I admire your persistence and ingenuity. A very gritty video and one that convinced me to to send my 2007 Tundra to a shop for a new tire hoist. My vehicle spent all its life in Nebraska and Kansas ( salted roads ) but now lives in Arizona. Every bolt is corroded such that every repair becomes a wrestling match like your video. Your shop looks like a war zone! Great video and I am now certain I will not try this myself, rather let the pros work on it.
Thank you for your video, I’m heading this weekend Nov 9,2024 to do the same job on my 2008 Toyota 4Runner, I’ll probably have the same issues, now I have some good ideas 💡 thank you for your video again.
It’s a tough job but just take your time and use heat and penetrating fluid. A ratchet will fit above but it is tight. Hopefully you have less rust than this 4Runner had. Good luck
Jacob, thank you for the outstanding video. I recently bought an 08 project car. I knew going in it needed work but wasn't counting on fixing the spare tire carrier. Your excellent video made a seemingly impossible job doable. Tip for others, skip the Toyota jack tool and use a 3/8 drive extension, a breaker bar, PB Blaster and some muscle to break the winch loose. Hey, you can't break it because it is already broken. Thanks again Jacob!
I just did this. The extension will not move.....18 inch breaker bar and then my Snap ON impact wrench. No luck.....and now I can't break the extension loose......what a pain.
Sorry it was so long but I had no idea what I was in for. No details anywhere online. I need to learn to edit but I normally just figure people can fast forward or skip around. Thank you for the positive comments and good luck!
Thanks for the video. Son had a flat on the 08 and almost couldn’t get the spare down. He managed but the hangar wire is toast. Nice to see how it comes apart for the replacement. A socket designed for stripped bolt heads and soaking those bolts for a couple of days would have really helped you out there. Like you said “It’s all about the tools”. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching. I know it’s a long video but I am not great with editing. I just like to post things I can’t find online so other people can find a better solution. The hardest part is the tire in the way and that guide. I think cutting a slot in the bolts and turning them from underneath would work best. It is so tight above the support. Thanks again for watching
Did you decide to purchase replacement and if so do you have a video. Great patience and walk through video.....yours was a "real world" experience. Unfortunately those last 4 bolts were in a horrible position....if easier access you could have used a wire brush and a small file to knock the rust off and square up the heads. When I encounter similar "design better ideas," I wish the engineer who came up with the idea was lying on his back next to me...........I shouldn't say what I'd be doing with my hammer. thanks again...well done.
fucking hell, your video is pretty much EXACTLY what I'm about to have to do... Thanks for the vid tho, this was really helpful for me to plan, and to brace for impact on this nightmare job.
I Let the air out of the tire, jacked up the rim of the spare tire and then fished the center portion of the hoist through the center of the rim. Took a little doing and I needed pry bars, but it worked with no cutting.
My tire was flat and had no movement but I did not try to Jack it up either. I just figured it was failed anyway and decided cutting it would be the fastest way to remove it.
Informative, but a little depressing. Thanks. I have same issue on 07 Minnesota 4Runner. I've had success with the bolts for the skid shield that protects the gas tank, and the bolts for the gas tank straps, with multiple applications over a week or so of PB Blaster and heat from a propane torch. However, those bolts are much easier to access. The poor access to the spare tire carrier hoist makes this job look like a royal pain.
It was a pain. I spent about four hours on it. After the two outside bolts are removed the four inside bolts are much easier. I posted a video so others might find a better solution. Many have said to grind a slot I. The bolt and turn it like a screw. The heat does help. It was really easy to install the new replacement one. I posted a video but the new replacement has a strange chain instead of a cable
@@jakemir I finally replaced the spare carrier. Thanks to your video, I didn't waste time trying to remove the two outside bolts by turning them off. I used an air chisel to notch the two outside bolts, then a vice grips to bend them until they broke. I was able to turn the four inside bolts off without much difficulty after applying heat.
You need PB Blaster in your life. And industrial strength white vinegar (hardware stores) helps neutralize rust. My 06 V8 sport has the same rust issues. Came from MA but I didn't know that when I bought it. I've been carrying my spare in the back cause the carrier is too rusted to trust that cable not to snap. But it does raise and lower freely. Still, I'm either going to replace it or get a rear swing-out mount for the spare cause it's taking up too much space in the back. SOO much de-rusting to do this spring/summer.
I like the turbo torch because it is fast and chemical free. I used areokroil in the past but I had reaction to it and then I switched to PB blaster and had reactions to the too. Now I find it easier to just heat the bolts to expand the metal and break them free. I think this truck was from Ohio. My other 4Runner is a 2003 from Texas and the frame is like NEW! I appreciate the feedback
@@jakemir Ah, gotcha. Reactions aren't good. I'm fortunate I guess, I never have reactions to much of anything that I know of. Wash my hands with straight bleach sometimes. I don't have a torch tho, me and fire tend to not agree. Guess I need to get one tho. My RustRunner needs a lotta work. I have an '02 V6 Tacoma I'm running for now. It needs some work too but doesn't have the rust issues to worry about, just kinda looks like hell from failing paint. Been thinkin about doing my own videos on restoring them both. I look forward to more of yours. 👍
Thanks for the positive feedback. It was just seized from lack of use. I tried a pipe wrench on it after getting the guide out of the way but there is no access when the tire is up.
I cut mine the other day not much pressure on the spring i just let it drop to the ground , now i just driving around without a spare i have caa as my back up
I believe you are correct. I was not sure if there was tension and also did not want the tire to drop on top of me. I have a video that I replaced the hoist but it was difficult
Same here. This is why I added a video. Sorry it is so long. It took me a few hours and help from my wife. I ended up breaking it apart and then removing the collar. I thought I sanded it enough but I had to tap the collar back in and sand it again and oil it. Hope you get it completed

I appreciate that, it can be a tough job!, but I put it off for too many years
I really wanted to see you win. Glad you did!!

Same here
Had the same exact issue with my GX, nothing like a rachet, power drill, PB blaster, and a few moments of cussing it out to get it off😂, good video
Great video! One of my favorites to date! So down to earth and got the damn job done!
Thanks, I appreciate the positive feedback.
I cut those bolts with a grinder And got new bolts at Lowes store For $5 bucks
I know right I was cringing the whole time, I actually yelled at my screen so the guy could hear me tell him the grind them off, LOL but really dude
How do you place a grinder in such of uncomfortable space? There is no space for using a grinder
Just did my 2006 today. You saved me hours. Thank you!!
Thank you for the post, glad it helped

Thank you, here is the new part install video
2004 4Runner Spare Tire Carrier hoist installed

I just wonder if you can remove or losen the rectangular black box to give you some spaces for the wrench. It's a vapor canister
Yes, it can be removed but it is still a tight space
fucking hell, your video is pretty much EXACTLY what I'm about to have to do... Thanks for the vid tho, this was really helpful for me to plan, and to brace for impact on this nightmare job.
You sir are my hero, I have the exact same issue with my 07
Was going to do myself. Went to a local shop and charged me $100 to do it. Was no brainer after wrestling with it
That’s a great price. Worth every bit

Anybody find a third party that makes a better replacement ? Or is this the only option?
