It's funny because I tell myself that's what I'll do to avoid the other task, but then I end up doing the task I was trying to avoid because I'd rather that than wash my brushes 😭
I split up my brushes so I have two similar sets of face and eye brushes, so I can switch off washing one set every other week, than having to it all at once. It made the whole task much quicker and less intimidating, and it stopped me from using a dirty brush for too long because it was "my favorite" and I didn't want to be without it while it was getting cleaned. Highly recommend.
So do I. I have one container for face and one for eyes. Tho my foundation brushes or with my eyeshadow brushes for some reason I just realized I don’t know why I guess because they’re smaller and all my fluffy blushes go together
The most infuriating interaction I’ve had in all my years on the Internet was telling a woman who was complaining about eyeshadow palettes expiring after a few years “hey your eyeshadow would probably stop going bad so soon if you washed your brushes more instead of not cleaning them and spraying alcohol on the shadows all the time” and she basically responded “lol no” I can’t stand using brushes that were already used so mine basically get washed every day I wear makeup but it was a weekly thing before I got weird about it
@@EdenNicole24 weekly is fine and much better telling someone you basically refuse to wash them! I just got fussy one day and started washing them all the time
I am so happy to see this comment. I thought I was weird being overly obsessive over cleaning my brushes after every use. I used to do it every week or so when when I had an hour commute and I put on makeup when I got to work, but now that I do it at home I wash them every time. If I don’t have time to clean them right away I put them on the counter and do it at night. It’s really much easier to do it every day than when I would wait. Takes less than 1-2 minutes with a scrub pad and brush cleaner.
Oh boy. I did a brush declutter two months ago and started cleaning my brushes every other week (or a little longer if I have to) as a hygiene goal. SO FAR it is working well. it would be cool to do a self care type video like "clean your brushes with me!" ppl do that for eating meals, cleaning their rooms, so why not cleaning brushes?
I try my best to wash my brushes at the end of the day right before bed. Eye brushes I only use once, my foundation brushes I use once or twice, and other face brushes I use maybe 3or 4 days and then wash. Sometimes I screw up and wait a week, them I kick myself when I have a pile to wash.
I'm an enabler. Maybe just get a pretty storage cup for the sparkly pink set. Then its displayed in a pretty way and makes space in your big spinner for your more "useful" brushes.

Have had my brushes set aside to wash all week so this video was exactly the thing I needed to push me to actually do it! Brushes are now washed and ready to go :)
I have my brushes separated into thirds. A cup of clean brushes I use, a section of dirty brushes on the counter waiting to be washed, and another section on counter cleaned & drying. It works well to cycle through and I usually end up washing 3-4 uses up to a week. I go depending on how they feel. I can tell the brushes aren’t as soft when they are dirty so they go in my dirty pile until I get a handful. I only tackle a handful at a time so it doesn’t take that much time and gets cleaned often
I understand your brush problem. lol Makes sense for a professional makeup artist and UA-camr to have a lot of brushes. I just downsized my collection to 49. Cleaned and gave away at least, if not more, as many. I'm pretty good about cleaning my brushes. Made a brush carousel using a kitchen turntable and Dollar Store plastic glasses. Works wonderfully. Have them sorted by task and arranged in order of makeup application. Current favorite' come from Profusion. The handle has a rose gold ferrule with a contoured matte black handle. Bought a second set so one is always clean. ;-) Other favs include Makeup Geek and Ecotools. I don't like or keep double ended brushes. If I hadn't made my "brush carousal" I'd definitely get one or two of your rotating brush holders. Enjoy your content. Keep it coming.
Recommendation some of those mats could be run thru your dishwasher you should check if your mat is dishwasher safe and easy to clean, if it is safe next time you do dishes throw it in the top shelf
I have so many brushes but always go back to using the same ones. Like that original Colourpop brush with the pink handle! This is definitely inspiring me to clean and declutter!
Hey Lauren, believe it or not the ulta solid brush cleanser works just as well as the beauty blender one and it's like $4!!!! I've cleaned all my brushes 3 times and I still have product left! No greasy film. Brushes feel perfect!
