Lots of people can sing beautifully. What makes Lea special to me is her expressions during the song. I fell in love with her singing when I watched her sing I Dreamed a Dream. I can also understand her words better than most.
I don't think there's a singer on this planet who more clearly enunciates the words to a song. I just love how I can understand every lyric written. What else is the point to write the words but have them be gibberish when sung? Most music like pop/rock/classic rock/prog rock/AC music, I bet 70% of the time I have no idea what they are saying through most of the songs. Makes me crazy that I have to reference lyric printouts, although you also see how tremendously dumb most songs are when you read the lyrics like that.
Bit late in the reply... But I can name two who is on par when it comes to enunciation to the great Lea Salonga.. 1. Liz Callaway 2. Jodi Benson(during her prime years) they do have the same technique in singing.. Listen to Liz Callaway and lea Salonga duet in Carnegie Hall singing I still believe from miss saigon.. And journey to the past (Anastasia) by liz Callaway and lea's version during her concert in Manila.
Another late reply: I noticed when I hear her speak it's the same perfectly executed pronunciation...it's her way of telling a story, and it's in every language she sings in.
Someone said that not even once lea made a mistake in her performance... there were rehearsal in saigon that everybody thought lea was in the wrong key... only to found out later that her key was the only correct.. everybody including the orchestra was made mistake..
Yeah same, some directors really want a perfect cast. Like I've missed out on roles cause I have darker skin. I dont get it though.... Its not a movie, its musical theatre. Casting should be based on talent. The directors should know that, and the audience should know that.
If that was true then Miss Saigon 's role could have been given to a black or white performer. For the perfect cast they may need a singer with a specific race. Her being Asian helped her to get roles and also excluded her other times for the same reason. She knows that better then anyone. It's really disappointing seeing her behaving this way.
+nandorblue If race is really part of the story then they should choose an asian actor for asian roles like miss saigon because it is a story about a vietnamese girl and an amercan GI. but if race was not an issue like Lesmiz then anybody should be offered the role no matter what your nationalities are as long as you have the chops to do the role right. and it takes a brave producer to do that. c'mon don't be hypocrite, it's 2016 but there's still descrimination regarding asians especially in the United States.
+Ann B. She got a role in Le Miserable. The French Revolution is about French people and she as an East Asian she got a role anyway. Whites are bending backward forward to please the race hustlers but it seems she has an ego bigger than the Malacañang Palace..and nothing will be enough for her. Crying racism is very disappointing from someone like her.
you don't really get it... maybe you're not Asian or just hated her. Look at Lesmiz, it actually work.. but there are producers like what she said that won't even allow you to audition because of your race not because you can't do it. So it's unfair. There are a lot of underrated artist just because they're not white.,, and there are white people that's overrated.
Is Blackbird Billy Joel's or The Beatles? I'm not quite sure w/c of the two. Piano Man is Billy's, now there's Blackbird and Bluebird. I know this because an ex was a guitarist, a soulful one .. He plays I listen, he strum, I write, type, print w/ chords his piece (faves).. We once jammed, he played I Axe Ako'y Sa Yo Ika'y Akin, he played, I Sing. He was surprised I know the lyrics by heart.. T'was around 2001-2004..
Billy holliday had an even more limited range but it never prevented her from being great. Same here with Lea. Limited range but Great singer nonetheless.
It's kind of stupid that she got upset at them not wanting to see her because she's asian... when she got her first role BECAUSE she was asian! - sometimes a role cannot be played by anything other than what they need - that's the industry for you.
Asian, usually is never a reason for not being hired. The reason is usually target audience and the cumulative follow and are you a known name, brand/logo and do you have followers. This can turn and go either way because there are many unknowns that have sold more and made more money that known celebrities with followers...aka Fresh Face. It's a money making industry. The market has always been inclusive so the agent perhaps is naive. There are many simple questions...do you attract an audience like honey or corn on the cobb. Is the attraction, sticky, tacky, short lived, slippery, hungry, thirsty etc. Is the audience consuming like a fly, elephant or giraffe. Which?
What is so wrong being ASIAN????? WHY??? ALL I KNOW IS THAT ALL PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD ARE GOING TO DIE EARLY OR LATER.. It's was always always a big deal when your asian ...come on people where also a living Human.. 😔
Teehee... I wonder, can a role of a black man be portrayed by an asian man? Or perhaps an indian role portrayed by an eskimo? Teehee funny how some people wld think of the "R" word right away... *sigh love love love lea though! :)
She really needs to do an acoustic album, so beautiful
world class phenomenon called Lea. Such an articulate character, loved her.
I love the way she sang Blackbird. It's so serene and pitch perfect. Perfection!
oh that voice! God can only give it to someone who will make good use of it...
Greatest love of all & black bird are two of my personal favs. Great job Lea. Thanks.
Never expected to hear Black Bird. Did that song in a choir, it was amazing. But Lea doing it is like... oh god. Heavenly sound drops.
wow!!! lea will always be our hero in the Philippines...Made us so proud!!!Magical voice
No auto tunes just pure talent
or lip syncing
From what angelajaoquin just said. They had to retune the entire orchestra to her voice
she had a good intonation, she sang clearly and obviously you can understand those key that she sang yet. incredible ,awesome singer :)
civiram mhavick Mann.
Well said, there are a lot of good singers but Lea’s best quality is the clarity of her voice, no straining or cracks. Such a pure and perfect voice.
Lots of people can sing beautifully. What makes Lea special to me is her expressions during the song. I fell in love with her singing when I watched her sing I Dreamed a Dream. I can also understand her words better than most.
I empathize with you Lea about being Asian..
angelic voice... very soothing... the lyrics are so clear... lea you are such an inspiration

