We stay in tents in the yard of a couple in their 80’s. They stay in their house during rally and host us. Always several fresh pots of coffee & homemade breakfast breads every morning. They are family to us. It would be sad without them there.
that's cool. The last couple of times I have been to that area I tent camp just outside of the badlands. I make a run to Wall drug for my 5 cent coffee in the mornings and a buffalo burger in the evening
I'm a disabled Vietnam vet who still rides my Harley yet never been to Sturgis! I want to thank all you guys who put this together! It's still a dream I have!

Don't own one, or ride 2up, but thanks to you all I can still enjoy the gorgeous sceneries, the restaurants, bikers you meet, barhopping (even though I already drank way more than my share when I was younger so don't drink, and more! Keep it up please!!!
Coming to sturgis just before the rally gets you to miss the crowds, rooms less expensive. You only miss the concerts. And you can still get the obligatory 20 lbs of t-shirts. We have hosted the same tenters in our yard over 20 yrs now, they become visiting family. Coffee always on, the wife likes to cook a family style meal once during the week for the crew.
It was definitely cool without the crowds! We'll be back in a few weeks for the rally itself. Pretty awesome you've had tenters in your yard for over 20 years! That must be a great experience hearing all of the stories and catching up every year. Thanks for watching👍

Me n some boys rode to Deadwood 3 years ago, stayed at the Deadwood Mountain Grand for 3 days (pre-covid bs), mid July. The only time to see the sights (Monuments/backroads etc) is anytime except Sturgis time. Ya still gotta put up with the usual tourists in their cages, but still good. Nice video BTW!
If you guys like to challenge yourself and check your edges, and see parts of America that are lost gems, have you looked into the Hoka Hey challenge? 10 out of 10 would recommend.

I planned going this year but a close family friend lost their house to a fire at the beginning of the year. We let them stay with us until they got the house finished. Would have been my first time going. Planning for next year. I didn't get to save enough this time to really have a good time at Sturgis. Next year will be epic.

I was there in 1995, not in to large crowds anymore. I would like to ride back about a week prior to the rally. I think maybe there would be some people there setting up and all the bars might be open but it wouldn't be wall to wall people.
Not a bad plan! Definitely more open in the weeks before rally. This was filmed the last week of May and most places were open in Deadwood, but more was shut down in Sturgis

Why do people like you keep spewing misinformation about putting both feet down when coming to a stop. There is no law stating that, in fact there isn't a law stating you have to put any feet down.
We were told that 8 years ago and every year since. We have come to learn that no, you don’t have to put both down. The Spewing is and was unintentional my friend. Cheers!
Wow ya it looks so different with no one there strange we had a small group together and went to Gettysburg PA for 4 days awesome trip alot of history about a 5.5 hours trip for us south of us
Rally doesn't start for another 15 days or some shit. Most people can't take 3-4 weeks off for the rally. Kind of a misleading headline. However it's good to get the locals perspective on Sturgis before the rally. You guys must be business owners with trusted employees to take that much time off.
Riding to Sturgis IN 2022. We'll be back for a few days for the actual rally itself , but spent 3-4 days in the Black Hills capturing the local's perspectives and history along the way. There's some more informative vids in the series with history and things to do etc. Business owners, yes. But us 3 are the only employees, so just a little catch up when we get back. This is my first time seeing that road king. That thing is sick!!! I was just there a week ago. Went to one eyed jacks, full throttle, and knuckles. All empty but had to stop anyways.

