- Seems like the whole Monster Hunter community is feeling nostalgic about Monster Hunter World, so today we're listening to a track that was one of the biggest surprises I've had listening to Monster Hunter music: Rotten Vale Theme . A simple locale theme that became one of my favorite tracks in the game!

Easily my favorite non-monster specific fight theme in the entire game i never get sick of it
My favorite is the Guiding Lands one just because of how epic it is, but Rotten Vale theme is definitely a close second
And like every non monster specific tracks it usually fits one monster in the area more than the others. Deserted Island with Lagiacrus, Ancestral Steppe with Kecha Wacha and Rotten Vale with Odogaron

Shame that there aren’t enough quests that give an excuse to play it 😭 (Like unless you’re grinding for radobaan or Odogaron gear there’s next to nothing that doesn’t already have its own theme like Tigrex or Vaal Hazak)

rotten vale and deserted island themes are really strong man.
I love this theme because it makes the rotten vale feel creepy but not ‘evil’, because the corpses in the vale dissolving in the effluvium is what makes the rest of the new world possible
Crazy they went this hard for a theme that originally only played for 2 monsters (great girros has a different, less aggressive version). This track really fits odogaron and is one of the many things that made him so memorable and one of my favorite monsters in the franchise!

i think thats the problem with many monsters with specific themes we start to forget the map fight themes

I keep switching back and forth between Deserted Island, Ancestal Steppe and Rotten Vale

Really like the combination of dangerous but sad and nostalgic feels in this theme.
It's so good at expressing the feeling that despite all the horrifying scene of death and decay of the Rotten Vale , this place is where the remains of the dead will turn into something that come back to nurture other beings.
This theme floods me with so much nostalgia, I remember I’d purposefully draw out the battle with Odogaron just so I can hear it play longer and fight more cinematically.
As soon as I noticed how good this theme was I trained bow hunting radobaans until I could do it damageless dashing around and it was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had
When Capcom has their yearly MH orchestra concerts, they don't pull from many generic area battle themes. The Forest & Hills and Old Desert themes are the most common, since they were a medley played back when there wasn't much music to pull from in the first place, and they're both the themes of Rathalos and Monoblos (two important monsters to MH) respectively. Outside of that though, if they use any area themes at all, they will usually use whatever locale is the one that happens to be connected to the main hub of a game, those being Deserted Isle (Lagi theme + Moga Village), Misty Peaks (Yukumo Village), Ancestral Steppe (Val Habar), Ancient Forest (Astera), and the Hoarfrost Reach (Seliana.)
There are three exceptions to this pattern though:
Endless Maze, which is a standard battle theme from Frontier that is both a banger _and_ repurposed as an actual theme for Espinas in Sunbreak
The Tundra from 3rd Gen, which is a banger from that generation
and of course, the Rotten Vale. It doesn't hit quite the same when they replace the synth with a piano, but it's still wonderful to hear it played live. The fact that it's one of the only "extra" area themes to ever get the live performance treatment is proof in my mind that Capcom themselves must also think it's a particularly special piece.
I love how the synth notes in the intro descend like the hunter, who start in the highest part of the vale and descend to the deepest area
Love the Rotten Vale theme. You gotta do Val Hazak next, his theme is so damn good
It's hard for me to pinpoint why Vaal Hazak's theme fits him so much. I mean, for a Monster Hunter version of a zombie dragon, I would have expected something much slower, more dreadful, and heavier, kind of like Gogmazios' theme. But instead, his music is actually quite energetic, almost sounding outright happy at some points. Maybe it's focusing more on Vaal Hazak's lore about being an important piece of the Rotten Vale's ecosystem? I don't know. His theme fits him so much, but I don't understand why!
Bro I tried to analyze his and bazelguese's rise theme and I got completely overwhelmed, I couldn't keep up at all it was so much fun
Second this!!!! Val Hazak's theme is just so beautiful, hauntingly energetic, with so much rhythmic and harmonic change throughout the entire piece!
I’m always amazed how val hazak’s roar fits the music. I was disappointed it was not included in the soundtrack

As someone who knows basically no music theory, I really appreciate that when you showed the chords you just noted the general feel of them. I love watching people with musical experience react to/pick apart music I like, and that was the icing on the cake. :D

The intro jingle for the rotten vale blew my mind the first time i heard it, favorite area in world!
the opening part sounds like you are descending down just like in the rotten vale where you descend into this weird world.
the instrument also reminds me of bones which is fitting.
I’m curious what parallels can be drawn between this theme and the Coral Highlands given the relation between the two maps and the contrast between them, one represents life the other death, one is a pinnacle the other a pit… etc

This theme is just soooooo good, it never gets old. I sometimes go to the Rotten Vale just to fight Odogaron and listen to the OST. It feels like it should be Odogaron's theme too.