Bit late in the reply .. but two immediately come to mind: Karen Carpenter and Philip Quast

+Ann B. I think you completely misunderstood what I said lol
Wish you'll come up with another album......missing the LEA SALONGA voice!
My regards to the guitar man.
MABUHAY LEAH!
Good voice love it...
Beautiful rendition of black birds
I've been hoping for a long time that she would record A Quiet Thing eventually -- this is so great!
Sounds so good
Her voice is very very beautiful
Goosebumps always.
Listen to her album By Heart. It has all cover songs but it’s my fave album of hers. Easy listening but still has the emotions. 😊
thank u for posting!
ahhhhh.....so good....
what a very technical singer!
Sure. I'll get to it when I can.
That ending of black birds... how is that possible
listen to her sing "pie jesu" or "panis angelicus"
for deep or lower register listen to her sing fantine's aria from les miz
perfectly elegant she is.....
she's the best.love her!
She has all the lyrics!
I love how she ended "For Good". It always sort of bothered me that it ended so low.
Can't really spell the word cLEAr without LEA just right there on the center of it.
Exquisite.
mash-up of "Blackbird" and "A Quiet Thing"
She always changes the words to For Good.
she sings so well.... she doesn't need to belt it out like the others which is irritating to the ears.
Exactly!
Not casting someone because of their ethnicity is like not casting someone as Elphaba because they’re not green
favorite beatles song
When Filipino singers use "auto tune" its the end of their careers believe me pinoys are perfectionist humans when it comes to music and grammar.
And yet none singer famous celebrities have platinum albums. Sad no?
I love it, Ms. Lea sung a Beatles ♥
You should see Les Miserables
I wanna changed my life too :)
love my idol
She made feel proud to say I'M a FILIPINO.
There are many reasons for you to be proud to be Filipino, it’s a wonderful culture and people. Lea is just something amazing.
Omggggggggg.
3:00 😍❤️
When was this exactly?
I love her so much

does she record this in any album? or is she playing this in any concert? it's beautiful

unidan82
Your'e wrong.
The organisers said they have been to different countries until they found her.
Unidan82 u are right.but look at her now she have nothing to prove to the world her talent speaks by itself.
So she took Elphaba's part in Wicked?
what is the song after the song FOR GOOD?
whats the title of the song after blackbird?
A Quiet Thing

Same nice lightish voice, but her range is so limited.
okay so Lea sings like it's just breathing, inhale exhale..singing looks so easy hahahaha
