Finally a Doom youtuber that makes tutorials on Doom Mapping, and makes it sound more fun and interesting. Great tutorial, lucky though i learned from youtube but there was nothing really well made. Till now
Editing tutorials like this so you can clearly see what to click on is harder than it looks. It is especially tedious. Presentation here is top-notch. I got to make some tutorials when I got started in IT, and this shits all over my work with how clear it is. I'm really impressed.
All I can say is that it's a blast! I released a 2 mods so far in the past 2 years. I never thought I would get into this when I first started. You'll get hooked. 😁
Thanks for this guide. it bring back so much nostalgia for me. made a level back to 2013. it was alot of fun. amazing people still making levels with a game more then 20 years old
Good for starting doom'mapping !The lil point you miss is to show the "make a door" tool, you win so much time, SO MUCH ! It's create a sector door activable on both side, tag and textures included !
Just a heads up: when I downloaded UDB my "3d mode" or rather "Visual Mode" was bound to "Q" and not "W". Hope that saves someone else a bit of confusion haha.
When I started UDB I hit the 3D button and my mouse was trapped in the window. Which is why I'm here. I had to drop to a console and kill the program. I couldn't get out! So yeah I have to learn the 3D hot key.
a mapping tutorial done right ive been mapping for doom for about, idk, 2 years at this point (never released anything) and yet i come back to this sort of video lol
Think about a couple of your favorite iwad maps (for instance, I really like Containment Area, Hell Beneath, Tricks & Traps, and The Living End). Ponder about which you think are the most fun to play, which you think look the coolest, and analyze why you think that about those levels. Now, plan out a rough concept for a map in your head, perhaps combine various aspects of said favorite maps, and then select a visual theme or two from one of them which you'll focus on for the level, try also to put a spin on things here and there, how you can imitate this or that encounter or trap, and how you can do some of them differently. An important part is that you'll want to make it a challenge, don't have to go overboard, but make fights so that they're hard for you yourself to beat, but not so hard that you don't think you can beat the level without saving, make that your Hard skill setting, then dial it down in intensity for Medium and Easy respectively (less numerous/tough enemies, more health and ammo). Ideally, levels should be realistically beatable from 'Pistol Start', ergo, without having to carry over stuff from previous levels. Importantly, *don't bite off more than you can chew*, it may be tempting to start work on a 32 level megawad which you've fantasized about, but that is a LOT of work, especially for a newbie, instead, make your first .wad a small set, 2, 3, maybe 4 or 5 maps. Lastly, if you're making maps for Vanilla or Boom format, you MUST test those levels with a Vanilla or Boom sourceport, GzDoom and its derivative ports change how some things work, and there are some things which works fine in GzDoom, but which will break and not function properly in Vanilla or Boom. UDMF is fine to work in, I like it, but it can also be a bit overwhelming in all the options it offers you, so I think starting out with something like Boom isn't a bad idea.
This is fantastic, I had no idea Doom Builder has evolved and changed this much over the last eight years. No more buggering about trying to create slopes, infinite views etc! Now it's minimal effort!!
Thank you! I only know basic stuff about level editing, before this point I knew 3d floors as the most advanced thing to do. I’m definitely going to return to this
Selaco (a game built in GZDoom with it's own level editor) came out recently and I've taken an interest in map making. This has been genuinely helpful since one of the first things I wanted to figure out was how to make a door.
this is the best doom builder tutorial. hell one of the best tutorials in general! im so glad you didn't draw anything, out, didn't overcomplicate anything, and moved at such a pace that i didn't have to fast forward or rewind! thank you so much, and i have infinite respect for people who make tutorial videos, as they help many people.
Excellent tutorial, although I wish you covered the 3D floor mode and visual sloping instead of showing how it's done with action specials, since the new tools are very convenient compared to the old slow painful way.
i spent 7 years previous decade with this as my main game, pretty much. i'm pretty handy with gzbuilder... and slade3 i never released anything to the public though :x only a preview build in the doomworld forums but i never even went there again. the one guy who tested it seemed to really like the first 5 levels of my megawad

Doom has been my game for decades. Ever since getting a computer in the 90s and getting this game, along with editors, I have been making maps for years....only for myself. Yup, not a single person has played any of my maps. Not one has been posted online. I know how you feel.
Get em out there! I've got a wad I worked on on and off over the years, got about 5 maps in. Stuck it on a survival Zandronum server and had some people hop on - got some pretty good feedback too
Thx to your guide, I’m able to learn how to make levels slowly, some I’ve already figured out on my own, like getting Project Brutality 3.0 configured, I’m attempting to make levels that uses the mod’s techniques, I always come back here incase I’m stuck, thx for the tutorial, love your videos too!
Hello friend, thank you very much !!! for you I know very well how I should make a map for Doom. I have been searching for 7 literal years how I should make a map ... but you have solved my life, a very good short and concise video of how it should be done. I look forward to the next story. thank you very much friend!
Thank you so much for this. I've been using Doom Builder 2 for years, always finding out about new tricks. Will you make a tutorial on how to do windows that you can't pass or shoot through? I know how to do that, but others might not be as good at copying other mappers as me.
Thank you for this amazingly useful video! You've managed to impart so many useful information in just 10 minutes and I feel like I've managed to grasp all the basics already. Well done!
Ah, I forgot to mention this, but I do wonder how to add custom music. If any mappers are browsing around, I’d greatly appreciate the help! I’m still very early into my Doom mapping career.
W isn't the default shortcut for 3D mode; Q is. I had to pause a bit after the first few minutes trying to replicate the shape and learn about split linedefs and dragging vertexes and lines, but once you get that down you'll be smooth sailin'. At least as much as you can in DOOM. Recovering from a botched shape drawing is weird and I'm still trying to get the rhythm of right click-left click for shape drawing down :)
Dope video. EDSF just happens to be my setup when playing DOOM! Edit Also super glad I can remap my controls in Preferences cuz I couldn't manually adjust the ceiling height as per this video due to the fact that I have a trackball mouse. I mapped them to my arrow keys, problem solved!
@Felipe Gomes First thing that I made was long room with big stairs, it had optional blue and red keycards on left and right, after a few days I abandoned the project
I didn't know someone added a helpful indicator that a switch is linked to the sector. In days past that was just a highlighted sector somewhere- the arrow visually connects them better imo!
You make the best Doomachinima. Now you made the best into tutorial to doom builder I have seen in over a decade. The documentation and tutorials for GZDB are abysmal. Sure, if you know what the thing you want is called, the wiki is great. Wanna try searching for it with common terms? Good fucking luck. Slowly. So very. Very. Slowly. And boring. Good thing some dude who makes doom sprites spin and scream came along and summarized 90% of of their basic tutorial section in 10 minutes of snappy, informative, and well-edited video.
Good video dude! I have a question about ACS scripts. You see, I'm trying to make a cutscene triggered by a line and it's a simple one. I just want to make the screen fade to black for some seconds so, how can I make that? I already use a "Fadeto" line and a changecam tied to a security cam actor but it doesn't make the screen black. Hope you can help me with this one mate