@@bobsalamone9798 thank you guys so much...it hurts spending that much on something that only benefits me and my brushes when I have a family. Yup def cleaning my brushes on the weekend! Hi from Brisbane! Watching the constant stream of water going down the drain is giving me mild anxiety. Everyone please be mindful of your water use. Fresh water is not a renewable resource.
... Yes it is a renewable resource?? It's available at limited quantities that are constantly being used and refilled simultaneously. The availability varies across the globe (in some places in ridiculously small quantities that make it more precious), but it is renewable.
@@fridawarnemyr6025 no sorry. The amount of freshwater on the earth doesn't change. We won't get more than we have now so by definition it is non renewable
@@devonyoung3664 I just read up on it and you're technically right as it's being used up too quickly (primarily by large corporations), but your definition of water being a non-renewable resource isn't quite accurate. Non-renewable resource = A resource with economic value that cannot be replenished after being used, or is replenished too slowly to the point where it risks running out.
I am a brush hoarder as well I have 7 new sets I can't get to because I won't quit using older ones. You have definitely inspired me to get rid of some of the brushes I just use but don't even really like. Great video. Tfs.
I wash my brushes weekly and use the color switch daily--I also wash the color switch weekly and have two that I go between (one that I use while the other is drying after being cleaned). I like Ulta's solid brush soap, it works pretty decent. My favorite brush cleaner is the one from Ecotools--it's gotten super-stained bristles clean and looking new again. I have a "finger mat" (one that slips over my fingers) but I do want to get a mat. Every so often I see them pop up at TJ Maxx.
I honestly fell asleep to this 2 nights in a row.. and not because it was boring! I wanted to watch this video so bad but I've been working early hours so I'm tired!!! I'm so glad I got through it on night three lol, great video! I've been wanting to do something like this. xoxo
This was so therapeutic to watch. I washed all my brushes, and even though I don't have as much as you have, I do have an excessive number of brushes.... I really have a weakness for brushes. You inspired me to declutter a few
Ok came over here to figure out a brush from a diff vid lol. Girl I feel u! I legit just washed n sorted all my brushes into cups and filled a box that could fit a comforter! Insanity! The way I go about decluttering is like you to sort by type and then first grab my absolute faves/must haves and go from there. If I don't truly love it, actually use it or wouldn't replace it if I lost it rn I can likely stand to let it go.
I still use my hand. It’s effective but draining. I would recommend cleaning the matte. Beautiful collection! Love cleaning my brushes so therapeutic. I clean them weekly
Thumbnail pulled me. 🤣 Coincidentally I started washing yesterday, but I have baskets of dirty brushes too, some waiting for me since I moved... in July!! 😳 Thanks for pep talk, I needed that.
I pared down to a dozen makeup brushes and it's so much easier (I'm not suggesting you should do the same, my job is not makeup related!). It's less overwhelming when there's only a few to clean, and it also helps that I don't have multiples - if I want to wear eyeshadow tomorrow I have to make sure I clean off today's colours. I incorporate a quick eyeshadow brush clean into my night skincare routine and leave them beside the sink to dry overnight. I add the base brushes on the weekend for a deep clean.
I got some baby shampoo and a brush cleaning mat from the dollar tree, and that's what I use to regularly wash my brushes. It works fine, probably because I don't let my brushes get that dirty before I wash them. I also have a brush spray from Shop Miss A that I use to clean in between when I don't have time for my brush to fully dry, but at least the rose scented one is so highly fragranced that I would often just rather wash the damn brushes and wait for them to dry usually. I like to wash my brushes in between doing my evening skincare and brushing my teeth before bed. I just make sure to gather any of the brushes that I want to wash as soon as I am done with my makeup for the day and take them over to my bathroom so I don't forget. It is so hard to remember to take care of things if they aren't part of your routine!
I think I've washed my brushes maybe once or twice and the year and a half that I've been super into makeup. Granted I have bought new ones and stopped using other ones but still. Washing my brushes and painting my nails I don't know why they're always things I want to do and plan on doing but when it comes down to it I never do it lol
Any time I clean a brush used for cream/liquid product, I first use eye makeup remover first to dip it in and it breaks down the gunk immediately. Then I go in with the cleanser. Sometimes I use dawn for those brushes instead of the BB solid. Basically treat it like a double cleanse for your face but for your brushes
I have one of those rubber scrubbing pads from the dollar store and it works great. Also, I wait way longer than I should between cleanings so my brushes are super gross so, as a first step, I pour a cup of cinema secrets and dip/swirl my brushes in that before cleaning with soap. It cuts down cleaning time by a ton.
