I am 71, and have been learning just shy of five years. I play the first movement at about 1/3 to 1/2 speed, but still enjoy it a lot. This tuturial has been a big help; thanks very much!

Me? 60 years ago I had piano lessons and absolutely as like all kids hated it and hated classical music. 10 years piano and 5 more accordion. Now, I love it. Mostly Mozart but a few others well. Thank you so much for this. I've been playing piano since I was 5, I'm 21 now and I'm not really a consistent player, I stopped for years honestly. I was only taught by my grandma and she didn't go through a teacher also. But I follow through the books (I'm now on grade 3 or 4-ish and I've been playing this (with the guide of the metronome before)) and all the info here is so awesome and it inspires me to practice harder. Now I see the importance of a teacher. Too bad I can't get one right now.

This sonatina is what I've got up on my music rack this very moment! I started trying to learn it just a couple of days ago! Interesting that you comment about the "zig zag" motions. OMG that is killing me in this piece. Playing it slow, it't not a problem, but trying to play at tempo, it's a killer. My fingers just jam up completely. So I've got the metronome going and I'm playing the same 9 notes over and over and over again while attempting to increase the tempo.
it happened to me as well. My teacher made me play it after just 6 months of ever touching a piano. I am struggling immensely with the 1st movement. I have played it like 300 times and not once I got it fully right LOL
I don't know if you have a video on this already, but a video on arpeggios and how best to play them would be great, since I'm playing chopin's waltz in e minor and it starts with arpeggios :D
Hey! My child started piano less than 2 years ago. I helped her get through 'Adult Piano Adv 1' before she started. The teacher insisted that none of 'Adv 2' was challenging enough for her, because she was able to progress through a lesson in a week. She moved her into Grade 3/4 material almost immediately with Bach's "Prelude in C Major". After a month or two, she got it mostly down and the teacher moved her to Chopin's "Waltz in A minor". This took her 2-3 months to learn to speed -- rather void of emotion or dynamics. The teacher moved her to Clementi's "Sonatina in C major, op.36 no. 3". Again after 3-4 months, she has it mostly up to speed, but not polished. This is a RCM Grade 5 piece and my kid only has 2 yrs playing experience max. She cant even play a single scale in multiple octaves, can't identify any 7 or 9 chords, doesnt know major from minor, cant tell you the sharps/flats in any given key, doesnt understand apreggios, etc. I feel like this is a terrible way to teach. Anyone can brute force the right notes after months of repitition, right? I believe the next piece she is about to begin is in the RCM Grade 10 repitoire! Piano is too rewarding because simply pushing the right key at the right time is all that matters for most students, and you can practically train a monkey to do that. It makes me think that I could start with Mov 3 of Moonlight Sonata and get it mostly down within a year, and then just say "I am done. I can play master level piano!' Guitar, violin, and the other stringed instruments mostly force you to slow down because of the difficulty in fretting, plucking, bowing, vibrato, etc. I tried to get her to sight read a piece from Adult Piano Adventures Classics Book 2, and she couldnt. At RCM 5+ and cant even sight read RCM 1 level stuff?! What should I do?

Does spiritoso mean “very fast” as well as bold? No matter how long I practice this piece or how well I play it, I can never play it as fast as I hear everyone else playing it.

Dong Li, me too! Although in my case I took lessons from 6 to 11 years old and I had about 10 lessons in my 40s. No teachers after that, although I have always had a keyboard instrument and would practice a little. But in 2012 I retired, moved and the piano came along. I began to play everyday and I have been working on Clementi Sonatina in C major op, 36 ever since. I have yet to perfect any movement but each day I see a little improvement. I just enjoy sitting down and playing a bit. The joy is in discovering what it can sound like. So at 73 I am at peace learning what I can and forgiving myself for the "sour" notes. Creating the music is an adventure of joy for me.
yo Alyssia! have you ever tried chopins ballade no 1? If not, do you plan to study it some time? I ve read about this reporter who set himself a goal to be able to play this ballade within one year allthough not being a pianist at all and he actually managed it with a lot of discipline and help of professional pianists. this ballade is in fact a piece of work for lifetime, but if I manage it to play it eventually, I would be so happy, even if it takes me 40 years

I have a question. Not related to the video but about piano. I've been learning piano (I have a teacher, self-teaching is something I'm not good with in general lol) for about a couple months. Mind you, I don't have a grade but my teacher said that I was good to go for Grade 2 ABRSM exam. He also said to my mom when she was asking how good I was, he said that I can be a professional pianist in about 10 years. I practice about 1-2 hours on the daily, usually 1 hour after school, then another right before/after dinner. Really passionate about music, I plan to be a producer when I grow up and hopefully I can apply my piano skills to it. Question: Am I going at a fast pace or what? I'm personally comfortable with how I'm learning it now, just that I am curious on how you see it. Am I doing good as a beginner?? Thank you in advance
This is probably a faster pace than average, but you're practicing more than average. I think it's great! I've had students like you in the past who jump ahead quite quickly in grades, it's not unheard of. And 10 years is a really reasonable estimate. Sounds like you're doing great!
Hii My teacher gave just gave me this and I’m only in the beginning of my second year... I have been trying to learn this for 2 days now and it isn’t going as fast as the other pieces she gave me to play. I just keep messing up my finger positions and I’m pressing the wrong keys + I’m holding some keys in for to long When I try to play it really fast, When I play it slow enough everything is played as it should be except for the keys I’m holding in for to long ( staccato ) , but I just can’t get it to the right speed😕 Any advice Hha

No, I think you're probably trying to bite off more than you can chew! I don't usually give this piece to my older students until a year or two has passed.

You're not alone! It looks innocuous on the page, but as soon as you try to play it to speed, the hand tends to seize up. Keep at it!

Why do you play digital piano in tutorial? Does it have any advantage for recording?
Ha ha ha...because it's smaller, I can stick the tripod on it and film top-down. I haven't figured out a good way to do that with my acoustic!
