Loved the grunt and the “Tiger like” fist pump after your last pure 7 iron strike! I can’t wait to try these irons and compare the graphite versus steel shaft options. I hope the black finish holds up as these are gorgeous irons and appear to frame the ball beautifully . Great review Andrew!
As always, nicely done ! Since it seems at 72+ I am loosing ball speed every time I tee it up, it's great to see how a club performs at different speeds. Appreciate the info ! Thanks :)
Irons don"t usually excite me but these definitely do. What a great looking set of irons. I like the way they seem to be super game improvement and powerful mixed in with the awesome looks. I agree with you on the weight though. It should have been black as well. There is a lot to like about these irons. Ping has really made some great stuff . I am going to have to go to my fitters and try them again today at some point. Stay well my friend!
Visually its a nice looking club, I love the black/grey/black finish on the face and a big improvement on the looks of the G700. With the black graphite shaft, it looks mint! Just for info; PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition. It's a vacuum coating technique that deposits a thin film onto metals & ceramics. It's been used in the machine tool industry for years to enhance the performance of cutting tools. Dependant upon the technique used it can either produce a black or gold finish that can be translucent or opaque. As it is a very thin film coating it shouldn't chip or scuff like some other coatings that have been used on clubs in the past.
@@andrewainsworth497 👍my guess is that as PING are essentially a machining shop they will have come across PVD coated machine tools and transferred the technique to their clubs. It's worth a bet that in future PVD coatings and similar techniques will become commonplace, such as Mizuno's Blue wedges.
Great review Andrew very happy you done a demo wiv a slower swing speed I,m around 82mph on a 7 iron currently using g400 I find them quite firm off the face and starting to lose a bit distance due to age/physical shape would you recommend these for a let,s day more senior golfer how,d you find the feel as well cheers dean
Andrew another great review will be interested when you do the Titleist T400 irons. All very expensive though do they include smelling salts at time of purchase?
Very nice review Andrew. Thank you. I have a question that you probably know the answer to. When is Ping coming out with their new woods for 2020 ? Will they be called G 710 ? Thank you Andrew. Joe
Hi Joseph, Ping keep these things very much a secret. I am working on the normal product cycle that around August maybe the new launch date. It may however get pushed back due to what is happening at the moment. That is my thinking and not something I have heard from Ping.
@@andrewainsworth497 That being said I am very happy with my set of Ping G 410 Woods and will not be changing out of those. They have really helped me on the golf course. I have the 3,5,7 and 9 in them. I hit them extremely well and have truly been a major game changer for me. The have tended to get me either on the green or right in front of it in two shots. :) Great stuff. :) Joe
Great review thinking of getting these clubs so the difference swing speed review really helped, not like the other reviews which forget about the senior golfer. Many thanks 😉
Hi Leonard, yes sometimes I may use the DNA to steer me in the right direction. Ping don't offer as many shaft options as Mizuno so often the decision is easier. All the best Andrew
Thanks Andrew, nice review. I do worry about what the club will look like after a few months of wear and tear. At about a grand for a six piece set they are too expensive to look crap after a few months. I paid £75 per club for my Ping G's about 4 years ago, now these are more than double the price. Personally I can't see how Ping can justify the price hike.I also note in your video the swing weights were quite low e.g. 4-8i C9. Is that because of the lightweight graphite shaft?
Hi Ray, is a big price tag agreed. Time will tell on how they wear. Yes the swing weight was down to the light weight graphite shaft. Best regards Andrew
In days of old we would say that the shaft is of greatest importance but are we now at a place where head design is approaching similar levels of importance?
Great stuff as usual mate. I'm still playing benross htx type r irons I've found the ball has much more affect on my game than any club's. Wish I would have known that 15 years ago i would have saved a bloody fortune😁. Will you be reviewing the new bridgestone balls? Now they do look interesting.
Hi, Unfortunately not stocking the Bridgestone balls this year so probably. Always skeptical that a ball will change/improve much from year to year. New packaging sometimes is the only change I see !! All the best Andrew
PVD stands for Physical Vapor Deposition. PVD Coating refers to a variety of thin film deposition techniques where a solid material is vaporized in a vacuum environment and deposited on substrates as a pure material or alloy composition coating. Whatever that means!! Nice club to hit though.
@@andrewainsworth497 If it's anything like the finish on the G 700's then it won't last to long, the finish on the G 700's was terrible, not good enough for the $ they charge.
Yes the finish hopefully will last, the finish on the G400 was prone to early wear, and looked poor after a short time in the bag. Let's wait and see. Thanks for the comments. Andrew
I'm a 73 year old 5 handicapper. My lovely, no offset, Mizuno forged blades with a quality regular steel shaft are beginning to get a little tough to handle. So I recently gave a G710 7 iron a significant test on Trackman at my local retailer. First of all, a 15/20 yard distance gain was nice but no real surprise as my 7 iron has 4.5 more degrees of loft and less tech of course! The major difference was dispersion. Even when trying to hit it out of the bottom, heel & toe, the accuracy & length were impressively consistent. Of course, the feel is not as buttery soft as my Mizunos. However, Ping have made an excellent job of creating good feel & impact noise with their maraging steel face technology and internal sound deadening. As a result, I felt that the sound and feel were more than acceptable. Certainly a lot better than other game improvement irons out there. After some careful testing, the best shaft for my game at the moment was the Recoil regular graphite. However, there was very little difference between that and the A flex shaft. In fact, the Recoil A delivered similar distance to the R shaft from a deliberately slower swing speed. Dispersion was identical too. At my age, my swing will only get slower so that's why I was recommended, and chose, the A shaft. Ping's stock Alta Distanza is probably suitable for a limited number of golfers. I would recommend paying the £10/ club premium for one of their higher quality shafts. The net result of my testing session was that I ordered a set of 7 irons - 5 to UW. I already have an "old friend" SW I want to continue with. And, at the other end of the bag, an even "older friend" 3 iron that will skip in nicely between the G710 5 iron & my gorgeous G400 5 wood. In summary, I'm buying a set of irons that will be accurate & forgiving, that are longer (sort of), that will serve me well for many years and that are much lighter to lug around! Also, as it's now several months since launch, some price discounting is now available. By the way, they look pretty gorgeous too, for now at least. The black coating is not only smart, it also takes away some of the typical chunkiness associated with game improvement irons. The grey face with the bottom white line also frames the ball & helps aiming too. Who knows how long the black coating will last. Probably not that long, but generally only on the soles and I'm not looking there when playing a shot! Anyone got any experience of wear? Mind you, I've heard they can be re-coated. Since I have to get my forged irons checked for lofts & lies twice a season anyway, a potential re-coating of some of the G710s may be worth considering. So, there you go. A view of these clubs from a senior golfer. I hope, that other seniors find this useful although a lot of what I've said here applies to all golfers.
