@@Hikaholics 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Great info guys!! I’m doing it this June and I’m so excited!
Woooooo exiting! Enjoy! let us know if we can help you with anything
I did it in 2012.
1,2) Preparation/Training: Here in North Carolina, US, one TMB friend and I prepped by Often repeat-hiking up and down my office's 13-floor parking garage staircase, 2 steps at a time. Less than 100 m above sea level, but In VERY hot humid weather. [Then we went to the nearest pub and practiced drinking Belgian Ales XD.]
He pre-reserved refugios by e-mail, which was not always reliable. I hear that it is much more tight/inflexible planning, in the 2020s
3) Foot wear: I wore a heavy pair of Scarpa Italian-made boots that a friend donated (his feet were too wide for them). But my friend Robert wore a pair of trail-runners, which are fine except in heavy rain or on very loose, rocky surfaces, where ankle support is needed. Last day we got SOAKED; My FEET were Dry :)
4) Trekking Poles: We all brought "high-end" ones, which were locked at length by a Latch system, not the cheaper "twist" system. On our flight to/from Europe, we had to baggage-check our hiking poles (all stuffed into a cardboard map tube), since they were considered "potential (stabbing) Weapons". But our 15-20 lb/6-9 kilo rucksacks easily fit into the overhead compartments on the airliners, which was super-convenient.
5) Pack Contents:
MERINO WOOL was Awesome ! Two boxer-briefs and two tee shirts of each. One set for hiking, and one for after evening shower, and sink-washing the first set to dry overnight.
Fleece long-sleeve shirt and adjustable (short/long) hiking pants (esp in Italy, where it is considered polite to wear Long Pants around town during the evening: Blend In).
Compressible (pint-sized) down/synthetic jacket/vest, for unexpected cold.
GOOD Rain Jacket (breathable, so one does not "sauna" one's self, hiking in fog/rain - oh, who am I kidding XD).
Sleeping Bag LINER: The refuge bunks typically have mattresses with Duvets/Comforters, so all you need is that light/thin mummy "wraparound".
Food: Lunch; High-calorie Snacks . "Emergency Sanitation Packet" for on (OFF) trail - just in case. Mini-Toiletries.
6) Sunscreen and WIDE-brimmed Hat, Sunglasses, electrolyte/powdered drink mixes.
[Our favorite refrain on the TMB: "ANNNNNd we're going UP AGAIN...!" XD]
Thanks for the big comment haha! Think a lot of people will benefit from your experience as well, so thank you! Would you change anything in your set up if you would hike the tmb again?
@@Hikaholics Did it in September, a couple of weeks before the trekking Refuges (I'm told) would shut down for the Winter. I don't eat beef or pork, and was hoping for better menu options at the refuges. Maybe that's a late-in-the-season (supply) thing. I would also have opted for lighter (but still ankle-supporting) boots. And better rain gear (back then, I had a Marmot Precip).
I took French in High School (2 yrs) and studied/refreshed like hell before the trip.
But Hit The Wall, trying to converse there XD. That said: a few basic polite phrases help. And many/most Continental Europeans are multilingual (envious !). So there were very few language barriers (mainly in Italy).
These are great tips! We chose to have a company book our accommodations, a mix of in town and mountain huts, but hiked on our own. It was just too daunting to try to book everything. Love the forever pace, great description - I have that down, I'm well into my 60s and some people I have hiked with just don't understand why I never need a break to catch my breath - years of experience at knowing just how hard I can hike and not get winded.
We carried too much weight. Was ok, but not ideal. We had everything we needed for a two week vacation including several days in Geneva with us at all times. We did another similar hike last year and decided to just have a company transfer our bags each day, and just carried a minimal amount each day - big difference!
The biggest mistake on the TMB is we found some of the route finding challenging and got off track a couple of times. Never a serious problem but we found our maps and guide book were not enough. If I were to do it again, I would download, or create my own, digital maps to use in a phone app.
For what is worth, saw some people in the mountain huts with the worst blisters I have ever seen in my life! Just horrible. So not only break-in your shoes, but learn how to treat blisters and carry the medical supplies you need, just in case!
Over all the TMB was great, and again, your tips are excellent!
This is so good you guys! Thank you!
Our pleasure!
Great tips 👍 🏔
Thanks 👍❤️
Good one. Thanks a lot. Have a wonderful weekend.
Thank you! Hope you are having a great weekend as well ⛰
Thanks!
Thank you Billy! Much appreciated 🙏 Planning to hike the TMB as well?
Thanks for the tip
You are welcome!
Thank you for such a great video! This is my first ever hike, I am 63 yr (a mom), though very active (runner, walker, kayaker, plain ol having to be very physical daily). My neighbor told me just yesterday I work harder than 10 men put together.....so I hope this is going to get me through the TMB with my daughter next Sept. I will be training after finishing a massive "dirt" hauling project and of course it is all uphill hauling, but once done, lots of working on strength for all parts that need it. So lets bring on snow, so I can shovel all day with my backpack on😃😃😃!!! AND the electrolyte tip, very important, I can add that in 2022, I was in the Emergency Room due to Hyponatremia, my test was one number above seizure, coma, death as I drank soooo much water, but had no electrolyte that I washed my body of sodium needed. So, super tip! Thank you again for this, I will definitely watch your other videos. Cheers!
