Andy Gavin's own words on why this level was cut: "Stormy Ascent was just cut because it was too long and too hard and he ran out of time. I wish we had put it in as some kind of easter egg, as it was an awesome level, one of my favorite in the game. Long, a bit brutal, but it looked great, and had a real rhythm to it."
I think that knowing this level exists, it becomes very clear that part of the narrative is missing. It’s the only time we see the top floor of this level type and it always felt like we were supposed to get a second level like this. There is no ‘ascending Cortex Castle’ level like this where this would have been. If only they’d left it in but made it a bit easier or something like that. I love the way Crash 1 had the levels tie in with the map layout and there is a void where this level should have been. At least the waterfall level was replaced by a river level so it felt like it made some sense.

You know what they should do? Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin (The creators of Naughty Dog and the Crash Bandicoot series, just in case you didn't know) should finish of these prototype levels and put them together into a re-release of the original Crash Bandicoot on the Xbox One or PS4 with updated graphics and stuff. They move so swiftly and sporadic in such a way that they seem erratic, that it was clearly designed to royally fuck with your head. Requiring to clear this level in one go for the gem would've harmed the game in the long run, especially for an ending that only rewards you a pass from taking on the final boss.

It was partly due to the difficulty, but primarily because they couldn't get all the glitches fixed in time for the game's release. And I'm pretty sure Stormy Ascent is shorter than Sunset Vista.
Andy Gavin once said they created Castle Machinery at the last minute to replace Stormy Ascent because of its difficulty. Honestly, both Sunset Vista and The High Road are harder imo.
The old music was so much better, also the dark gritty look made this game alot more creepy which I liked. It's weird that the animation of the scientist throwing the test tube is better in the original than in the remake.
They were actually Cortex tokens as this level was meant for the second key and not Jaws of Darkness. This level was also meant to be the last level before The Great Hall and the Cortex battle, not The Lab.

Stormy Ascent is supposed to be the penultimate level before Dr Neo Cortex but due to its immense difficulty and long level, Naughty Dog removed it and replaced with The Lab and The Great Hall.
It actually makes things clearer for me that there were unused levels. I noticed when I first played that there were a few levels with a theme that you only saw once, while most of them had theme repeats (e.g. boulders/boulderdash, hog wild/whole hog, heavy machinery/castle machinery etc.). I realize that doesn't account for all the one shot levels like Generator Room, but these prototype levels cover some of them. Here we of course have the accompanying level to Slippery Climb. Cool stuff.
stormy ascent, the level that was considered "the hardest level in crash bandicoot history" up untill the release of crash 4 it's about time. now it lost this title to some levels that competes to get the title like: Run it bayou, Bears repeating, crash landed, food run, rush hour, toxic caves, cortex castle, seeing double, and others.
Maybe practicing wouldn't hurt you and finally you could've beaten these levels. There are even checkpoints, the game is for pros and casuals. Don't need to collect all boxes until you learn everything.
lol, true, i remember getting like 3 or 4 game overs on Slippery Climb, and once i finally beat it, it's followed by Lights Out, and i couldn't save between the 2 levels, i got a game over there and i rage quit
I bet you $50 they'll make it way easy in the remake, just like they did with hog wild and bone yard and many other levels. The era of challenging platformers is over since the 90s..
This level is similar to the 'Slippery Climb' map, which made it into the game. When I was a kid me and my best friends failed to beat that level... Eventually we lost contact, only to meet again at highschool, 8 years later. We decided to try and beat the game once and for all, which we did! Good times. We stil talk to this day.
The tokens are Cortex's. If you press "triangle", you'll see a blurry token on the bottom-right side of the screen, just where the Cortex token are usually (Tawna's are on the bottom-left, and Brio's on the bottom-middle). So probably this level had the bonus round to get the second key (the one that unlocks Flumbing in the Dark), but was moved to Jaws of Darkness instead.
I'm disappointed they decided to get rid of this level. It looks great, and had some creative ideas implemented that seemed a bit unique to this level. They got rid of it for being "too hard" but it doesn't look terribly difficult, although a bit challenging.
The level is in the PS3 port of the game- I believe it's a Cortex Castle level, just before the N Brio fight. I can confirm it is NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE, far harder than it looks.
The digital download version of Crash Bandicoot is literally the same thing as the PS1 copy. I wouldn't even classify that as a PS3 port. It's basically just a digital copy of the original PS1 game.(You can also use that same copy for the PSP/PS Vita/PS TV).