Sturgis is on a scale 10,000x larger than going down Mulholland Highway On Any Sunday to The Rock Store, in Malibu / Los Angeles. I did Sturgis /Black Hills for 5 days in late July, they were just starting to set up for the main event. Even when empty, with dinner at The Knuckle Saloon, Sturgis is a charming little town in a stunningly gorgeous setting next to the Black Hills. Say hi! to my buddy Mark over at The Custom Shop, from Geoffrey Giraffe. Love your Tulane Life stuff. I know, sounds Univerisity stuff down in New Orleans !
Always a great time in the Black Hills! This video was filmed in May when we went without the rally, and we just got back yesterday from a 3,300 mile round trip out to the 2022 Rally and had a blast. Tons and tons of bikes on the road and no shortage of smiles to match. Thanks for watching!! Mark at the Custom Shop painted Josh's green fairing on the road king! He's a great dude!
@@2LaneLife Visited him yesterday, we looked at many of his pictures on his computer from back in the day. Pictures of Lance's' Black and Orange "Thrashin' " tank after color sanding, rub and a buff were in there, too. It was ironic, because when i saw the tank on Lance's bike in a Thrashin' video, the stylized lettering that Mark does was very apparent. Mark does excellent work, don't know if you've seen his "Frewily" Chevy in orange with flames, tubbed wheel well in the rear, etc, blown engine. Your video Editor is doing you a solid, with their work here on UA-cam. Doesn't matter if you have your Pilot's license or Motorcycle license, by the time you're our age, you know where to go to Pub and Grub. Thanks for the pointers along the way!

YOU HEARD WRONG. IT'S SIMPLY A LITTLE COMMUNITY, THAT CAN BE SIMPLY CONSIDERED A TOURIST TRAP. AN OLD SAYING WITHIN THE COMMUNITY IS "LEAVE YOUR MONEY AND HEAD OUT OF TOWN".
I was there last week with a buddy who had never been to that area. This was my third time. We rode from Ohio. He's 66 years old and rode his 2001 heritage softail. His favorite road was 14a (spearfish canyon). We rode it three times over the week that we were there. He wanted to do it again but I had to remind him that there are lots more roads we need to hit. He couldn't believe how rugged the bad lands were. It was cool to see and hear his response to the sights that we saw. I was able to hit some roads that I hadn't been on before too. One evening we ate dinner at the Boar's nest near Deadwood. Looking out over their railing down into the creek and up the mountain side was very cool. At 11.30 if you make a right I believe Legend suspension is down that road about a half mile or so. As usual you put out another top-notch video.
Good stuff! Sounds like you guys had a great trip. Spearfish Canyon is always cool to see. We end up riding back and forth quite a bit when we're in the area. We've yet top ride the Badlands, and hope to make it out there sooner or later. Yup, Legend suspension is right in town. We'll be there during the rally for another Meet n Greet. Very cool that you guys rode out from Ohio! My wife and I rode out from Ohio last year the week before the rally on my 2012 Heritage. My third time riding out, her first. Stayed four nights in Rapid City at the Holiday Inn Express off 90 where breakfast was included (helpful for anyone on a budget) , and also laundry facilities, which is VERY handy if you're riding two-up from that kind of distance! LOL! We rode for three days then headed back home for her to get back to work. Anyone who wants to get the feel of the rally withOUT the crowds, going the week prior is a suggestion, because the vendors are set up early and you get the rally excitement with maybe a half of the people.
@@liftbig03 good suggestions. I passed through there last year about a week before the rally and I couldn't believe how many bikes, tents, campers were there already. Another tip is to bring old clothes you don't want anymore. Wear them for a few days then throw them away. That's what I usually do. "See ya down the Road"
Well my wife and I have decided to go to deadwood and all the surrounding area at the end of Aug./Labor day weekend. Do you guys recommend a place to stay in or near deadwood. Thxs
Your audio and cameras are excellent! Sturgis is such a cool little town. Personally, I've never been there outside of the rally, and for me, I think it would be a letdown. I'm not a huge party guy, but I love seeing everyone have a good time and I enjoy the energy of being around so many fellow enthusiasts. Also, where do you keep your hat when you're riding? I never seem to have enough room to pack mine.

Thanks for the video I am 66 years old and have a 04 FJR 1300 Yamaha sport tourer. This video has inspired me to make it out to Sturgis a week before it starts for 2023. I live in Florida and have been to Daytona and Octoberfest bike week 3 or 4 times. I have read you have to book a room a year in advance to stay up there right?
You got it. We don’t book a year in advance but we also look for houses vs hotels. We like the camaraderie with the guys and a bbq for a few of the nights. You should see the rally at least once in your lifetime. Shit show for sure!
I have property and live in the Black Hills of South Dakota, some beautiful riding for sure. Especially when the rally isn't going on. I like to ride into town for the rally at least 1 time.
It was definitely incredible riding out there with the roads wide open! We make it out every year for the rally, but will likely ride out multiple times a year now after exploring without the rally going on. When I was there without the rally, I could smell gas in the trees while I rode iron mountain. Just imagine how many bikes had to b there to make that gas smell last!