I'm so glad you finally reviewed this song! It's my favourite monster hunter track of all time. The first time I heard it and properly recognised how hype the song is, was during the intro fight against the Radobaan. I was terrified but also felt so courageous in taking on this huge monster! The power of this theme spurring me on to victory! Monster Hunter World was my first game back in 2020 for me, and it was this song that really drew me into the epic journey that is Monster Hunter! The fact that a 2018 game can be "nostalgic" is wild to me.
What a surprise! The Rotten Vale has been from the beginning my favorite locale theme in World and only barely beaten out by the Tundra and Ancestral Steppe theme for my favorite in the whole series. Was super happy that this theme got a live performance from the Orchestra thank you for reviewing it!

Oh gosh the Rotten Vale Theme is insanely good. I found a Metal cover of it by Falkkone and I still think it's one of the most amazing musical pieces to ever come from a game ❤
I remember reaching this place on my first playthrough of World. It was my first Monster Hunter game too. The very first time you hear this, when you have a standoff with Odogaron. I have been playing Dual Blades back then as my first weapon and everything about that part, from the music to the actual fight just clicked. Especially with Dual Blades, with how fast Odogaron is, and you are evaiding back and forth, basically dancing to this soundtrack. I think this was the moment MHW hooked me for good.
Would you consider doing the dire mirales theme from mh3? I never faced him myself, but when i discovered his music i liked a lot, i never see people talking about him, and it is such a cool monster, i hope he shows up in wilds.

Hey Davi, I'm always hyped when you analyze MH music like this, it's always a pleasure! You made me re-discover the Rotten Veil theme, and made me wonder if we could expect you to analyze the Guiding Lands theme? I found it interesting as it mashes up all the locale themes, and it's quite a game to link up each musical part/instrument to each locale (plus the additions made to the theme, and edits during the "pre-chorus", with the Elder Recess update later in the game history). If you feel like doing it, I'll be very excited to watch and hear your reactions and analyzing of this theme! Keep on doing your great job, I love it!

Awakening from the Shadow Lord fight in FFXI is a very good recommendation, Fighters of the Crystal from the same game is also an amazing piece

All of World's locale music is so good in their own right, then take all the good parts about each one & combine them into the Guiding Lands battle ost. Its impossible not to get lost in the music of MonHun & I wear that fact as a badge of honor

Just to mention I'm playing this week Hades, amazing game (I love the slow progress), and the music is just incredible, like the credits' track (the first credits, I don't know if there are more) is a masterpiece, and is refreshing hear amazing videogame music with singers.

long time viewer. you sparked my interest in the dark souls franchise and bloodborne games just for the OSTs that give me goosebumps and make me tear up. played MH most of my life so its music has always been playing. another great video on a lesser known MH track. keep up the great work, always looking forward to your uploads.

rotten vale and hoarfrost reach are easiet the best biome theme for me
I love this theme so much. Truly one of the highlights of World for me. I even use it as battle music for tabletop games sometimes.
Murmers from the Forbidden Land (this track) i0s my second favorite in all of the Monster Hunter series, right under Proof of a Hero (Main theme from MH/Freedom).

This, Ancestral Steppe, Sandy Plains (Rise ver.) and Desert (MHDos) are some of my favorite map themes in the franchise. Heck, I freacking love basically anything this franchise does in terms of music or sound design in general.
This one is interesting tho. For a place called "Rotten Vale", where there's so much decay and dead bodies laying around, you'd expect a more meanacing tone, classical "The living shouldn't enter the Land of the Dead" or something. Yet it's so lively and warm. As if the music was saying that even in such a toxic and dreadful environment, life still finds its way.