Slippery Climb was one level i hated the most in all of Crash games and am STILL stuck on that level till this day. Thank god they didn't include this second more harder version of that level.
Jeez, I couldn't imagine trying to get the clear gem on this level in the original crash bandicoot if I had a game shark, because not only is it the hardest level in the game, but you would also have to not die ONCE. I tried this level in the N' Sane Trilogy with 99 lives, and left with 30 lives. Who ever made this video is a friggin legend.
Gentle reminder that if this was included in the original game, then to get the gem (and to complete the game 100%), you would need to collect every single box in a single run without dying once.
What I think happened was some of the developers complained about the level having no checkpoints for as long as it is and it's really, really difficult for a 7-year olds to even get the gem, let alone completing the damn level. So they ultimately scrapped the level and replaced it with Fumbling in the Dark, and I don't think many young kids actually wanna HAVE to beat Stormy Ascent.
Brandyn Vanover They could have put it as a Easter Egg not something mandatory. There's always those few, young kids like I was who were crazy enough to want to play it.
I am so excited for these games to be remade. I hope they fix the problems with the save system this game has though. And some levels are too difficult. I want them to keep the feel of the original game without being afraid to improve things.
Well, your wish has been granted. The remade Crash trilogy (titled N-Sane) confirms that Crash 1 will get a proper save system in addition to the Time Trials being carried over to that (and Crash 2).
You're thinking of a *similar* level called Slippery Climb. Many of the Crash 1 levels came in pairs - similar textures and styles, but one was harder than the other. Think Sunset Vista and the Lost City, or Lights Out vs Fumbling in the Dark. This is just the 'evil twin' of Slippery Climb.
@FunkyMonkMan Jaws of Darkness or that level with the green gem with the same theme as Sunset Vista. Sunset Vista is actually pretty simple imo. Cold Hard Crash and Future Frenzy are also pretty easy levels. The levels that aren't considered hard by the common Crash audience may sometimes be considered my hardest levels.
@auksan Hm, I think it might have been intended to come before Castle Machinery. There's an awfully long path in between it and Jaws of Darkness, and it consists of a giant climb. Perhaps this is that climb?
It's....beautiful o-o And i don't think it's really THAT hard to even have it removed. Sure, it looks very difficult and you'll surely die several times, but with Sunset Vista, Slippery Climb, and High Road, it fits perfectly for the game. It's mostly a matter of memorizing the level and timing your jumps correctly :P
It's not unused anymore. It's in the Switch version of the game. After finally playing this monster for myself I can sort of see why it went unused. Evil EVIL stage. It's even difficult by the first game standards and the first game is hard as balls especially if you are going for all the gems and keys.
10% of comments saying this better be in the remakes. 20% saying that this level is way too hard. 50% NAH, THIS LOOKS WAAAYYY TOO EASY FOR ME. GIT GUD 15% is this slippery climb? 5% he missed the life at the end.
You know, maybe the video just makes it seem that way, but this really doesn't seem that bad to me. It looks hard, but not "don't even include in the game" hard. EDIT: This comment did not age well.
+jakesaysknee It IS hard. If this level is supposed to be the hard counterpart of Slippery climb then i do not want to try. Indeed it looks easy on the video but believe me, the controls aren't that easy, and the timings for the jumps were horrible enough on Slippery climb. What is insane is not finishing the level, but getting the gem : yes, maybe they could have let this level somewhere in the game as a bonus, but even so, the gem would have been extremely hard to get. (by the way, i HATE Slippery climb with a burning passion :D )
believe me, you have no idea how hard it is... watching someone who already mastered something gives no notion of the actual challenge... example would be watching someone juggle three balls in the air. looks easy, huh?
idk why but my gameshark only lets me enter the top row when entering a code. IDK WHAT TO DO I NEED TO PLAY THIS LEVEL! SOMEONE HELP OUT A FELLWO CRASH FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And this drives home my biggest problem with the first Crash Bandicoot: levels that go on longer than necessary. With this game's ridiculous saving system and being required to "no-death" every level for 100%, the length of some of the later levels is just a real pain.
