I believe the fighter in the video here is a Breton, which is the closest equivalent to a half-elf in TES.

The thing is that I'm pretty sure this is about D&D where people usually are complaining about the mechanic rather than the concept. When you have no option to "parry this" you don't feel like the badass fighter you should be.
@@TheKingmetroid And how is the spell parried by a sword? If you can't stick to immersion then you miss the point of D&D.
Stat sheets and numbers will never outdo immersion that makes sense. Give a REASON for a spell to be parried. In this case the fighter draws back as the casting hand misses and he counters with a fist. Can also grab the arm/shoulder. etc.
If you're getting creative with it you can have a fighter toss sand/dust in the mages eyes to distract. If they're fighting in a place with sand or dirt or something. Basically being a sneak bugger like Owman from Sekiro.

I'm getting so many ideas now. I tend to main fighter in D&D computer games. Warlock and mages are also fun though (pre BG3. It's not the same when familiars don't play/talk back).
@@Veldazandteausing the trailer as a basis, the spell needs casting and a catalyst or hand pointing the direction of the cast. In melee range a parry could be the Fighter, like in the clip, twisting the hand back to the user wich made her fly like a plushy toy.

Or Another example could be battlemaster fighter disarming the focus of caster(focus as in the item they need to hold in order to cast the spell)
The rogue and barbarian can survive this with a few broken bones. The mage hit the wall hard enough to shatter basalt.

Since every optimised DnD Fighter is some flavour of hand crossbow spitting 5 1d6+10 bolts in a single turn thanks to sharpshooter and crossbow expert, this checks out. They can even go into melee range for crossbow-fu if they really want.

Not just a large sword, but literally any sword. Or any weapon.
@@anton.chigrinetc.96 yeah, but most of the time a smaller sword is easier to handle. Less weight, shorter, so much easier to swing, you would rarely need to use anything besides its edge. But with a zweihander like this one, each swing would be a huge opening for the enemy, so you have to use its pommel as well.

I have a question. Canonically what does a lvl 20 fighter look like? It’s not like wizards who can just increase more and more in magical power, there’s a limit to the strength and even weapon skill that a baseline human is capable of, are they magically augmented somehow? What does it look like?

I always play a Pally, but whenever someone says that playing a fighter is boring, id say that in a world where there are people throwing fire, raising the dead, turning into all sorts of animals and bending the laws of reality to fight things, id be really afraid of the one dude fighting against them who has none of that. Just a dude with a sword, he has to be pretty damn lethal with that sword.

Agreed. I was able to Make a Captain America style fighter in d&d; I've had so much fun being real creative with him than almost any other character I've made. For example, we had to fight a hag. In the morning, I put on a performance that I was a ptsd-ridden old soldier to get her sympathy/annoyance to look in my room for rats. We shut the door and went to town on beating her down. She turned invisible to hide but then I whipped out my waterskin and sprayed in her general direction, making her visible due to the floating water. So much fun.
I play a dwarven fighter and the party jokes on how I’m the scariest thing in the party. One time we had to escape a big encounter while a ton of minions and a boss we weren’t ready for showed up. While everyone else was getting the plan ready to get out I held the entire force back for multiple rounds to give them time. Fighters are not to be fucked with

Sometimes you want to be Batman surrounded by the Justice League. You want to be the guy who gets by by his own strength, determination, and skill. No magic. No rage or stealth or underhanded tricks. No gods or nature spirits granting them powers, just a guy with a sword standing in front of a monster and everyone else standing behind you. In a D&D party with wizards, druids, and clerics, the plain fighter is sometimes the most unique.
Oh yeah I’m my party my fighter has thus far dominated and owned the battlefield pushing & maneuvering the enemies to provide more advantageous opportunities for my allies. I actually killed an NPC with nothing more than my reaction & two actions
I ran numbers for level 20 on the original 5e phb. Champion fighters on single targets out damaged everyone but paladins vs undead/fiends. Paladin vs undead/fiends out did fighters but you can't always pick your enemies (was 85 pts higher over the 5 rounds). Evocation wizards were kings of mass damage (no surprise). Was done on a 5 round combat. Our houserule for crits was max plus roll instead of just rolling twice the dice. So the totals would be lower for complete raw, but fighters would still be ahead.
@@jago668 From a game balance perspective, fighters and barbarians should be doing the most damage because they have the least utility and mobility options (though a dex fighter could just use a bow). At higher levels, you're more likely to fight things that can fly and teleport. You're very rarely able to just stand in melee and whack the BBEG the whole fight. They're more likely than other classes to need to burn their action dashing or need to wait for something to come into range.

