Why did this cardinal not complain when JPII AND BXVI did all of the same things? did this purported (?) Cardinal not also make an oath in regard to this Pope? Does this Cardinal believe that the Holy Spirit guides the Church through the same Pope who was validly elected?

so my take on pope francis is he cant have it both ways. he is double speak himself. his latest documents speak volumes of this double speak nonsense of his papacy.

About the pope's position on gender theory not fitting his narrative...I kind of think it does. His embrace of the LGBT community never meant that he condoned nontraditional sexual behavior. He is Jesus's representative here and now, and like Jesus, he is welcoming to every human person who seeks his blessing. Also like Jesus, Francis is more critical of sins of the spirit (pride, greed, self-righteousness, hypocrisy) than he is of sins of the flesh. I would say Francis's narrative is very consistent along these lines. To counter the suggestions from that letter from the anonymous Cardinal, we shouldn't pit compassion against justice/clarity/Tradition but, instead, practice compassion in light of justice/clarity/Tradition. The era of simplistic binary evaluations is long gone.
BTW, Mr. Allen. your economy with words and the way you express yourself are as vibrant and entertaining as Pauline Kael was as a writer. Keep it up!

I detest the implication that people who criticise Francis do so because they hate and fear homosexuality or that they are small-minded.
That's not Catholic teaching and never was. Spare us the modernist rhetorical calumny of "simplistic binary evaluations"
Increased homosexual acts and the normalising of homosexuality are signs of a society facing imminent catastrophe according to Scripture.
In addition, homosexual acts individually are a grave threat to the Soul.
You'd never glean that from Pope Francis' rhetoric and he fails those people who are active homosexuals baptised or not. He also fails solely homosexually inclined Catholics who live chaste lives.
Even if it is not intended by the Holy Father, he does cause a good dose of confusion or at least a good head scratch. The sheer amount people voicing this concern are not just making it up. Do some people over react? Sure. Do some people under react, doubley sure.

I think it would have more eloquent had he dismissed LGBT activists like Fr. James Martin, Sr. Jeanine Gramick, Fr. Timothy Radcliff and so many others, instead of honoring or promoting them, and so stirring more and more confusion with great consequence for the whole church.
And now we have another Jesuit priest Thomas Reese promoting married priests! Yet this church can’t even swallow the idea of having women deacons - 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️

Marvellous to have JA on top form - as eloquent, cogent and entertaining as he has ever been! Aided by the relative lack of controversy surrounding the issues at hand and an even greater dose of coltish enthusiasm than normal! We can safely say that despite the understandable concern brought on by a recent episode narrated with, shall we say "substantially less energy", it seems fairly clear to me that was an aberration.
The Pope - not anyone at the Vatican - should be busybodying themselves with negotiating ends to the Ukraine war which, even if it were possible, would be a Pyrrhic victory. Any cessation in fighting would have exactly the same - if not more - effect as the piece of paper Neville Chamberlain, upon returning to Blighty after a trip to meet The Führer in 1938, brandished at the airport on which was the essence of Hitler's agreement to various things he promised to do and not do, won by appeasement. The only thing the Vatican could succeed in doing is risk its medium and long term greater reputation when it turns out that Russia does an INCREDIBLE job of lying, bad faith and, with less than zero compunction, toss those treaties which simply become inconvenient to it... yes, I really hope their most reverend eminences have quietly discouraged the Pope from actively pursuing an angle in.
Let him instead deal with "higher matters" - so high, in fact, that Demos decided to write anonymously like a naughty schoolgirl sending notes in class.... again, yet further proof that there is no God - if even some cardinals, not all, act this way, it once again demonstrates the Catholic Church is no different from any other club one might join - it rarely if ever seems to have all that much to do with the divine, being much more akin to a national legislature, a political body - which is exactly what it is.

Whoever, and here we are speaking of a Cardinal, no less, who lacks the courage of his convictions, because he fears retribution (whatever that means), ought to be told that he either keeps quiet or drops the mask and speaks up with dignity (because he is dealing with matters of Faith) and humility (because any other way is conceit). When are we going to realize that one thing is the "substance" of the Gospel and the other are the "formulations" that are translated to the times we live in. Is being faithful to the "Tradition" another term for "Immobility"?