The HD version is finally out and I have played it! Watch the video here:

Jeez, I couldn't imagine trying to get the clear gem on this level in the original crash bandicoot if I had a game shark, because not only is it the hardest level in the game, but you would also have to not die ONCE. I tried this level in the N' Sane Trilogy with 99 lives, and left with 30 lives. Who ever made this video is a friggin legend.
That would of been Jason Rubin and andy Gavin.
Ad showing Crash N sane on a Crash video? Advertising done right.
Gentle reminder that if this was included in the original game, then to get the gem (and to complete the game 100%), you would need to collect every single box in a single run without dying once.
WOW brings back good memories! If Naughty Dog ever remakes this game they should incorporate these lost levels!
+zodiac909 Pls some Crash Fans. Learn making Games and Create a Developer Studio AND remake this.
Imperial Yama haha
Imperial Yama It's getting remade!!
The lost levels are gonna be DLC
What I think happened was some of the developers complained about the level having no checkpoints for as long as it is and it's really, really difficult for a 7-year olds to even get the gem, let alone completing the damn level. So they ultimately scrapped the level and replaced it with Fumbling in the Dark, and I don't think many young kids actually wanna HAVE to beat Stormy Ascent.
Brandyn Vanover
They could have put it as a Easter Egg not something mandatory. There's always those few, young kids like I was who were crazy enough to want to play it.
How u only get hit once?!? Brain not function no more ...
brain.exe has stopped working
Mason A. the spikes must have hit since the bird was too low.
Umm yeah.... FUCK this. Would have for sure made me ragequit and never return to that game trying to get the gem in here.
He's talking about if the level was ever actually included.
I came here after they announced the DLC.
Well, this made me quite nervous.
@auksan Hm, I think it might have been intended to come before Castle Machinery. There's an awfully long path in between it and Jaws of Darkness, and it consists of a giant climb. Perhaps this is that climb?
That stage was removed from the game because of its extreme difficulty?
They should have put it in the after story section with the rest of that stuff.
0:01 why is the logo a slab of ribs from The Flintstones 🤔
Who's watching this after the DLC for N-Sane Trilogy came out?
There are some good details used in this level for the original like the rain and thunder and the water dripping off things
It's....beautiful o-o
And i don't think it's really THAT hard to even have it removed.
Actually it can be accessible on the original crash bandicoot if you have a gameshark for the ps1
10% of comments saying this better be in the remakes.
20% saying that this level is way too hard.
50% NAH, THIS LOOKS WAAAYYY TOO EASY FOR ME. GIT GUD
15% is this slippery climb?
5% he missed the life at the end.
F me good to see this guy still around - remember watching these vids in 2010-11
2:40 Now THAT would be a bullshit jump
my goodness, now its out, how time flies
Someone's been practicing...
that music plays with your mind. that makes a difference while playing it!
You know, maybe the video just makes it seem that way, but this really doesn't seem that bad to me. It looks hard, but not "don't even include in the game" hard.
EDIT: This comment did not age well.
+jakesaysknee Yeah im bit surprised its cosindered too hard. If u can beat Slippery Climb, u can beat that one i think
You have to consider the target audience for the game too.
SamusSX117 You're just bad at the game, dude!
believe me, you have no idea how hard it is... watching someone who already mastered something gives no notion of the actual challenge...
example would be watching someone juggle three balls in the air. looks easy, huh?
Ci credi che mi viene il magone solo a guardarlo, avendolo fatto.
Molto bravo.
50 attempts?? Holy crap. You, sir, have earned my eternal respect.
Sunset Vista Prototype Version It's a Nightmare
whoever made that iso is a pure genius every game minus the party games i got all 3 alone as well as compilation
Damnit, now I need to get a PS1 gameshark!
+BigHead2615 I found one in my storage building without even knowing i had one. xD
idk why but my gameshark only lets me enter the top row when entering a code. IDK WHAT TO DO I NEED TO PLAY THIS LEVEL! SOMEONE HELP OUT A FELLWO CRASH FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
***** I will but first, calm the fuck down.
DonutMonkey (GoldMario5)(deep breathe)...okay....im calm....
***** I have no idea, i just wanted you to cool it.
Try and look up a tutorial on PS1 Gamesharks, or just use an emulator.
Always thought it was odd there was only on "castle wall" type level.
damn, looks very hard
And this drives home my biggest problem with the first Crash Bandicoot: levels that go on longer than necessary. With this game's ridiculous saving system and being required to "no-death" every level for 100%, the length of some of the later levels is just a real pain.