Playing Dark souls was what made me fall in love with sword fighting in general. Fighting with swords really feels like doing a deadly dance between you and your enemies. And I love that dance

There are no boring characters. Even bog standard archetypes can be incredibly powerful or refreshing if you use imagination to tweak them a little.
Personally, I like a human fighter who is Neutral Evil. Just a straight up mercenary. Drives the Paladin and/or Cleric insane because they're constantly paranoid that I'm going to betray them. And I never do. Why not? Because although I'm evil, I abide by my contract. The gold keeps coming and I'm your guy. Can't be bought if I'm already paid for.
As a fighter you may not be the guy casting reality-altering spells, but you just might be the guy to cut down that man with nothing but a piece of sharp metal.

I remember someone in my party had a fighter who manage to make a fighter with an interesting personality where we thought he was a dumb champion who just bonked things but it ended up him and the DM made a deal to have his character pretend to be a champion but was secretly a battle master. We were fighting against a group of elite knights and a high level mage and when it was just him standing he started pulling out all these maneuvers and techniques and rolling really well and wiped the floor with them single handedly like a legend and his characters in lore reason for hiding his talent was because he was worried his new friends (the party) would become scared of him.

Nah, in a world full of mystic and calamitous danger, my character would be a poor serf-turned-levy. Moulnourished with ragged clothes and equipped with a moldy stick with a rustic steel barb at the end. Truly a legendary hero destined to defeat dragons.
I love how his skill is demonstrated there. He dodged a rogue by move to strike a caster, he used an impulse from parring barbarian's axe for a swing to his sword and most cool was a parry caster's hand into herself.

I always liked the interpretation that they were unnaturally strong warriors that have good equipment, and the other interpretation that they're just regular dudes that are putting every fiber of effort they have into every action they have.
Could be that they start out as regular people but as they get stronger it changes.

I think the issue is that the fighter has the least amount of identity tied to the class. It's incredibly open ended so it requires more from the player to give it an identity.
You can play any type of warrior from any culture and almost any battlefield role.
I why it gets the most feats. It wants you to load up on feats and be able to make this monster or take the asi so many times that your stats are crazy next to everyone else’s
now that you mention it, it is "easy to learn, hard to master"

Im a fighter... I rolled a nat 2 and still manage to hit stuff. And can attack 3 times a turn. And if im feeling frisky i attack six times and lets not talk about my maneuvers because I don't want to take all the glory in a fight.

@benjaminholcomb9478 Funnily enough, a high-level fighter with 16 con and average hp would survive a meteor swarm that dealt average damage.
@@supremecaffeine2633 Hi im here with the math, meteror swarm does 40d6 damage 20/20 on bludgeoning and fire which is an average of 140 damage (40x3.5). A fighter with 16 con at level 17(min level a wizard can cast meteor swarm) has 157hp (13+((6+3)x16)) which means they will barely survive with 17 hp.
and the best part is that he not only beat three people but he beat them not using simple brute strength but skill and a complete understanding of his weapon and the weak point of the protagonist team. He's a true fighter

For me, the best part of playing the fighter is this... audacity, I guess? The audacity of the idea of carving your name on this world with your weapon to leave a legacy if you have to. Being among all those individuals with different sources of power, and having the sheer belief that you can do it, that no matter how much the odds are stacked against you, your resilience , your skill and your competence will carry you through and it will be enough, the belief that you are enough. It is a way worth walking and a fantasy worth playing.

