Our last rental was a nightmare, we were in southern France. The pick-up was fine but after we'd used half a tank we decided it'd be a good time to look for some fuel. After 7 fuel stations in a row being empty I began to suspect something was a miss. We managed to find a McDonald's (for wifi since we didn't have any cellular data) and checked the news and sure enough, petrol deliverers were protesting their unfair wages. Good for them. We were running on fumes at this point. When we contacted the rental agency to explain the situation (obviously they were unaware since they didn't forwarn us!) they offered no compensation for this shortsightedness on their part. Their only consolation was constantly saying that "the situation was affecting everyone as well." Small consolation. We hired an Uber to take us to our lodgings, had to wait around two days, get taxi'd back to town to attempt to get our car. Luckily the station down the block was being filled up so we got in line with everyone else starving for fuel. The machine restricted my card to 50 liters but I had another card so was able to fill all the way up 😅. And that lovely little European car managed to stretch out that tank of gas for the rest of the trip! Moral of the story: you can always count on the French to strike 🥖🇫🇷

This sketch feels very relevant this week. I just rented a car today! Well, it was supposed to be a car...ended up being a not-very-similar SUV instead 🙄. I've always wondered what kind of investment in oil companies car rental companies have. (and yes, I can drive manual, I drive manual for 25 years, but not in RHD car, my left hand is a moron.. I simply can't convince my left hand to change gears)
That last was a big problem with Top Gear's "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car". I think Jay Leno was the only American or Continental European who didn't miss a shift at least once. I still think Sabine Schmitz would've won the "beat Clarkson's lap time but in a van" challenge if the van were left-hand drive - having brought an RHD van all the way from Britain for a German to drive in Germany was subtle for Top Gear cheating but surely not accidental.

Reminds me of my trip to Iceland. I was talked into getting super expensive insurance. The windshield costed like $1200 to replace because it has built in defrosting. Apparently windstorms can strip the paint clean off due to the lava fields around the country. And if we decided to do some off-roading we'd be covered. We had some fun since we paid for so much coverage.

That was actually a decent car rental experience, compared to gold car. Goldcar will add a bunch of random fees, some of which you’ve been lied to about being deposits. Force you to getting their insurance (forget that you’ve already booked one online through another insurance) or you pay over a 1100 + € deposit (said to be returned over 4 weeks after return if they chose to). Get their insurance it’s down to a 300€ deposit.
You only missed the one thing... if you are paying with a debit card instead of a credit card, they tack on a deposit where it would literally be cheaper to hire a limo.

We're literally smack in the middle of a car hire nightmare. Too soon, boys. Too soon.
Another comedian once said that car rental companies are good at TAKING reservations, but they're not good at HOLDING reservations.
A dream of a car. More a concept than anything physical
I once rented a car in Corsica that was 2 months old and scratched on every single body panel, it also had a damaged wing mirror. After 2 weeks holiday I had not helped the car's situation.
This was sooo good because it reperspented how its soooo bad. Thaks lads, hilarious
This is sooooo recognizable. They only thing I'm missing is priority addon to your booking and still have to join the long que.
This reminds me of an episode of Home Improvement with Tim Allen, where he tries to rent a car at two different airports, but the guy is the same.
Lad was lucky to have had a prior online reservation. Making a new reservation on the spot would've taken him 2 more hours.
"Rest assured that after you spend your whole trip stressing: we do not actually care about any of that, it would cost us too much to do anything."
Brilliant guys. Reminds me of when the organisation I work for booked 2 cars at an airport that shall remain nameless and the rental car company cancelled one of them.
The frickin' ending had me in stitches, great job lads
Right??? Like how dare they be that funny 😂
These guys are pure genius, so talented, witty refreshing angels
That was actually a decent car rental experience, compared to gold car. Goldcar will add a bunch of random fees, some of which you’ve been lied to about being deposits. Force you to getting their insurance (forget that you’ve already booked one online through another insurance) or you pay over a 1100 + € deposit (said to be returned over 4 weeks after return if they chose to). Get their insurance it’s down to a 300€ deposit.
You only missed the one thing... if you are paying with a debit card instead of a credit card, they tack on a deposit where it would literally be cheaper to hire a limo.
I can attest to the fact that all the cover in the world doesn't prevent you being abandoned by europcar on the french mororway with a flat tyre and no spare tyre or replacement vehicle available.