You are welcome! Glad our videos helps you. You will love the TMB! Very wise that you are going to train! Good to avoid any injuries that could ruin your experience :(. Oh hyponatremia sounds very serious! Happy that you recovered 🙏
🏔️ Great video!!!
Thank you Rick! ⛰ Glad you liked it
⛰ Excellent tips! Thank you very much!
Thanks for watching ❤️
We're hiking the TMB in July. Great video guys!
Thank you! Hope you will enjoy the trail as much as we did
🗻 when I watch your video's I to wanna go at adventure love the outdoors thank you🙏
Super leuk te horen Frank! Blij dat je de avonturen leuk vindt om te kijken ❤️
thanks for the tips!🏔⛰
Thank you Bill!
Great video guys! I'm planning on hiking the TMB coming year, even though I'm not a beginner anymore these tips still are very useful.
And I lived the same pain you had Deen, albeit on an other trail. With lots of elevation and descents those trekking poles are a straight up blessing haha!
Keep up the good work!😁💪
Hi Mikhael. Gelukkig nieuwjaar!
🗻🏔️thanks for the tips!
Thank you Christian!
Great info you two ! I'm thinking about giving the TMB a try this coming Sept starting starting the 7th - your full video of the stages inspired me ! I'd like to book my own refuges as you did and hoping they're not all booked up already. I have a lot research to do beforehand to make sure I choose the right ones - I think I can do it, or at least I hope so. Thanks for the all the videos. Gonna hit up Patreon.✌🏻
Thanks Perk! September is really beautiful in the mountains. let us know if we can help you with anything! Speak to you on Patreon!
🏞 The insights you provide about avoiding these common mistakes are incredibly valuable, especially for those new to backpacking. It's like you've compiled a survival guide that will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable journey through those stunning landscapes. Mistake 5 hits home for me - packing light is an art, and your tips will be my guiding light. Your dedication to sharing your experiences and helping others achieve their hiking dreams is commendable. Wishing you many more exciting adventures and inspired treks ahead! ⛰🎒🌄
Thank you so much for the kind words! Wishing you many adventures and trails as well!
🥾🥾 Thank you!
Welcome 🙏
Starting on 2nd July and have 11 days to do it. Will be wild camping the whole walk. Cannot wait!
That sounds amazing!! You will love it. Enjoy this amazing trail ❤️
I'll be wild camping too. My 8 pounds will be more like 20 🙃
Arrived home yesterday. What a stunning place. I drive from the Uk and left my car for 7 days in Les Houches for free with no issues.
⛰ Thanks for the content, looking forward to our hike end of August!
Hi Charlie! Thank you for your comment. We are sure you will love to hike the TMB. It is wonderful. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us

Great review, watched like 3-4 of your videos while investigating to try to make a trip this year June 25 - July 5. I decided pretty late (this weekend) and do realise that most of the places are already booked and decided to investigate camping with personal tent. According to multiple articles on the web it seems doable since there are legal places to camp along the route. I would appreciate yo hear your opinion on camption with a tent option, do you feel like there were enough places along route?
Thank you!! We hiked the TMB at exactly the same time of year. Going with a tent is definitely an option. There are multiple campsites a long the trail and a lot of people wild camp as well during the time we were there. Bivouac is allowed in some areas (sun down to sunrise). The campsites at the hut you have to prebook if I'm correct. Hope this answers your question a little bit?
This will be my first long distance hike but I'm a little bit nervous about MISTAKE 5: packing too much. My weight is 70kg and my backpack weighs around 15kg. I got 3.3kg camping gear + 2kg food + 1kg powerbank and camera. That's already 6kg + the normal base weight. However, I'm just going to try it. If it's too heavy it will be a good lesson for my future trips 😆
So exiting! You can easily save some weight on food because there is literally places to buy food and snacks everywhere. You can also keep your camara (and tripod) in your hand while hiking, I (Deen) do that as well and it takes some weight off your back. You can also ditch some gear halfway in Courmayeur if you brought too much and collect it again after the trail.
Hope this helps? Let us know if you have more questions :)
I would personally use two poles rather than carry camera gear. To save weight you can buy a lightweight pack but lightweight gear can get expensive.
⛰ ! ! ⛺ ! ! ⛰! ! yay
Thanks Jeffrey!!
hi guys love your videos. can you mention the trail runners you used again it wasn't clear on the video which brand and also which brand of water proof sock.thanks fo the tips we are hoping to do this august 2024
Hi!!
Thank you so much for the lovely compliments.
We use the altra lone peaks as trailrunners and the waterproof socks are the ones from bridgedale called storm socks! Absolute game changers for us.
