the UI.
Damn, I should have bought the WD my cloud
hi, nice review. can i connect this hdd to my smart tv? like watching movies
Yes via DLNA
Will my network recognize this right out of the box?
Your videos are very informative thank you.
Don't use PNP and don't punch holes in your firewall to make this thing face the internet directly unless you want to get owned. Don't use any cloud service, setup a vpn and connect to it like that.
Hi Lon , is that also a wifi router ? shall I buy wifi router or this device can also work as a router ?
Thank you a lot ! I though it can be a wifi router at the same time , which one do you prefer WD or Buffalo , any differences on the 3tb ? Thank you
Thank you a lot Mr.Lon , I already ordered WD . Thank you !
wooow... I just got terastation 1200D, just playing around w/it. Sadly App interface esp on android and file management isn't the best, hope it was as orginzed as google cloud.
how do you delete individual files?
Intelligent and informative.
can I run channels dvr on this
Can someone help me??? My buffalo isn’t opening up.. even on my computer. 😭😭😭
A new one? Is it the 210?
thank you :-)
After spending two weeks filling the extremely slow Linkstation that can't even be used by USB in an intuitive way, the thing is pitch black and can't be tirned on. Fortunately I saw the thing coming and made a third back upd of extremely valuable data. Return to sender, will never buy that shit again. Useless piece of garbage.
You can do a lot, and then you got a EM Sector bad = all my data lost, I did :(
WHAT FUCKING ADDRESS? WTF!! WHERE ????
why do you have a mouth?
Will this work with plex server?
***** Thx a lot I'll look into the wd as well
