I felt that 'play' but didn't know what was going on. I was on a slight incline when I put it into park and took my foot off the brake. The truck, 2004 Ranger, started to roll and I pushed the lever up hard and it 'clunked' into park which broke the tube Taking things apart, I found that the one of the two end bolts farthest away from the column was loose allowing for limited movement of the cable which led to sloppy shifting.
My shifter handle has some play and the end of the rod has play inside the tube…is this normal? I changed the bushing already, wondering if I need to change the entire tube/rod assembly. Sometimes the car won’t start until I wiggle the shifter arm, I imagine it’s not fully in park
There is four large nuts that go on studs. Get up under there you will see them. Slide your seat all the way forward and let the column rest on the seat it will help not stretch out all the wires as your working on it.
Bought a 2007 Sport with 106K mi., & the shifter is TIGHT, difficult to shift. ALL my vehicles are manual except this one, but I had no choice n the matter. If/when it breaks or loosens up, I know I can repair it myself & will grease the shart out of it. Thanks for the video!
Right on glad it helps a bit. Also the bushings in the hold down clamps sometimes wear out, I think they came with the new shifter tube. It’s actually super cheap to buy a new one and throw in there. Instantly gives you better shifting! 👌👍
My Overdrive Off light flashes, my reverse barely moves the truck, when I put it in drive my rpms go thru the roof but I go nowhere, if I shift her into 2nd I can drive like nothing is even wrong with it. Any tips?? I replaced my transmission output speed sensor but still no fix
Sorry I missed Your question. Without driving it and having it hooked up to a pressure gauge I can’t be sure but my guess is your overdrive sprag one way clutch has failed. Unfortunately I think you need to tear the trans apart to fix. Or you could just install a manual transmission like I did!
SO EVEN IF ITS (LOCKED IN REVERSE) YOU HAVE TO GET THIS REPLACED IGUEES EH? ANYONE KNOW ABOUT THAT? I HAVE A 2011 RANGER & THATS THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT 🔐 IN REVERSE.
Maybe disconnect the cable from the transmission and see if you can shift by hand below then work your way up to the column. It could also be a sized cable.
@@RangerShop1 I had an old Chevy with an aftermarket manual 3 speed on the floor. Every now & then it would get stuck in TWO gears & I'd have to crawl under & manipulate two levers back into neutral. I'd chock the wheels & would usually have to rock the truck back & forth with my foot on the rear tire to "get it".
Howdy Jake - my 2009 4 cyl has lever floppage and the shift indicator pointer fell down to less than 1 and stays there. Is the procedure basically the same for a 2009? Thanks
I have to disagree. I've owned everything under the sun. Ford is better than Chevy or Dodge by far, IMO. Toyota is best. My boss has a 2013 4x4 F150 that he beats the snots out of & nothing ever breaks with 150k mi. on it. 90 mph all day, everyday loaded with 1500 lbs of tools. This is just one unfortunate poor design. Grease the shart out of it!
Sorry this got you so upset. I looked at buying a truck in 2024 and changed my mind. I dont want that kind of note. These really are great trucks for the money and gas milage. Hope things got better.
So mine is stuck in drive… do I have to somehow get it back into park or something? I’ve already seen the tube is def cracked I just don’t know how to even get the broken one out after unbolting everything. Not sure how to “drop” the steering wheel?
Pull off the trim around the column, and the trim underneath the column by your knees, once the trim is removed climb under the dash and look up you will see 4 large nuts they hold the column up. Remove them and you can drop the column, once the column is sitting on your seat you will be able to see the bolts holding that shaft down. Don’t forget to unhook the PRNDL wire before dropping the column or you will break it. Sorry I definitely could have done a better job filming back in the early days!
@@RangerShop1 haha it’s all good , I’m just glad you took time to even make a video! Thanks for all the help! I’m about to try that right now. Pray for me haha
@@RangerShop1 ok idk if you can help me even more… lol, I got the broke tube and plunger out and I got the new one in… well it’s still stuck in drive and no matter what I do it still will not shift up or down… any ideas? Did I put it back together wrong? I’m lost
Great explanation. Thank you

Exactly like mine…. I think the loose bolts are the original problem. Causing us to put more force on the shifter tube to actuate it.
My shifter handle has some play and the end of the rod has play inside the tube…is this normal? I changed the bushing already, wondering if I need to change the entire tube/rod assembly.

Yeah I’d replace the whole thing It should fix your issue!
Wish he would have shown how he lowered the column

I have a 2001 ford ranger edge 3.0 same problem happen I go to oreilys and auto zone they can’t order this part where did you order it

@@flyovercounty1427Yes, exact same.
This is the second time this junk ford ranger has broken! Never again will I OWN a FORD ANYTHING!
Sorry to hear that. I've have two rangers and this shaft has never broken.
The part is like 15$ and takes maybe an hour to do. I’m not sure I’d throw away a truck over that.