I usually play spellcasters, but my favourite combat moment in D&D was as a fighter.
I charged an enemy mage with my polearm. They cast Shield to deflect the strike. I drop the polearm and shove them prone. Action Surge, grapple, pull them towards my allies, draw my sword and then stab with advantage.
It was amazing. You can have all the mystical power in the world, but at the end of the day your body is still a sack of meat.
You know, I think that's one of the problems with the warrior vs mage issue in modern fiction. Any mage that achieves relevance has acquired the super durability + healing factor package that makes them basically low level super heroes, and they get to learn martial arts on top of that. They have to much going for them.

I always liked the physical fighter classes. They always seemed easy to understand for me, compared to other classes, and they give me that power fantasy of "This is all my strength, without the help of parlor tricks." Like think about my character just walking out of a storm of magic that was used to kill him, just to walk over and kill the opponents just seemed so badass to me lol

That pretty much describes my 1st time completing the grand archive! I decided to try out some different equipment in there instead of progressing for a while and encountered those 3. Got creamed. Switched to my trusty Claymore and destroyed them in 1 attempt.

You do realize countless movies and games show fighters in bad presentation, right? Game companies fool players with presentation for many reasons. So your argument is flawed there. Immersion though? That's what it's about. To have things "make sense". A game that pulls fighters off well if "For Honor". The pacing. The ideals. The motivation.

Druids are the best infiltrators by virtue of being able to turn into tiny animals, and the spell casting rogue is he best thief of the bunch.
Also, I don't know how the paladins doesn't kick more ass than the fighter, in melee anyways, they're also the true "martial anti mage" compared to fighters

i love playing human fighter the most. its like being in a world of magic, pacts with demonic entities or gods, strange spiritual abilities born from a connection with nature and deciding "fuck that im going to be a guy with a pointy stick." the other party members may laugh at you, but when something needs stabbing with a pointy stick, theyre all gonna wish someone was there to do it
Exactly. In a party with a sorcerer with magic ancestry, a cleric being granted power from his god, and a warlock borrowing eldritch power from a demon, the guy with nothing but a sword is the most badass. And all those other 3 are going to be standing behind him when push comes to shove.
It's the classic isekai fantasy, and I roll my eyes when any of the game designers (Larian Studios was most recently guilty of this) are surprised that roughly 50% of players pick Human Fighter. Look how popular isekai anime is. Every time the main character is just some normal person, sometimes granted a special ability. Having a normal person to relate to helps a player experience all the strange shit in the world. When the shit stops being strange, then eventually interest moves into making other types of characters.
Totally my party is very caster heavy we have a: Bard, Cleric, Sorcerer, Wizard & our Rouge who’s well a rouge. Then there’s me the Human Fighter who’s been throwing down with orcs, wizards & everything between with my sword & barehands

The appeal to a human fighter to me is the same as guardsmen in warhammer. It could literally be anyone alive right now. Magic isn't real, but with enough practice and dedication, anyone can be a human fighter. It helps ground the setting and makes it all the more special when some regular dude with a sword is kicking ass in a setting where people can summon pillars of fire from nothing... though I usually go with spears.

That's how you must fight with Two-Handed Sword. Thing's weight is massive compared to other weapons and it's hard to swing it constantly. That's why you and your sword have to be in constant motion and make use of your inertia. If you stop you're becoming a lot more vulnerable
@@user-oi5eo6mv9iThat’s true but it’s easy to overstate the weight of even a large sword, it’s only gonna be around 5kg which isn’t too hard to move with two hands. Still useful to use and be aware of your momentum but you can also shift direction quickly.

ok, so fighter can not be basic IN COMBAT as long as the player playing it can describe his actions in exact details to have such fights with tactics and manoeuvers like those shown in this video.

the difference is between : I strike with my sword and I take my sword in Mordhau and strike with the guard while doing a step back to retreat from his threat range and recreate a neutral situation.

The difference is "does your DM just say Hit or Miss during a combat round or does your DM describe how an attack hits you, or how you deflect the attack, or the actions an anemy takes to avoid your attack, or the impact your attack makes on the enemy"
If the only thing your DM says is "two hits and a miss, that your turn?" After rolling 3 attacks then ofc fighter will be boring.