My grandpa lived on Main Street Spearfish. He had an alley he rented out to A group of doctors and nurses from Rochester MN for years. They would park their camper and shower in his basement. He made pancakes everyday of the rally for all the bikers to stop by his church. I love your videos. I live in Sioux Falls and try to get to the rally when I can.

That's a great time. There may be some larger venders there prepping to set up for the rally, and some early campers there, but no crowds or anything. This trip was filmed at the end of May for perspective.

Went a week early last year definitely the best time to ride is before all the cops are shipped in and the non riders get on the roads and slow everything down. You can do a lot of the rides if not all before the crowds come in.
Me and my 13yo son rode from Valdosta Ga to Sturgis, Deadwood and Lead South Dakota in june it was beautiful several of the bars and shops in Sturgis was open. Now I can't wait to make the trip again but actually go to the rally oh yea round trip we did 4158miles in 8 days

Yup, this was filmed in May. We rode out for the rally last week and there were tons of bikes of course.
Sturgis is on a scale 10,000x larger than going down Mulholland Highway On Any Sunday to The Rock Store, in Malibu / Los Angeles. I did Sturgis /Black Hills for 5 days in late July, they were just starting to set up for the main event. Even when empty, with dinner at The Knuckle Saloon, Sturgis is a charming little town in a stunningly gorgeous setting next to the Black Hills. Say hi! to my buddy Mark over at The Custom Shop, from Geoffrey Giraffe. Love your Tulane Life stuff. I know, sounds Univerisity stuff down in New Orleans !
Always a great time in the Black Hills! This video was filmed in May when we went without the rally, and we just got back yesterday from a 3,300 mile round trip out to the 2022 Rally and had a blast. Tons and tons of bikes on the road and no shortage of smiles to match. Thanks for watching!! Mark at the Custom Shop painted Josh's green fairing on the road king! He's a great dude!
@@2LaneLife Visited him yesterday, we looked at many of his pictures on his computer from back in the day. Pictures of Lance's' Black and Orange "Thrashin' " tank after color sanding, rub and a buff were in there, too. It was ironic, because when i saw the tank on Lance's bike in a Thrashin' video, the stylized lettering that Mark does was very apparent. Mark does excellent work, don't know if you've seen his "Frewily" Chevy in orange with flames, tubbed wheel well in the rear, etc, blown engine. Your video Editor is doing you a solid, with their work here on UA-cam. Doesn't matter if you have your Pilot's license or Motorcycle license, by the time you're our age, you know where to go to Pub and Grub. Thanks for the pointers along the way!
We were there in 2014 and it was packed...I did video's of Sturgis then...The Deadwood and the canyon ride was awesome...

It doesn’t officially start for until August 5th….LOL….shocking it wouldn’t be crowded (yawn!!!!). It’s one of the best riding areas in the world.
Yawn….duh Dan. Read the description, Sturgis with no rally. We are showing people what it’s like pre-rally. Move on. We know when it starts we head there tomorrow. Clueless…… we can agree on one thing, it is one of the best place to ride and even better without the Rally.