Hope you will love the trail as much as we did 😍
great thankyou for your response . we ware so excited and your videos are the best looking forward to more of your adventures @@Hikaholics
Thank you so much!! That means the world to us. ❤️❤️
Hello, could you please tell me about the alternative route to avoid the TMB ladders? Adding how much time and distance? Thanks
Hi Ricardo, think we already answered you via email. HAPPY TRAILS!!!
TMB hiking is on my bucket list.
But it is very difficult to implement the BIG challenge.
Hope you get to hike the TMB one day🙏 you can always hike sections if the challenge is too big
Your words are valuable, especially for me. I will go alone. What is the appropriate path for me so that I do not feel lonely? Thank you.
Thanks! Just follow the main trails of the TMB. You won't be alone :)
Thanks for the helpful tips! I will attempt to do the TMB in 5 days next June, which I know is still challenging being early season. Since you did it in June as well, did you have to put on crampons or spikes to go through snow patches or your Altra outsoles handled that kind of surface well enough?
P.S. Nevermind, I've just watched your TMB packlist and you explain it there 😄
🏔⛰🏔⛰🏔⛰🏔⛰
Haha thanks!! You can check trail conditions just before leaving and see if you want to bring micro spikes. But we didn’t need them in the end. Altras were perfect for us! If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Enjoy the TMB 🙏
@@Hikaholics I still have a pair of Lone Peak 5s with good thread so I'll take those. The most comfortable pair of trail runners I've worn for sure.
Great advice about electrolytes pills. I didn't knew they existed. For now I got electrolytes powder stuffed into small bags 😅
That’s just fine as well, right? As long as you bring them! They can make a big difference.
🏔Great tips. Packing a spare shoe lace / string is a good idea... (personal experience lesson)
Hi Severine! That's a great tip as well, can't image what experience that was! But hiking with a broken shoe lace, or no shoe lace at all, must be a challenge.... ⛰
@@Hikaholics There is a whole thing there with essentials to pack I think. I set off with a friend in the alps and my shoelace broke at 5 km. It was 15th August and everything is closed in the hamlet. Weirdly some people were doing road works and they were able to offer me some string. That's after my water system leaked in my bag...
@@severiner7168 Noooo! That sounds like an unfortunate series of events. But luckily you got some help. We definitely have a whole essentials bag as well with us. Like emergency blanket, extra water filter, hydration pills, mostly emergency and safety items.
@@Hikaholics yes safety and water is by far most of the weight / space and for me the extra luxury pair of socks!
I'm planning to do the TMB 16th June 2023, is this too early in the year? Will it be cold at night?
We started on the 23 of June so definitely not too early. We really like this time of year as it is not too crowded on the trail and not too hot during the day. It really depends on the weather conditions but if you are sleeping in huts you won't be cold. Hope this helps?
I started 25. June. I took 5.9R downmat and ferrino levity 02 XL.
It was total overkill for 1000m campsites. But was nice for 3 nights when I wildcamped at elevation around/over 2000m.
If you're coming with airplane(carry on luggage)then dont bring trekking poles, they might bin them at airport. Buy gas and trekking poles at decathlon chamonix. Best supermarket for the whole trail is at Les Houches.
Take dinner and breakfast at Tré-le-champ Auberge la Boërne and Refuge de la Flégère(last potable water source). Did camp outside close to flegere.
@@bcamping1 Those are some great tips!
About the trekking poles, you can also rent them in Chamonix at Snell Sports (prob also at other spots).
There are also multiple supermarkets in Courmayeur, where we bought some restock.
Kunnen jullie keer naar Aalten gaan
Hi Dean! We zijn al een keer in Aalten geweest en hebben er zelfs een video gemaakt. Je kunt 'm hier bekijken: ua-cam.com/video/vy3eaY40B3E/v-deo.html

Sorry, what's the name of the shoes? Could you put the name, please? I had problem to understand the accent in that part.
Hi!! We have the Altra Lone Peak 6's. It's a trail runner. Do you hike on trail runners?
@@Hikaholics Thank you so much! I use my trekking boot. I was thinking lately if a trail runner is a better choice for the TMB.
@@365tage9 The kind of shoes is really a personal preference. Some people hike on boots, some on trail runners.
Personally, I get pain in my shins and feet from hiking in boots. But some people love the extra support around the ankles during a hike. Best is to try a pair of trail runners for some day hikes and see how it feels, before taking them on a long distance trail like the TMB.
Not sure how to add the mountain emoji from my pc............. but here's mountain! 🙂
Haha no worries!! 🏔️

🏔Thanks for the great advice
Any time!
🏔 Thankyou. This is very valuable. Please, could you make a video of a wild camping version (tent carrying and cooking stove and sleep system version), of your video . . Tour du Mont Blanc Packlist, 2022 Gear List For Hiking The TMB Hut to Hut . Many of us wold be very interested to hear your opinions on gear weight in that respect. Thankyou.
Hi Gelert! Thank you! We would love to, however we did not camp during the TMB. We saw a lot of people do by the way. We have a Sweden series coming up where we will show our camping set up for autumn/winter camping. We also have a longer informational video about the TMB coming up where we will show camping spots we saw along the trail. Do you have some more questions you would like us to talk about during the informational video?
