Thanks for making this video. I've been fighting the shifter in my 2000 f250 plow truck for years. I replaced the shift cable because it was cheap and easy. I never would've thought about that stupid switch being the problem. It was so bound up, it caused the shift linkage on the transmission to bend where the cable attaches. It shifts smooth as butter now! Wish I would've come across this video 5-6 years ago. Would've saved me a lot of grief😂
Same problem shifting on my 99 f150, it got so hard to move that the previous owner broke the plastic end of the shift lever inside the cab. When I bought it we changed the shift cable and linkage which helped but it still wasn't right, after seeing your video I had my mechanic do the same thing and now it's good as New!😊 Thanks for sharing!!!✌️
This fixed my truck! Hard to believe it made it so hard to get out of park.Had to put on a new shifter lever because i broke the end off where the od button is getting it out of park.ha.Saw that the bushings on the shift column needed changing so i did that. Now its so smooth shifting. Thanks for the video.
Instead of cable ties, you can dial in the position if the shift indicator with that little black wheel that’s in front of where he put the cable ties. Spin the wheel and the little orange pointer moves right and left.
Great explanation. I had to remplace broken shift cable due to resistance while shifting. So watching your video saving me another 100 bucks for buying another one if it breaks. Had remplace shift cable and position sensor @the same time and now it works like Champ. Thanks you
I was hoping to know where Park is. You showed where neutral is underneath but I wasn't sure which direction to move the cable under the truck to be in park. Unfortunately my truck was turned off in drive and now I don't have a frame of reference as I'm replacing the gear shift tube
Looks like it still shifts hard. The shaft that goes inside the transmission seizes up,u gotta drop the pan pull the shaft out and clean it..u got a video on that
Shit. That sounds like the problem that I have. Ugh. I didn't think that the inside of the shaft can be reached from the pan at the bottom. If so then I guess I have a messy and miserable job ahead of me. Unless the shaft is binding up due to whatever that shaft interfaces with is the problem with binding and back feeding its way to the shaft.
The shift lever on my 2000 Expedition was getting harder to shift in to gears and it felt sloppy to get it exactly in drive. The dealer just charged me $240 to diagnose and replace this range sensor.
Was yours hard to get out of park and then sloppy and tricky to get in gears.my shifter handle is not real loose.I looked at the range sensor ,dont look hard to change but you know how that can go.lol.thanks
@@georgeronnieburnettburnett4684 Yes, over time shifting from park to drive was getting harder due to the range sensor. UA-cam vids show the process but correctly clocking the new sensor during install is crucial. I didn’t know where my problem was which is why the dealer diagnosed and repaired my vehicle.
The shaft coming out of the transmission rides inside that plastic Delrin bushing which gets sticky over time, that in turn makes it hard to shift. At first we just changed the shift cable and linkage which helped but after changing this part made it 100% better just like new! But be careful and patient taking everything apart don't want to break the steel shaft that goes inside the transmission!💸💸
I got to automatic transmission on a 2004 E150 headline van if I push my shift box all the way forward to the transmission how many clicks you should have going back
I have a 1994 F350 5.8l gas regular Cab dump dually / the auto Lever shifter is hard to shift with No indicator for Park - Nutual - Drive etc. ? Can U please help how to fix it ?

How it going man I have the same problem on my Chevy Malibu 09 can it be the same thing? I replace I don’t remember the name of the peace but the thing is that I couldn’t put it back to parking because the peace that goes in parking was damage. I will really appreciate your help.
So in my case there isn't anything wrong with the sensor. The linkage itself is very tight. It will shift from park to 1st gear fine. But when coming back to park ( meaning now the cable has to push the shift linkage not pull it ) it is very tight and eventually breaks the cable housing at the mounting point just before where it mounts to the transmission shift linkage. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix that ? I have tried lubing up the shaft right where it goes into the transmission and that does help. The shaft isn't removable at least not easily removable. It doesn't bolt on it must be a press fit or there is some kind of key on the inside of the transmission case.
That could be very expensive, so, we had to go really slow nothing broke the bolt loose until we sprayed some FREEZE OFF on it, similar to freon in a can, same theory as Heat,, made by CRC good luck 🤞 it worked for us.✌️
@@InflamedBallz OK. Thanks. My issue must be different. I have to do a lot of wiggling to get out of park, then I seem to be home free. The video was very informative.
@@renejacques8288 what was your problem? I have the same problem now. Hard to get into reverse, but after that im good, then it gets hard again when crossing reverse to go back yo park. Something between park & reverse is the problem
I know this was 10 months ago but for anyone else reading this, I have an 01 f350 7.3 automatic and I can definitely suggest not forcing the shifter if it doesn't move freely or you could end up replacing the shift tube in the column like I did tonight in a parking lot in a thunder storm. They can actually crack in half which is just awesome. I mistakenly figured that infamous t30 screws that hold the shift tube to the shift cable bracket had just gotten loose again causing the truck to not really be all the way in Park and prevent the truck from starting. I was wrong and impatient. So after replacing the tube and the associated internal rod and bushings, I now had a shift lever that no longer had the play that I had become used to over the years and that was great but it still didn't shift which was odd. So I disconnect the shift linkage under the dash by using a screw driver to pop the cable off of the arm and then from under the truck I tapped the frozen shift arm at the transmission back and forth to loosen it (it would not move by hand). I moved the lever all the way towards the rear of the truck for the Park position and then I moved the shifter on the column to Park and reconnected the linkage under the dash and was now able start it normally, shift through all gears and drive it but the shifting requires noticeably increased effort. Hopefully the source of the added resistance turns out to be the sensor at the transmission as in this video. Note: If you're just not able to occasionally get the shifter all of the way to park and the truck refuses to start unless you move the lever further towards Park but the shifter moves normally other than being slightly loose, then it may also just be one or both of the t30 screws under the dash that connect the shift cable bracket to the shift tube. They are know to loosen up over time and I've previously had to tightened mine twice with this same symptom before finally using blue thread locker.

I did my switch '99 Super Duty due to hard to move lever. I also had to replace the shift lever and the shaft bushings. It's like a new truck now.

Nice video bro. I bought the neutral safety switch today thinking this was the issue, but i havnt installed it yet.
This is the only vid that has it right. See recent vid I just posted. The cable rentention wings are junk too.

You can just move the adjuster underneath the bracket. No need for zip ties.
What all other Fords have this problem? Ranger columns are famously hard
to shift

Does it have to be in neutral when you take it off?

Auto or manual?
