Thank you! Yes, basically I have the diskless LS-WVL (2-bay). I installed one 2TB drive when I purchased. I have a 3TB drive - I'm okay with keeping the default RAID 0 so that the two disks appear as one for a total of 5TB. I was just curios if I can install the HD while the system is on and it will do the rest or if I need to power down, etc. Thank you again and great post!

Thank you for this great tutorial. In your video you explain the meaning of the colored flashing/solid LEDs and especially WHEN the function button must be pushed to transfer the system files from memory to the disks. Official guides from Buffalo are not so clear and therefore are useless. They should put a link to your video in their website.
I applied all the steps to a LS220DE-EU diskless Linkstation, therefore this guide can be used also for recent products from Buffalo.

I'm amazed that I can't find documentation of a super basic task - putting larger drives in my Linkstation, and moving all the files over. This video will give me important info on how to install the bigger drives, but I can't find the info anywhere of whether the newly installed drives will be able to read my USB backup. I'm pretty sure that's how it's supposed to work, but since I can't read the USB drive from a desktop PC, I'd like to be 100% sure before forging ahead. Bizarre that this isn't covered explicitly in the manual. Anyway, thanks for this video covering one of the crucial bits of info very clearly.

It seems like there should be a more straightforward approach, without using USB at all -- like, I should be able to clone one 1TB drive to a 4TB drive in the bays, and then clone the other. But I'm definitely not seeing any documentation of that. Maybe there's a way to do that via my PC using software along the lines of Norton Ghost...I'm just bummed out that Buffalo doesn't really document these activities, which seem pretty basic to me.

OK, finally figured out a reasonable way to do this. Two key points that were not obvious or covered in any of the docs I found: (1) Yes, the USB drive will still show up after you install and set up new blank drives in the Linkstation 220DE. I couldn't find a way to preserve my users and folder structure, but that's OK, didn't take too long. One thing I did have to do was take note of the key and configuration for web access so I could re-enter it. (2) Use web access to copy or move the folders from the USB drive to the internal drives. This is important! Web access does very quick copies, and does not rely on the client computer remaining connected. Using SMB or one of the other sharing protocols results in really long copy times, as it's going from the NAS to the client PC and then back to the NAS.

Great tutorial but, I'm running an LS210DE37 on WINDOWS 10 and it's not showing up as a drive / L drive. When it wants to it shows up as a desktop icon in My Network. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello... I have one of thos units that originally came with 1TB HHD installed from factory but down the road (like 3 years later) that HDD died but that´s not the problem... we bought a new and bigger Buffalo NAS unit and I took this one back home and I want to use it on my home network but I want to know if I can do this same procedure as a diskless unit or should I use a different method for those that came with a HDD preinstalled???

I have an old cloudstor that no longer works but the HDDs are still operable. Can I just put them in this system and be up and running? Or will it delete the data?

My LinkStation LS-WTGL/R1 Died and is out of warranty big time. The drives are fine but I hate to got through the long process of recovery and moving.
Can a diskless Buffalo get me the data back as Buffalo made both or is the diskless going to want to kill existing data?

Would be nice if there was a Linux version of your software. Yes I know I can format the drives and put them in, it just seems irresponsible to me.

    Hi Uploader,
I have the terastation pro 6 bay, I don;t have any setup CD in the box so I am not sure if I need to create a boot USB/CD to boot the unit first before it can operate or should I just install the HDD into the tray and the unit will initialise my HDD to run? Thank you

Hi guys, I had a problem with my installation diskless linkstation duo, did my installation according to the video, but the blinking info/error takes the whole night - seems like it takes all night linkstation to install the firmware to the fresh-unformatted 1TB hardrive, it didnt reboot at all. I did shut it down manually but the blue appears stable, however in NASnavigator my LS-WXL is in EM-MODE again! I'm stuck..any ideas?

I am having the same issue today when connecting a different laptop to it. The NAS navigator sees it but I can't browse it or map the drive on the laptop.
It is connected to a different laptop and I can see the share folder and access it like normal.

After spending two weeks filling the extremely slow Linkstation that can't even be used by USB in an intuitive way, the thing is pitch black and can't be tirned on. Fortunately I saw the thing coming and made a third back upd of extremely valuable data. Return to sender, will never buy that shit again. Useless piece of garbage.