@@better8655 Grab the casters free hand. Its not an explicit combat option, but nothing prevents you from attempting or doing so.
You may also attempt to attack the weapon, just like you would attempt to target a door or chest. Dealing damage and destroying it eventually.

Fighter is a great class for beginner and veteran players. Easy to learn but tons of fun because of easy resource management and the fact you’re unstoppable. Oh, what’s that? You want magic? Eldritch Knight. Definitely my favorite class all around because everything you do feels badass and it’s almost never not useful to have a fighter

Rune fighter is also nuts and still has that magic feel. My dwarf rune knight straight up makes it ridicules to defeat my party if they don’t focus me first.
One day, I will be able to play a fighter in a campaign. All Fighter classes have so much flavor and together with many Feats and ASIs can make incredible characters at the hands of people who have the imagination.

I literally did this in my first D&D boss fight. I carried my step mother and my brother through the encounter and it felt AMAZING.
I love this "realistic" fighting so much more over fancy fantasy jumps and whatnot. Beating someone with less grace and more with your fists is so satisfying to watch.
I love how the second crossguard comes into play catching the elf's sword right before she resorted to magic. That part of a sword is called a "parierhaken" and has been added to provide more protection for the user, especially to parry strikes that would hit further up your arm, like the shoulder area.

I'm always amazed when people infer that the fighter is a "boring class" when you can look back through history at the soldiery and warriors from around the world and build characters that emulate them; Egyptian charioteers, polish winged hussars, Aztec jaguar warriors, Roman Centurions, Welsh Longbowman, Swedish Vikings, Indian Rajput... All of them can be created using a thimble of effort and imagination without having to delve into a bazilion sourcebooks.
Some of my favorite times in D&D were as a Fighter. They may not cast spells(subclasses that are casters aside) or have the ability to talk their way out of a problem, but they'll definitely make heads roll when one comes
I will homebrew a new kind of passive for characters with specific weapons or common ones but with a 20+ Strength that is going to be called "Epic Strength." I would be that once round with one common attack that you hit, you make the creature (of Large or a smaller) to make a Strength/Con save, the creature is pushed 5fts, if it fail the save they fall prone, if not it doesn't happen anything besides of the push.

I always loved human fighters because other players play exotic races to make their character more unique and, while at first sight i'm just the plain boring guy, In the background you better believe that guy has 10+ pages of backstory and a Shakespeare level character depth
Yeah because you don't have to spend as much time on the character itself because it is a little basic you can afford to spend more time on the backstory and make really compelling good characters

Reminds me of how my halfling battlemaster started a fight with the secondary dragon slaying party at the finale of Icespire. "We were here first to kill the dragon. You're just going to have to give up." A grizzled 3 foot something man wielding a longsword twice his length steps out and says "Oh yeah? Well I don't see you with a dragon killing sword."
Nothing more beautiful then wizards and all their magic arts brought beneath the heel of steel and brawn.

Fighters have proficiency in all weapons. That means a 'fighter' could be:
-A greatsword-weilding fully armored knight
-An archer
-A crossbowman
-A nimble duelist with a rapier
-A sword and buckler man
-A halberdier
-A club-weilding caveman
-A Quarterstaff-swinging woodsman
Or any of the above depending on the day of the week or his mood.
Exactly, thats why they are so dangerous. Considering they have a very wide arsenal and can use it, its just like a spell caster. Only that fighters have the right weaponset for the job.
Can we all clap hands for the fighter for the fact that in spite of wearing armor that's limiting his movement and vision,he is able to keep up with more lightly armored and agile opponents THIS well? Now that's skill right there.

If I recall correctly, back in 3.5 D&D all attack rolls that succeeded were just considered "Successful attacks, with damage." But the actual attack itself, what it was like wasn't described. So when a DM wanted to describe an attack and it's blow on the target, it could look as epic as this. Or just be "You struck him with a 5 points of damage."