"Murmurs From the Land Forbidden" is, in my opinion, one of the best theme names to come out of Monster Hunter. The titles of each piece are great regardless of the generation, but for me MHW really made the theme names perfect (except I prefer Sound of Roaring Horns over Chime of a Shimmering Bell for Alatreon, lol) but it this fits so perfectly for The Rotten Vale. It feels like you weren't supposed to find this area, and the music almost reflects this by being quite an overwhelming piece. A perfectly threatening yet thrilling piece for a perfectly threatening and eerie place to hunt in.
Right now im lestening to Blasphemous ost, have you thought about doing an analysis? Personal favorite themes i recommend are:

Love this theme, so glad its getting put in the spotlight 💕 Another great area theme is definitely the hoarfrost reach. Fun fact: each locale has two different themes that can play at the start of a quest. There is a day and night version of each area intro theme
This theme is in my top 5 for Worlds OST, it just FEELS Monster Hunter to me. It feels wild. it feels dangerous. It feels PRIMAL to me

The theme is so popular that the Tokyo Philharmonic covered it for one of their Monster Hunter shows.
It’s fantastic and one of my favorites. I even like the mid sized monster theme that plays for Great Girros.
Mentioning that everyone is getting nostalgic over World really makes me wonder again why they didn't continue DLC and updates for World rather than focus on Rise. I would still give anything for new areas and monsters in World, an underground locale, an island locale, underwater fighting, anything... it was such a damn good game
The Rotten Vale is easily my favorite map in the entire series. The atmosphere, the monsters, the music, and Vaal Hazak. Everything about it was so perfect and totally sold me on the series after visiting it. Murmurs from the Land Forbidden.
I've been playing Final Fantasy XIV and it has some really amazing music. I'd humbly suggest the following, as I'd be curious what you think. All of these are off the FFXIV: Stormblood soundtrack.
- "*On High*" These is the day theme for a desert highlands zone, and the first time I heard it, especially once the second half of the song hit, I was actually moved.
- "*The Garlean Territorial Anthem for Gyr Abania and Surrounding States - The Measure of Our Reach*" Yes, that is the title of the song. It's long. It's your standard sort of formal anthem, but it was stuck in my head for days after I heard it. Funny thing about it in lore: the melody and (some of) the lyrics were from a conquered nation. The conquerors kept the melody and rewrote the lyrics. The tune is a leitmotif that recurs throughout the Stormblood expansion.
- "*Beauty's Wicked Wiles*" This was the theme song for one of the more memorable bossfights I've ever encountered in an MMO. Half of the effect was the music itself, and the rest was how well the music vibed with the stage design and boss mechanics and a bunch of other stuff, this comment is long enough. I do wish the vocals were less muddled considering how good they are, but whatever.
Even if you don't analyze them, I'd still strongly suggest you give them a listen. They're all great.

I looove the Rotten Vale, its such a good Track. First its a bit playfull, like Wather drops, then it keeps getting faster and unloads as heroic Fighting theme, kinda subverting the entire Areas Design Philosophy.

I always thought this sounded very much like a Castlevania track with that ostinato at the beginning and a few of those chord progressions in the middle. It's really funky and definitely fits the horror aesthetic the locale has over the rest of the maps.
This is my third favorite track from any of the MH games I've played, but I'm thoroughly of the opinion that it is the best Monster Hunter battle theme period (even if I prefer Astalos and Valstrax slightly more).

This theme always made me return to this map, apart from the fact that it is my favorite, the leimotifs it has, the background orchestra, everything is perfect about this theme

No. I think it has to do with the fact that this is the first time in a while listening to this theme in peace and solitute without an Odogaron knocking me around
Am I the only one whose brain adds in an Odogaron roar into the opening beats of this track?
I've done so many Odo hunts, I just hear him roar right when he gets mad at you in the opening of the track. Took me so long to realise that it wasn't actually a part of the theme, and it was my brain doing it.

Even Cateen created one classical piano composition out of it. Speaks how most are sleeping on this track.

I farmed like 30 odogarons to het his gem, and then killed him a lot more to try a no hit challenge against him. I'm still not tired of hearing this
The theme itself just fits the overall environment in the rotten vale! It just feels like you are in an environment of dangerous, weird, and highly aggressive beasts in a hostile ecosystem! I hope we will be able to revisit these maps in wilds!
I'd love you to take a look at the Fatalis fight theme from the Iceborne xpac too!

If you've never heard venus and braves's soundtrack you should give it a listen.
The Falkonne metal remix of this theme is also amazing. Highly recommended.