If I use a brush for eyeshadow or any other dry product I usually wash them not that often as I probably should, I just use colorswitch in between the uses. If it’s a sponge or foundation brush - after each use for sure!
I am good about washing my brushes, usually after a couple uses. For foundation and concealer I usually wash after each use because they get nasty quickly. Nice video.
for those on a budget, i really like the results the elf dupe has! i also used to just use a bar of soap to clean my brushes and felt like it worked the same 🤷🏼♀️ so satisfying to see all the foundation and powder come off 😂
So interesting how you use the alamar brushes different than me. The one you use for blush I use for bronzer and love it and the one you used for powder I used for liquid foundation and love it. And I love the tapered brush from alamar for highlight and it's so good
I cleaned mine last week or 2 weeks ago. The only brush I used since was my concealer brush to put on concealer on my acne spots today before going to get my real id at the dmv🤪
I barely wear makeup except for special occasions or days when I feel like being creative with eyeshadow, but I'll usually wash my makeup brushes after I have worn makeup 3-5 times, but it does feel so satisfying after they are clean :) :)
I used to use the beauty cleanser bar. Then I found the 14 oz ZOTE soap for $1.25. You can buy a bar of it in the laundry isle at Walmart or even Home Depot. I usu. cut the 14oz. into 3 bars. It cleans my brushes so well; that even pigment stains come out. I use the silicone mat too.
I have to wash my brushes each time I use them. My skin is ridiculously sensitive (MCAS ftw) and if I don't I get breakouts immediately. So for me this is usually not a big issue to deal with!
I recently got a brush cleaning mat like your Sigma one at TJ max that was under $5, so I recommend people checking there before spending a bunch on the Sigma one
I recently got a cheep brush cleaning mat off of amazon. it is small, has a suction thingy where you can also hold it so its kind like a popsocket, and it was only like 5 bucks! I love it and can't believe it took me so long to get one, takes me waaaay less time to clean my brushes now
Girl I love that you cleaned your brushes ♥️ but could I (in the most respectful and loving way possible) suggest ways to save water instead of running your tap for hrs? I get like 5-8 of them wet, turn OFF the water, suds them up, and then batch rinse them together! I know you are conscientious and love your content and hope you might benefit from this method!
I don't know how I missed this video! I have baskets and back up baskets of dirty brushes. I need to stop being a dirty bish, and wash my brushes!!!!! Grabbing a snack and going on this journey with you.
Okay, Mom. Washing brushes is on my to-do list. Also, I'm intrigued by Ela brushes now. I really don't have all that many brushes. I kept giving my daughter the ones from Boxy Charm and then I dropped my subscription.
Ok, phew!! I thought I was the only one with a brush obsession. I will put them aside and use the clean ones until I’m down to my least favorite brushes then clean them. I don’t know why I’m always looking for brushes. And I agree, the beauty blender cleanser is the only one that works and it’s just the bar, I don’t feel the liquid works as well.
I just bit the bullet and got two Sonia G brush sets! I decluttered my other brushes this weekend and only kept a few. The rest are going to my 12 year old niece who is loving makeup!
My favorite brush cleaner is the unscented Free and Clear Liquid Cleanser! Super gentle and comes in a huge refill bottle. Lol it’s also my go-to cleanser overall.
I like the black beauty blender soap, but in the past I used crazy merman cleanser and it worked great as well. I especially enjoyed the guava fig scent from them (very gentle scent), it cost a little less than Bb soap. For really stubborn brushes (read: foundation ones) I use Dawn and let me tell you.... it works wonders! It takes forever to rinse though Edit: cinema secrets works great, but the smell! Can’t stand it!

I have 2 of those type organizers from Marshall's, one for eye brushes and one for face. It's been helpful you've got the right idea.
