One of the biggest pluses for me was the travel.I got to see Europe as a young Soldier. Being a poor kid from Brooklyn, never would have been able to afford to experience that. Now I have been to five continents, over forty countries, and "got to see the world". True, I didn't particularly want to experience Afghanistan, but duty calls. I am a more well rounded person, and think I appreciate various view points better than the average person. For a young person wanting to explore, the army could be ideal. Yeah, you could also be forced to experience Kansas, or some less desirable place, but it is an experience. I enjoyed the travel. Keep up the great informative videos Chris!
Your Kansas comment made me chuckle. I'm a brat son of a 23 year SGM Dad (passed 2016) and only a few years in myself long ago. My Mother joined the Army herself to get out of the midwest (Nebraska) and we had orders returning from 3 yrs at SHAPE Belgium to Ft. Benjamin Harrison, our furniture enroute when they changed his orders to Ft. Riley, KS. I remember she cried almost from JFK to KS in the car. Turned out an awesome base and assignment and my parents almost retired there in Manhattan, KS except that the Army gave him E-9 to do another two years out of Ft. Sheridan, IL. As a kid, I loved the history of the place and still have very occasional contact friends from that assignment.
@@majorjones4669 I grew up in Williamsburg. Joined in 1978 as a printer (83F before it was changed). Did 41 years ... 98G, 43L (formerly 71L), but best was the ten years I spent as a Drill Sergeant. Good old 11B. Retired in 2019 as SGM.
@danielvelez6150 what was your mos? I'm in the enlistment process and I want an mos that will have me traveling alot. I scored high enough to be eligible for every job in the army.
The absolute best barracks parties were spontaneous. Someone pops their head in to see a Chuck Norris movie on the TV so they sit down to watch. A few minutes his buddy comes looking for him, wondering where he went, goes back to his room to fetch a rack of beer. A couple of hours later? Priceless.
I remember going to the Class 6 on Ft Carson and ordering a pallet of beer (mixed brands or all 1 brand) for delivery to the barracks. Cost next to nothing, Free Ice, no delivery cost and had 1 hell of a barracks party. Only stipulation was turn car keys over the CQ desk and had to be 3 day weekend. You could get your keys back when sober.
6:00 I yelled out “zonk!” before he finished cause I knew exactly what he was leading towards. But during my time, zonk was called maybe 4-5 times over two years and I didn’t hear it at all during my last year or so. But yeah, when it’s yelled, it’s a thing of beauty.
Rebuilding a Rolls Royce engine takes such a long time, mostly because of the lack of documentation on their Sealant; the sealant Rolls Royce used was the Slow Cure, but the Quick Cure is chemically better, but the Quick Cure is more difficult to use with Automation because of the speed at which it cures (minutes instead of an hour, once you stop stirring).
I always thought that the food in Army was very good. I’ve eaten at very fine famous restaurants in NYC and Chicago and Cali after I left the Army, and it could be that I always was hungry when I was in but truthfully pretty good as I can recall. That and being trained on a variety of weapons was fun and rewarding.
Good day, sir. In the late 80s, early 90's A G.I. party and a barrack party was the same movie night, beer party were a clue on it was going to be a good time. You did not talk about all the travel. I saw Europe the middle east Africa and almost the whole USA. Paid and non paid travel. Yes not all my travel was ideal or memorable, but I got to see things that I would have never seen, if it was not for the time in the army. Fantastic video sir
Your first take on the bonding I don’t think it’s anywhere near the way it was when I was in Europe My enlistment was in the mid eighties when calling the states was $3.00 per minute and computers were in there infancy, back then we wrote letters home I still have all mine from my then girlfriend who I’m married to and have been for 37 years! So I got to know a group of people that I still talk with to this day,we even had a get together in the Midwest about ten years ago,we had great times and saved each other from what to us was pure isolation. I loved my time in the army, part of the E-4 brigade! If your not going to college or no direction in life the military is not a bad way to figure out who you are and what you want to do with your life, peace
Ft Benning GA, in the early 2000's. 3rd Brigade, 3 ID. After a battalion run, the LTC would give an inspirational speech then yell ZONK! I was a mechanic then....they hated that couldn't make us go to the motor pool
The 30 days of leave was great. I would take off Dec 21st to Jan 21st every year. Being lower enlisted. I volunteered for 24HR Cq on most holidays. It’s not worth taking a 3 day weekend when it’s slow. I worked almost every holiday and when I need a day off. When it was busy. Command remembered I worked holidays. Living in the barracks can suck. Hey you details all of the time. I used to have a tent in the wood line across the barracks to get away from that. Barracks parties were awesome! I had a kids pool in my barracks room. Had a party and had a mini keg in a trash can full of water and ice. Things got crazy and somone tipped it over. Water leaked into the S1 room. The next weekend brief was. “ No kiddy pools in the barracks” 😂 😂
17:00 I loved the travel, posted in Arizona, Heidelberg Germany, Washington DC, Montana, etc. I also loved the re-enlistment perks (any duty station or new MOS, plus free lunch)... the equipment was also really cool (hummers, tanks, deuce and a halfs, 5-tons, FMTVs, ...good times.
As an active duty MP on Fort Carson, but currently out to Poland, but a big this that is another positive in the Army is an opportunity for travel. While yes we still work plenty of hours and sometimes overnight (MP obviously) and not free roam all the time and plenty of stipulations attached but I have had opportunities to see many cities in Poland, also was able to go to Switzerland and Bulgaria during my time overseas. It's not all fun and games when sent to another nation but you may get to see places you otherwise wouldn't have necessarily chosen to go to or been able to afford. Which leads into also the good memories and fun stories from deployment/ Rotation. Again not always fun and games but there is certainly plenty of things I'll look back on from this time over here that I'll never forget. And lastly maybe a given/ known but a thing that I believe most soldiers like or at least me personally is Promotion/ Recognition or awards. It always feels good to hit that next rank or at a formation to be called up front and then have your team leader then PSG speak highly of you. Especially if your a lower enlisted and you have done stuff to exceed expectations and you get Recognition.
Travel in the Army? Weeeeeeeeell, I'm glad some people appreciate that feature. However, I wouldn't consider the Army as the most favored travel agent.
Can you make a video about the new and old retirement? blended vs the legacy being in the army now I have a lot of older enlisted people above me complaining about the new retirement

One of my favorite Army experiences was the D.I.Y. Auto garages. You could do anything there from oil changes to engine overhaul to bodywork.

A GI party is not a party at all. A GI party is where the barracks are cleaned throughly.
In AIT “Barracks Maintenance” after 1st formation was the zonk for us
In thirteen years on Army active duty I only heard Zonk! Once, of all places in Fort Polk