YOU HEARD WRONG. IT'S SIMPLY A LITTLE COMMUNITY, THAT CAN BE SIMPLY CONSIDERED A TOURIST TRAP. AN OLD SAYING WITHIN THE COMMUNITY IS "LEAVE YOUR MONEY AND HEAD OUT OF TOWN".
I was there last week with a buddy who had never been to that area. This was my third time. We rode from Ohio. He's 66 years old and rode his 2001 heritage softail. His favorite road was 14a (spearfish canyon). We rode it three times over the week that we were there. He wanted to do it again but I had to remind him that there are lots more roads we need to hit. He couldn't believe how rugged the bad lands were. It was cool to see and hear his response to the sights that we saw. I was able to hit some roads that I hadn't been on before too. One evening we ate dinner at the Boar's nest near Deadwood. Looking out over their railing down into the creek and up the mountain side was very cool. At 11.30 if you make a right I believe Legend suspension is down that road about a half mile or so. As usual you put out another top-notch video.
Good stuff! Sounds like you guys had a great trip. Spearfish Canyon is always cool to see. We end up riding back and forth quite a bit when we're in the area. We've yet top ride the Badlands, and hope to make it out there sooner or later. Yup, Legend suspension is right in town. We'll be there during the rally for another Meet n Greet. Very cool that you guys rode out from Ohio! My wife and I rode out from Ohio last year the week before the rally on my 2012 Heritage. My third time riding out, her first. Stayed four nights in Rapid City at the Holiday Inn Express off 90 where breakfast was included (helpful for anyone on a budget) , and also laundry facilities, which is VERY handy if you're riding two-up from that kind of distance! LOL! We rode for three days then headed back home for her to get back to work. Anyone who wants to get the feel of the rally withOUT the crowds, going the week prior is a suggestion, because the vendors are set up early and you get the rally excitement with maybe a half of the people.
@@liftbig03 good suggestions. I passed through there last year about a week before the rally and I couldn't believe how many bikes, tents, campers were there already. Another tip is to bring old clothes you don't want anymore. Wear them for a few days then throw them away. That's what I usually do. "See ya down the Road"

Your audio and cameras are excellent! Sturgis is such a cool little town. Personally, I've never been there outside of the rally, and for me, I think it would be a letdown. I'm not a huge party guy, but I love seeing everyone have a good time and I enjoy the energy of being around so many fellow enthusiasts.
Also, where do you keep your hat when you're riding? I never seem to have enough room to pack mine.

Thanks for the video I am 66 years old and have a 04 FJR 1300 Yamaha sport tourer. This video has inspired me to make it out to Sturgis a week before it starts for 2023. I live in Florida and have been to Daytona and Octoberfest bike week 3 or 4 times. I have read you have to book a room a year in advance to stay up there right?
You got it. We don’t book a year in advance but we also look for houses vs hotels. We like the camaraderie with the guys and a bbq for a few of the nights. You should see the rally at least once in your lifetime. Shit show for sure!
I have property and live in the Black Hills of South Dakota, some beautiful riding for sure. Especially when the rally isn't going on. I like to ride into town for the rally at least 1 time.
It was definitely incredible riding out there with the roads wide open! We make it out every year for the rally, but will likely ride out multiple times a year now after exploring without the rally going on. When I was there without the rally, I could smell gas in the trees while I rode iron mountain. Just imagine how many bikes had to b there to make that gas smell last!

My grandpa lived on Main Street Spearfish. He had an alley he rented out to A group of doctors and nurses from Rochester MN for years. They would park their camper and shower in his basement. He made pancakes everyday of the rally for all the bikers to stop by his church. I love your videos. I live in Sioux Falls and try to get to the rally when I can.

We have 6.5" pullback risers on the road glides and 9.5" pullback risers on the road king 👍
If you have a suicide clutch do you need to put it in neutral and put both feet down at the stop signs?
We've had a few people reach out and say the two feet down thing is a myth. If ya have a suicide shifter, Whatever is safest is probably your best bet 👍

The rally is an experience. If you are a new rider, do as they just did. Come in the off season. Winding mountain roads are best with little traffic.

That's a great time. There may be some larger venders there prepping to set up for the rally, and some early campers there, but no crowds or anything. This trip was filmed at the end of May for perspective.

Went a week early last year definitely the best time to ride is before all the cops are shipped in and the non riders get on the roads and slow everything down. You can do a lot of the rides if not all before the crowds come in.
It was way different without all the bikes. Sounds like you have a routine and plan that works for you! 👍👍
Me and my 13yo son rode from Valdosta Ga to Sturgis, Deadwood and Lead South Dakota in june it was beautiful several of the bars and shops in Sturgis was open. Now I can't wait to make the trip again but actually go to the rally oh yea round trip we did 4158miles in 8 days
