  • We Are Harlot guitarist Jeff George stopped by the Gibson Showroom in Los Angeles, CA to discuss Ace Frehley and Angus Young, his musical roots and the brand new SG Standard ’61 from Gibsons “Original Collection.”
    The SG Standard ‘61 returns to the classic design that made it relevant, played and loved -- shaping sound across generations and genres of music. In 1961, the Les Paul model was put on hiatus and an all new design evolved into what is today known as the SG or “solid guitar”.
    The Gibson SG Standard '61 retains the styling of the original featuring a slim taper mahogany neck and a bound rosewood fingerboard. The mahogany body features deeply sculpted body scarfing, a 5-ply teardrop pickguard and a 22nd-fret neck joint. The nickel plated hardware includes a classic-style Tune-O-Matic bridge and keystone tuners.
    The pickups are 61R and 61T humbuckers for a classic voice with added power and top end. Controls feature audio taper potentiometers and orange drop capacitors.

      Mr. Roach I have to agree with you on that. As a beginner I loved Fender Strats. Then I met Mr Les Paul in NYC and I have 2 Fender guitars and about 10 fender Basses. That’s not the point. Gibson saw a genius and took them what 10 years to realize Les was a genius?
      I’m officially a Gibson gal now.
      I still Play my Strat and Mustang but the SG was officially the smartest thing since um “Little liver pills?” I don’t know but the light weight just fascinates me. ❤️

    I wanted to buy one of these Gibson SG Standard '61 Maestro Vibrola in Vintage Cherry for a while. After watching your video on this guitar i was totally discouraged from making my purchase due to you not being able to keep it in tune. But I went down to my local Guitar center here in Las Vegas and they had one in stock. I held it, the neck is outstanding the fret work is wonderful, the wood grain and color were so beautiful. I tuned it up and played a few cords and check the tuning, for sure it was out of tune. I fooled around trying to keep it in tune for three hours and became totally discouraged because this guitar was beautiful. So I did the only reasonable thing, I said to the salesman I am going to flip this Guitar Center pick, "blank side it stays here written side I buy it". It landed on written side so home with me it went, and boy am I glad it did. The next day I set out to find out why it wouldn't stay in tune and I discovered why, (fixed it) and now it's hard to knock it out of tune. First the tuning keys were lose and the screws holding the tuners on were striped from the factory, so i fixed that. Second the angle on the Vibrola is wrong from the factory, you need to tweak the angle and shim the Vibrola slightly, the E-string should not be touching the trem bar while in the resting position. Now polish the frets and do a complete set up. This guitar now when using the Vibrola as intended will stay in tune wonderfully. This guitar is a great guitar and if you take the time and put in the work to set it up properly, YOU WILL LOVE THIS GUITAR! I think that from the factory they just assemble the parts and are done, not realizing or having the time that it needs to make this fine guitar function together as a whole instrument. Glad I took the time and made the purchase. Please let your viewers know this is an amazing Gibson Guitar after the corrections are made. I Have no connection with Gibson and I am not a professional Luthier, so if i can fix it this guitar is fixable.
    Thank you

      @finishin.my.coffee8780 3 роки тому

      Without making the adjustments you made to the vibrola, would it stay in tune if you just didn't use the vibrola?

    • @conbro0985
      @conbro0985 2 роки тому

      Typical for a vibrola, don’t get me wrong it looks beautiful but I haven’t heard good reviews in the tuning department. That’s why imma just play it safe and get a stop tailpiece.

    "...And your mom's flickin' the lights..." WOW. We used to jam (horribly and horribly loud) in my buddy's basement as teenagers and his mom used to do the same thing. I would leave my Marshall JCM 2000 half stack (which I had no right owning) at his house and his dad would play on it all of the time. I think he may miss that thing more than I do now.

      Eric Burk This one has a thinner neck.

    • @Les537
      @Les537 3 роки тому +1

      61 has skinny head stock, gibson deluxe tuners, different neck join, different route for pickups, hand wiring, smooth back plate (no anti static pattern). Comes in a hard case, the standard comes in soft case now. The '61 also cost more. The pick guard. I'm sure I'm forgetting some things, but it's not a world apart.
      I have the '61 and love it. Also an SG special with p90s. The '61 feels like the neck is a hair thicker than the special, but it could just be the thick finish. Love it.

    I've been thinking about buying a "Gibson SG '61 Standard 2019", but now I don't know if I'm gonna buy the new "Gibson SG '61 Standard" instead.
    As far as I can tell, there isn't much difference between these two guitars, except that one of them has a tektoid nut and the other one has a graphtech nut and I'm not sure how much difference the nut makes.

    • @addicted2tone349
      @addicted2tone349 5 років тому

      I've been wondering this myself?
      I'm guessing this is the official Gibson rebirth? That's the reason for the slight designation change.
      I've looked for a difference and can't find it either..

    • @p4easy7
      @p4easy7 5 років тому +1

      I have the Gibson SG Standard 2019 that was released late 2018 and it has the PCB wiring (which kinda sucks) instead of traditional wiring. Other than that and the nut, I think they are pretty much the same. The truss rod cover on the one I have also reads "SG" instead of the plain black cover. I actually prefer the plain black. Overall, it plays great. I've run through 4 SGs over the years before settling on this one.

    • @Magnanimus
      @Magnanimus 5 років тому

      @@p4easy7 Alright, sounds good! But I wonder if there is a big difference between a tektoid nut and a graphtech nut in terms of how the guitar stays in tune and how much better open strings sounds? I don't even know what kind of nut my Gibson Les Paul Traditional from 2008 has and if it has PCB wiring or traditional wiring. Yeah I forgot to mention the truss rod cover and I prefer the plain black cover also.

    • @conbro0985
      @conbro0985 2 роки тому

      I’m guessing the 61 will come with 60s specs like the profile of the neck etc. Personally me I just think it looks better so it has me sold there😂 but if you’re not a big classic guitar guy like me the normal sg would so as well.

  • @Les537
    @Les537 3 роки тому +1

    I picked up one of these not long ago. It's my 4th gibson over a span of many years. The '61 SG is beautiful. The best fit and finish of any of my gibsons - by far.
    The new style ABR-1 is not like the original ABR-1 and I wish it did attach with screws right in the wood like my older guitars. The saddles also make some dulcimer sounds until you deal with the string groove.
    No real complaints. This guitar is awesome. Plays easy, feels comfortable in the hands, has a good body weight and doesn't want to neck dive all day, sounds bright and dynamic - not compressed or over hot, though the neck PU is a bit dark to deal with. A life time guitar for sure.