I'm actually cleaning my brushes now. It's been almost a year since I last cleaned my brushes.
It really does be like that! 😩
@@PurpleKoco Right!
Yikes
I think I've washed my brushes maybe once or twice and the year and a half that I've been super into makeup. Granted I have bought new ones and stopped using other ones but still. Washing my brushes and painting my nails I don't know why they're always things I want to do and plan on doing but when it comes down to it I never do it lol
It’s been 84 years……
I just washed my brushes on Sunday!
Yessss !! That hand bit. Girl I be hurting !!!
Nice video.
for those on a budget, i really like the results the elf dupe has! i also used to just use a bar of soap to clean my brushes and felt like it worked the same 🤷🏼♀️ so satisfying to see all the foundation and powder come off 😂
As amazing of a tool a good color switch is, I feel it gives us a false sense that the brushes aren’t THAT dirty. Thank you for the reality check! 🤣
So interesting how you use the alamar brushes different than me. The one you use for blush I use for bronzer and love it and the one you used for powder I used for liquid foundation and love it. And I love the tapered brush from alamar for highlight and it's so good
yay Lauren! I just got home from work & I’m so ready to relax & watch your video! xoxo
Brush goals 🥰
I cleaned mine last week or 2 weeks ago. The only brush I used since was my concealer brush to put on concealer on my acne spots today before going to get my real id at the dmv🤪
I use the pink Zoat soap for brush cleaning. It works fantastic and is so cheap.
I turned this on to wind down from my day and right when I got into bed to fall asleep, Lauren gives me the okay 😂😴 Thanks girl! Great video!
Would you mind letting us know where to buy your spatula for depotting? Appreciate it. Oh i love watching your declutters. So addictive!
I love the Sigma mat. I use Dr. Bronner's bar soap. It's amazing.
I barely wear makeup except for special occasions or days when I feel like being creative with eyeshadow, but I'll usually wash my makeup brushes after I have worn makeup 3-5 times, but it does feel so satisfying after they are clean :) :)
Jamie Genevieve brush cleaning video she uses a tea bag strainer and swirls her brushes on there! Great idea!! Love u Lauren xx 😘
Good video! I have had good luck with the Sonia Kashuk brush pad in my sink and original Dawn.
“Gummy little disgusting bottom.” - I cackled💀💀💀 Also this was great! You made 200+ brushes entertaining/interesting💕
I have to wash my brushes each time I use them. My skin is ridiculously sensitive (MCAS ftw) and if I don't I get breakouts immediately. So for me this is usually not a big issue to deal with!
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this video. 💜
When you said Spinarak, I felt the makeup and pokemon worlds collide 😂🥰💖
I recently got a brush cleaning mat like your Sigma one at TJ max that was under $5, so I recommend people checking there before spending a bunch on the Sigma one
Hi, where did you get that spinner? it's beautiful.
I’ve been putting off washing my brushes lately I feel like this was a sign lol thank you 😅
I recently got a cheep brush cleaning mat off of amazon. it is small, has a suction thingy where you can also hold it so its kind like a popsocket, and it was only like 5 bucks! I love it and can't believe it took me so long to get one, takes me waaaay less time to clean my brushes now
I feel called out.. gonna go wash my brushes now!
I absolutely love when my brushes are clean.
I love this! Thank you. Sorting and organizing is my jam!
Okay, Mom. Washing brushes is on my to-do list. Also, I'm intrigued by Ela brushes now. I really don't have all that many brushes. I kept giving my daughter the ones from Boxy Charm and then I dropped my subscription.
I love that snake art!
I was thinking about cleaning my brushes this weekend anyway, and this video has pushed me to commit to doing it.
I have a bronzer brush from icing that I got in the 8th grade and I still love it 🙃
I love the Sigma 3D!!
My favorite brush cleaner is the unscented Free and Clear Liquid Cleanser! Super gentle and comes in a huge refill bottle. Lol it’s also my go-to cleanser overall.
This video made me realize I’ve been using lip brushes for inner corner highlight all these years 😂
I don't care much about brush declutter but this was really fun to watch!
It takes forever to rinse though
Edit: cinema secrets works great, but the smell! Can’t stand it!
